BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a Virginia Tech dorm and then, two hours later, in a classroom across campus Monday, killing at least 30 people in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history, government officials told The Associated Press. The gunman was killed, bringing the death toll to 31.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said Virginia Tech president Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."

It was not immediately clear whether the gunman was shot by police or took his own life. His name was not released, investigators offered no motive for the attack. It was not known if the gunman was a student.

The shootings spread panic and confusion on campus, with witnesses reporting students jumping out the windows of a classroom building to escape the gunfire. SWAT team members with helmets, flak jackets and assault rifles swarmed over the campus. Students and faculty members carried out some of the wounded themselves, without waiting for ambulances to arrive.

The massacre took place at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a coed dormitory that houses 895 people, and continuing at least two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building about a half-mile away, authorities said.

Police said they were still investigating the shooting at the dorm when they got word of gunfire at the classroom building.

After the first shots were fired, students were warned to stay indoors and away from the windows. But some students said they thought the precautions had been lifted by the time the second burst of gunfire was heard, and some bitterly questioned why the gunman was able to strike a second time, two hours after the bloodshed began.

"What happened today this was ridiculous. And I don't know what happened or what was going through this guy's mind," student Jason Piatt told CNN. "But I'm pretty outraged and I'll say on the record I'm pretty outraged that someone died in a shooting in a dorm at 7 o'clock in the morning and the first e-mail about it no mention of locking down campus, no mention of canceling classes they just mention that they're investigating a shooting two hours later at 9:22."

He added: "That's pretty ridiculous and meanwhile, while they're sending out that e-mail, 22 more people got killed."

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko in Washington said there was no evidence to suggest it was a terrorist attack, "but all avenues will be explored."

Up until Monday, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was in Killeen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard drove his pickup into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself.

so shitty. It's mind boggling to think what could possibly bring someone to do this. I say armed security at every school from here on out, with judge, jury, executioner status.. this can't keep happening

Yea my dad called me, begging me to go home right after he heard this and saw the actual video on yahoo.com taken inside the shooting. I can understand where he's coming from though cuz this kinda shit can happen anywhere. I'm done with classes anyways so I'll hop on here as soon as I get home.

horrible, horrible news I think the thing that really hits home is that it was so indiscriminant in nature.

Better idea: how about concealed carry licenses for students?

True...and I dig it. But what about those students who are still in that state of mind of trying new things, or seeing if "this would really kill someone if I shot it through a wall"?

p.s. Nath PM me your mailing address. I'm done with "The Shattering of the Union" book...the one I told you my history professor wrote. I'll have him autograph it out to you with a little message and I'll send it off to ya!

It breaks my heart, but this is yet another reason why every adult should be armed.

I think this just reaffirmed my decision to go get a CHL....

Its not enough, but my sincere prayers and condolensces go to the families and friends of all those who were killed and wounded. Unfortunately some things in life we'll just never understand. It really angers me to no end that when certain individuals have a 'downfall' in life that they take undeserving people down with them.

+1 That's why I have my CHL. Not a student, but I wouldn't put it past a disgruntled employee pulling the same kinda shit after getting fired.

Posted by progressiveMOJO on Apr-17-2007 03:34:

I don't plan to get a CHL. Having a gun is the temptation to use it. And there are very, very few situations in which I'd actually want to use one.

also, I don't mean anything against having rifles for hunting or target shooting, or a pistol for target shooting. But a CHL has one purpose: giving you the capability to kill people more easily. Nothing else.

I disagree.

I own a M1911 .45 for self-defense; mainly because of the part of town I currently live in. I *hope* I there never comes a situation where I would have to rely on it, but if there was, I would not be defenseless.

I have been in plenty of traffic situations where I am sure a lesser minded person would have had the impulse to shoot another driver. Anyone who drives in Houston probably has to. However, we all have a choice. I am aware of all the legal implications I would get myself into by taking such action with a firearm and perhaps this knowledge lends self-control. My point being, I have never been tempted to illegaly discharge my weapon; but should I NEED it, it's always there.

Posted by progressiveMOJO on Apr-17-2007 04:11:

I don't consider myself defenseless even without a gun or weapon. I also consider myself to be level-headed, and against violence in general if it can be avoided, and having a lot to lose, and well aware of the consequences. Sure I've been lividly pissed off at a variety of people for a variety of reasons, including traffic and idiots almost getting me killed by doing stupid things with their cars, and to date I've never felt an actual desire to actually shoot them.

But, well, shitty things happen. I'd rather not be mugged and all of a sudden the person who only had a knife in my back now has a knife and a gun. Something unforseeable could alter my mental state, which is a possibility for anyone regardless of how confident they are in their own sanity and levelheadedness. Most people who are shot during robberies are shot by their own guns because the robber didn't have one of his own but took theirs. For the forseeable need that I have for deadly force, there is too much that can go wrong for me to justify the trouble and responsibility of owning a handgun.

if I lived somewhere terrible it might be different, I just see more trouble than need.

I'd like to drive to school in an M1, and just start taking out cars.

CHL's require background checks and training. CHL's give law abiding citizens the chance to protect themselves against anyone who threatens our lives.

It's highly unlikely that the guy with a knife or gun at your back has a CHL.

Read the Parable of the Sheep.

Get your CHL.

I really hope the gun control fanatics don't try to use this event to start restricting gun laws again. They did the same after George Hennard plowed his pickup truck into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot 23 people.

Having a weapon to defend yourself is a constitutional right and should be exercised by those responsible enough to respect the right. IMO, if more people had things such as CHL's then it would be a deterent to would be assailants. I only say this as a former law enforcement officer.

'The people that have the ability to defend others against tyranny and the threat of evil have the responsibility to defend' - John Adams

Posted by Zild on Apr-17-2007 16:37:

I just don't see people with a CHL using their weapon for anything other than defense. Why do then when you can get a stolen gun for $75 and destroy it immediately after you commit your crime.

I love that quote Steve. Here is a similar one.

"Those who have the power to protect, should protect those who cannot protect themselves."
