Don't get me wrong, I love appreciating threads - I just wanted to be clear that "I like" and "I appreciate" threads are the same.

Well that depends, RJ. I'd consider it a unidirectional equality and not a bidirectional one. That is, if I appreciate someone, it's implied that I like them, but if I like someone, I might not appreciate them.
They're similar, no question. But I think appreciation threads usually exist to recognize some deed or contribution, however trivial or intangible that may be, whereas the "like" threads are really just insipid and generally insincere flattery.
The dictionary definitions do reference each other in spots, yes, but there are many synonyms in the English language that don't mean the same thing idiomatically (this is what often makes foreigners stand out). You get a feel for those subtle differences by reading the other definitions; in particular, part of appreciation is gratefulness (found in both appreciate and appreciation), but you won't see that word in any definition of like.
