REAL Ambient vs. Trance Chillout

Seriously, I am tired of mother******s saying shit like "Oh, ambient? You mean DJ Tiesto- Traffic (Ferry Corsten & Solarstone's Chillout Mix), right?" NO!!!!!!!!!!!! AMBIENT Ambient. I'm talking Rich, Roach, Reich, and Eno. Which do you like better, Trance Chillout or Ambient, and what are your favorite tunes?

Posted by SMC on Apr-23-2007 16:13:

I agree, ambient is a misused word.

Some of my favorites are Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, Vir Unis, Craig Padilla, Robert Rich, Pete Namlook and artists on labels like Spotted Peccary and Ultimae Records.

Some of my favorite releases:

Harold Budd & Brian Eno - The Pearl
Jon Jenkins - Beyond City Light
Solar Fields - Extended
Vidna Obmana - The River Of Appearance
Steve Roach - New Life Dreaming
Robert Rich - Calling Down The Sky
Vir Unis - Aeonian Glow

Everyone focuses so much on genres now that they all lose credibility and after time there really is no more tracks that fit under a certain genre.

My list is-

Pete Namloon- Etheral Being

Steve Roach & Loren Norell- Eceiposis
Milieu- Windy Hills
Aphex Twin- Rhubarb

unlike in most genres, i do have a favorite ambient track:
Blaine L. Reininger, Dr. Atmo, I.N.G.O. & Michael Pagenstedt - Soundtrack Of My Dreams (Fax)

Well I don't have favourite ambient tunes, because that genre is pretty album-oriented so here are my favourite ambient albums:
Dominic Woosey - Straylight
Dreamfish - Dreamfish
Eno - Music For Airports
Neutron 9000 - Lady Burning Sky
Atom Heart - Orange

Brian Eno and Moby generally do it for me. Montana's dub mixes are fantastic though.

Moby's "Hotel - Ambient" is what I put on when in an Ambient mood. I also like a lot of the Brian Eno stuff.

idoru: 76:14...What a classic

some tracks sound like ambient, chill out trance whatever to me but you right is a trance album not ambient, same for Chronoscale.

"The K&D Sessions"

but to tell you the truth, i do like some of the mellow "so called trance ambient" stuff, like solar stone. i like their 2 disc Euphoria mix cd a couple of years back.

also following along the same lines of ambient and chillout, i am a big fan of acid jazz.

lol @ genre whores needing to classify everything.

do you have ambient or chilled underwear today?

Posted by Spirit5 on Apr-24-2007 03:47:

I like both, it doesn't matter. But I prefer more melodic ambient stuff to soundscapes. I would use soundscapes like what Robert Rich or Steve Roach make as meditation type music, but on a daily basis, I prefer stuff that is ethereal-ambient melodic music like Ulrich Schnauss, Amethystium, Enigma, Blue Stone, Delerium etc.

Yeah, and all fuckin idiots using different words for different things. Why don't we just call every type of food "banana", that would make communiacation a lot easier.

I agree with the the OP, chilled trance is NOT true ambient. I still enjoy some of it though. These are the genres I consider to be under the ambient guise and ones that I typically listen to - dark ambient, down-tempo, psy-chill, drone(minimal), idm, glitch, euphoric(chilled-trance), trip-hop. That being said, ive been listening to a lot of Roach lately. Namely, Dreamtime Return, New Life Dreaming, and Mystic Chords and Sacred Spaces, especially right before I hit the sack. Ive got way too many good artists on my HD though. I can never decide what to listen to when im in the mood.

Skysurfer is amazing

But also are Airstream, Reno, Cell and others like that.

Ambient Trance - is this chilled out mixes of trance tracks? I'd say Chicane was Ambient Trance?? What are the exact definitions?

I often plug it, but Ministry of Sound's Chillout seession 2003 is spectacular, as is Ibiza Chill Session 2006
