The Beginning of the Internet

An awesome TV documentary from 1993 (Peter Mansbridge ftw) talking about a new phenomenon - the "so called internet".

Think it'll catch on?

that was a cool little segment

Ps. A poll should be added to this thread to see when everyone started to use the interent.

September, 1996. Beginning of grade 9. My parents thought it would be good for the family and especially me to have a computer and the internet. It certainly helped, but it didn't take me long to find all those naughty websites and kinky chat rooms.

Bullshit. Al Gore invented the Internet.

Posted by exstasie on Feb-25-2007 22:16:

hmmm...i think I would have to of first used it when I was like 10 or 11? so back in 1995...?

I can't even remember what I would have even done on the Internet back then...

I remember I got it back in about grade 3... prolly about 1995 or so. I used to play the original Diablo online... it was so ghetto... the family used to get so pissed at me when they'd miss calls cuz I was using the phone line for my 14400 modem.

In high school, we had the fastest modem available, connecting to university boards with an accoustic 300 baud modem. I unhooked a rotary phone receiver, and placed it in a large box with two suction cup-like holes where you set the phone down. We connected to a CP/M system.

When I moved out, I had a 2400 baud modem I used to connect to various BBSs to play online games like The Pit and Trade Wars. The Movie War Games inspired me. I ended up working for Future Shop in the early 90s, and was able to buy a 9600 blazing fast US Robotics modem. The same company who invented the Palm Pilot years later, putting an end to my need of my Apple Newton pocket PC. That thing sucked alkaline batteries in just over an hour. Prodigy and AOL then got started, and had a dealer demo account for free with Prodigy. This was my first connection to the internet, and at that time upgraded to 14400 baud. My first email address was [email protected], and it is still found using email address search engines when looking up my name.

I was big into Amiga BBSing when I got my first email address. I'd download my local message board, FidoNet, and Internet email in QWK format to read and reply to in BlueWave.

Email/USENET was [email][email protected] (etched into a floppy disk case somewhere)
FidoNet was delekhan@1:221/302

Then, a dialup shell, to trumpet winsock, to Rogers ~Wave~...
