Visiting London - 5/4 to 5/7

Hello fellow TAs...

I'm heading to London for 4 days/3 nights, May 4th - 7th and was hoping someone can help me find some underground trance parties (not house, but trance). I realize that London's house scene is HUGE, so it's been difficult for me to find a trance DJ or a trance event over that weekend. I've checked numerous websites and still haven't found anything good.

Does anyone know of any good events over that weekend, or any trance event listing website?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

~Vicky~

Couple of decent trance line-ups on the Sunday:

Gallery pres. Fire it Up @ Koko (awesome club)

Eddie Halliwell
Gusippieppeeie Ottiavinni
Adam Sheridan
Greg Downey
Fred Baker
Marcel Woods

and....

Serious @ the Cross

Matt Hardwick
John O'Callahan
Simon Patterson
Chris Barratt
Si Tizzard

Wouldn't mind doing the Gallery

Thanks, guys!

Is Matt Hardwick more house than trance though? At least that's what I thought.

I saw Eddie Halliwell in the US once, and wasn't sure if he was truly a trance guy. I know he does a lot of crazy mixing stuff, which is pretty impressive.

Just out of curiousity, are there any trance events on the Friday or Saturday night? Seems like everything is on a Sunday so far...

Eddie is Trance, but has the mixing skills as well, his set is sure to be full of energy.

Turnmills would normally be the night to go for on the friday as its the gallery but it seems to be more house and techno for the lineup for some reason.

It's a monster weekend for parties, you could check out nearly any of the clubs in london to have a good time, Pacha is good or the egg if you want some slower stuff.

Check out this calendar for all the parties (bigger clubs at the top) http://www.dontstayin.com/uk/london/2007/may#UcEventList

As Zag said, what do you refer to as trance. To be honest the melodic stuff like Above and Beyond isn't that big at the moment.

Posted by vixydish on Apr-19-2007 00:40:

Right, when I say trance, I refer to Above & Beyond, Ferry Corsten, Armin Van Buuren... all the fluffy, melodic stuff. I've gone to clubs w/ house music but I just get so bored by it that I fall asleep. I wish I like it though because it looks like all clubs pretty much spin some kind of house music in London.

Has anyone heard of Vinyl Destination? I wasn't sure if that's a trance event. But if not, I guess I'll have to check out the Sunday events 'cuz they're closest to what I'm looking for.

Ferry Corsten is much more house than fluffy trance now.

Vaguely heard of Vinyl Destination but think it may be a hardcore night (tho I may be thinking of Slammin' Vinyl).

Just seen DSI - Nice getting in for free skills at Serious Vixydish You will enjoy it - it's a great venue and the crowd's always really friendly and up for it I bought my ticket weeks ago.

theres a local night called compulsive at Club 414 in Brixton on Sat 5th, check out This website for more info. No big names, but a friendly atmosphere, and a wicked crowd

Posted by vixydish on Apr-19-2007 18:43:

As this will be my first time in London, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if Kings Cross, Camden Town or Brixton is safe at night? I heard Kings Cross is not, but I just wanted to get people's input. What should I do to make sure that I'm safe since I'll be out so late?

come to compulsive....if you want underground, it doesn't get more underground than 414.

as for safety...plenty of dodgy places in london, but just go from point A to B as quickly and purposedfully as you can, and you'll be fine. same as any big urban city to be honest...stay on big streets, travel in a crowd, etc etc.

but yea, brixton is not exactly the safest place at night i guess.

edit: noticed you are from west LA...i'm from cali as well.

Good to meet some Calis!

It's pretty much just my boyfriend and I going to London so I hope nothing will happen to us. I heard that the Tube is closed in the middle of the night, so we may have to take "tabs" back. Is that true? Are there any other public transportation that we can take, at, say, 3 in the morning?

I wouldn't say Kings Cross was that dangerous at night certainly not in the area where the club is - there is a taxi rank a few hundred metres from the club anyway that will take you to your hotel - what's all this going home at 3am business though - club's open till 7am
They run buses in london throughout the night but I wouldn't recommend getting on one really - a taxi's definitely the safest form or transport but only get one from a rank.

Posted by vixydish on Apr-19-2007 22:34:

Thanks for the info, Guinness Joe. Is there any way to know where a "rank" is? I'm most likely going to Koko for "Fire It Up" w/ Eddie Halliwell.

Posted by slinkyhead on Apr-19-2007 22:36:

Camden, Brixton, Kings Cross.....depends on your definition of safe. Stay in the main areas with others you'd be fine. I did get beaten up near Kings Cross a couple of years ago but think it's got better recently.

Night bus would be fine tho, had some of my funniest moments on there.

I used to live round Kings Cross so know it fairly well, if you need any help just PM. You should have gone for Koko though much better venue

get a minicab from the venue, when you leave they will offer you a cab, ask you were you want to go and give a price. They are all licensed so can be trusted

I'm planning to be at Koko but may head to Slinky's 10th birthday in Bournemouth, we shall see.....

When I was at Turnmills at Easter I had a 20 minutes walk back to my hostel near King's Cross at around 4am because I didn't want to pay the bus nor the taxi...

Posted by vixydish on Apr-19-2007 23:47:

slinkyhead - so when I leave Koko, I should ask for a minicab, even if this is late night?

Be careful though. Don't accept a lift from anyone who OFFERS you a 'cab'.

Make sure they've got licencse badges inside and stuff...

Koko run a taxi service, within the foyer of the club there will be staff with clipboards etc. who will be arranging it.

Do not leave the club and then get a cab from any random blokes offering lifts from outside.

Where are you staying in London?

Posted by vixydish on Apr-20-2007 15:14:

I'll be at the Park Plaza Riverbank. That's great to hear that Koko runs a taxi service. This kind of gives me a little peace of mind.
