mix it your damn self...
ok, so for starters... i haven't heard of this done anywhere else. so for all intents and purposes, this is my idea. dont steal it, please.
anyway. ive been bouncing this idea around for a while, and i figure its about time i share.
so.. for a new twist to a trance addict mixing competition kinda thing, how about this:
djs vote, or somehow come up with and agree upon a stock tracklist. then, every dj would have to mix using the same tracks as anyone else. if anything, it'd probably be a longer set to allow for more creativity, and varied in terms of styles....
i'd be curious to see how creative people can be, in terms of track order, and mixing, when they know that everyone else has the same tools that they do.
and of course, we'd call this something along the lines of "mix it your damn self"
any thoughts?
edit: thanks punjabi
thats actually a kinda cool idea but id rather do something like 5 tracks or so as opposed to something longer. hell id be down if anyone wants to organize it.
Yeah I'd definitely be down for this.
well... although theres pretty much limitless places to mix a track in, in terms of just order alone, if theres 5 tracks, theres 120 possible track orders.
6 and theres 720
7 and we get 5040....
and so on...
so by adding a few more songs, theres a lot more room for creativity, and maybe room for a blend of styles...
Sounds refreshing. 5-10 Tracks, count me in.. All we need is people to start discussing and some mod's opinions(?)
cool concept, but I can already see one major problem--how many mixes are you going to listen to when the tracks are the same? If 50 people enter, and they're an hour each, a reasonable request would still call for listening to 2-3 mixes every day for 3 weeks or so, without hearing even one mix with different tracks.
It'd certainly be interesting for a while, but how likely are you to listen to that 50th mix if it's by someone you have no familiarity with, after you've just listened to 49 others, good and bad?
At the very least, you'd need to keep them short--maybe a half hour cap or something--because otherwise, there'll just be a ton of people making them, but nobody listening.
30 minutes. And a selection of 10 tracks to choose from..?
Mix them all if you can?
hmm.. this is true...
although they'd all be the same tracks, i think with enough variation, it wouldnt really matter.
imo, this would really be a dj comp for djs. if they're all good tracks, hopefully nobody will mind hearing them a lot, and then people could look at mixes like "oh, i would never have thought to put this track after that track... it transitions so well" or.. "you mixed this song in at this point.. huh.. different. i (dont) like the way you did that..."
hopefully, it forces djs to think outside the box a little, because the mixes can be scrutinized an extra degree... know what i mean?
Sure. And depending on the dj's equipment the variety would be immense. And there are so many talented dj's around here that could do mad FX and use tools that i don't we would get bored, if the set was 30 mins or so..
with the choice of 10 tracks and a maximum length of 30mins, i cant see y the judges would get bored at all... i'd probly struggle to squeeze 6 tracks in... that would leave at least 4 tracks u may find used in another persons' set - it's a great idea imo
I'm not saying it wouldn't be interesting. I'd definitely like to hear all of them, but I've just got to imagine that it would start to get old after a while, and that people would all jump in right away & make mixes, and listen to a few, but that it'd just be tough after a while, since, even though the possibilities are limitless:
-There will be a lot of similarity, because there will be combinations of tracks that work, and those that don't
-There's no element of "oh, what's that track?!?!"
-There will be a lot of them that aren't good
I'm just trying to figure out everything that could go wrong ahead of time, because I like the idea and I don't want to see it get started, then dry up in a month or two.
The idea as its charms, but I think there needs to be some limits to address some of the concerns above.
I think maybe have a list of 8 or so tracks, but a limit of 30 mins and people don't have to use all the tracks (ie they can use 8, 7, 6, 5 or just loop 1 if they were that way inclined). That way theres some scope for differences between mixes because some people will use diff combinations of tracks.
Also there may need to be a limit of entries each round, maybe 10, to make it more attractive for people to download and listen to the mixes. But because there is a limit, people should be limited to how often they can enter (maybe not twice in a row unless theres a shortfall of entries) to assist widespread participation.
my 2c at least.
the main question i have is, how long would this comp be running, would it automatically end after so many entries from the candidates were sent in? ie: 20 mixes, with 2 mixes per person max and they have to choose their best to be judged or is it just going to be a free for all and see wot happens?
well... first, wed have to take time to decide a certain tracklist, or useable tracks. then, there has to be an allotted time to acquire these tracks (especially for vinyl junkies like myself)...then a time period to make the mix...
my guess is that it'd be free for all, and we'd see how many people would be interested. so long as people are interested in the idea, we can tweak it and have a v2.0 or something if the first run doesnt go exactly as desired.
but id say one entry per person. or per round or however we'd set this up.
another idea... multiple rounds, with different tracks per round.. (on second thought, idk. vinyl = pricey.)
but we'll see...
Hey I'm still pretty noob to mixing (got the gear in December) but this would def allow me to get some constuctive criticism and pointers, so I'd def be up for it!
ii see where u're coming from as far as cost for vinyl users... only "way round" that would be to use popular tracks that most are likely to have, tho that would probably not be the best suggestion... just cant think of another way lol
yeh i would be down for this. Only suggestion i could think of would be say pick 30 tracks that could be used and then tell ppl to make a half hour mix.
So then they could use some of the tracks or do live mash ups withthe tracks and there would be a lot more variety in the mixs.
btw what genre would it be?
this could become really big, cos now u mention it... what genre? not everyones going to want to do breaks, not everyone going to want to do trance, or electro, cos everyone has their own way... It will prob have to be split up into several categories, and as said above, pick 20-30 tracks from each genre and tell who ever is entering to throw down 30 mins of pure gold and send it in!
Yeah. Gotta have variety of genre. I personally prefer techno if the purpose is to show off your mad mixing skillz instead of tracklist.
Also, pick tunes that aren't popular, but good. So people find some new tunes and not the same stuff they've heard before.
This is one of those things im gonna have to wait until mid april for when my exams are out the way, so i can really practice in my dojo n shit...
Cracking idea. Well up for it.
And if the vinyl users can't afford it, well that shouldn't hold us CD users back.

This sounsd like a nice idea, we should start naming some tunes and setting different categories.
count me in as well. I'm a newbie, but I can beatmatch well 90% of the time
cool, lets get the idea across to more and more people then get everyone to put their name on a roster or something for each category.
