searchin' for that special sound...

Hi there,

I got a BIG problem. I'm in search of that cool synth sound which is used in a lot of trance tracks. the newest one, and probably one of the best is rank 1 - awakening.
i cut some samples of different tracks so you can imagine the sound i'm searching. It's a some kind of synthstring/hard lead.
I used the 3Osc in FruityLoops to 'emulate' this sound but I can't figure out how to copy it exactly. It always sound to dirty, you can hear the saw-waveform.
Does anybody got some presets for softsynths or can you tell me what softsynth is good for that type of sound. Or you got a sample of it?

Who can help me? Big thanx...

well.. the key 2 it is that u must use the fx channels

put the 3xosc on for instance fx channel 2 and put reverb, delay, eq and flanger on that channel.. tweek some knobs at them.. and then begin tweaking the 3xosc..

it worx for me so.. give it a try m8

oh jeh.. i like that 1st track.. howz it called??

I used some fx on that synth, of course. but still it sounds to hard and dirty. it's that typical saw-sound. perhaps i should use a lowpass and change the cut/res.

do you have some presets for the 3osc or any other synth you could send me by mail?

sample1 is taken from paul van dyk's mayday 2001 set. but i don't know the name of the track.

And uhh.. Can you send some presets also to me?
My email = [email protected]

Thnx m8!

If it's not too much trouble, could you send those presets/FLPs to me too? I need some more synths, and I'm too inexperienced to make my own yet (Had FLP for 2 months).

No problem m8.. But I forgot that it's a remix. So the name is:

David Forbes - Questions Must Be Asked [Magika Mix]
that should work!

Thnx for sending the presets!

This is exactly what I wanted to know too!
But what sample do I need to use with Fruity?? I have lots of one-shot synths, but no one comes close to a phat trance sound

Help me please

There's more to that sound than sawtooths (or is it sawteeth?); try getting your hands on a JunoX2 plugin. Or layer more than one 3osc, filter each differently and add effects to taste. Bandpass might help to give it that horn-ish "blatt" sound.

ANYBODY - What's the name of the second track? Sounds amazing!
Thanx in advance.

Posted by cyrus2k2 on Apr-29-2002 06:39:

it's a short sample of 'rank 1 - awakening'

Posted by Taz on Apr-29-2002 22:37:

Thanks!

BTW here's my own little approximation of the sound and some of the techniques described, if you want to check it out:

http://members.tripod.com/~music66/davesong.flp

Just right-click on it and change the extension from .htm to .flp.

I don't really know the song, so the downbeat's probably in the wrong place. But you'll get the picture. It's all done with 3osc's and stock effects. Let me know if it loads properly!

Wow, this synth-preset is great! Good work dude!
I played around with that fruity-file of you, tweaked some fx, the melody and some other stuff. Now here is my version:
http://rsr.host.sk/preview/pvd.zip

It's really funny. Almost exactly one year ago, paul van dyk played this song in his set at 'Mayday 10in01'. And today i see how easy it is to get his sound with that cool piece of software called FruityLoops.
Lets see what he is doing tonight. I guess he will drive the crowd crazy...
Anybody there tonight? for me, i got some other things to do. but i'll record the radio-broadcast. it's about 10 hours, i think.

Don't forget: It's MAYDAY!!!

Taz, really nice sound!!! Wow

The pvd.zip doesn't open on my end unfortunately.

Well Fruityloops is just another one of those programs with lots of options and flexibility. Once you have that, it's all skills.

Let's have a closer look at the lead sound:
3osc - Two detuned sawtooths, and one sawtooth an octave up to brighten things. SD stands for Stereo Detune, gives it a stereo fatness. SP is Stereo Phase Offset - makes it stereo without really detuning.

Look at the volume envelope (that's VOL in the INS section) I've adjusted the decay, sustain level and release times so the sound doesn't just cut off but has a bit of what sounds like reverb.

The filter is BP - a bandpass to give it a bark. Note the cutoff envelope settings (CUT in the INS screen). Hold is all the way down so it's just decay doing all the work to give it a slight "bowww" kind of effect. Gives it punch.

Then the effects: Delay to give it rhythm and bounce. Flanger - there's too much going on to describe, except that it gives more motion and thickens the sound further. If you bring up the delay knob (1st one) it becomes less of a jet flanger and more like a chorus/detune effect.

And of course the key to it all: that big reverb. It's a technique borrowed from 70's and 80's arena rock, when they wanted to get that stadium sound on the records. Think Van Halen or any metal album from the late 80's.

Ah yes and the notes: It's just parallel harmony in sixths with roots in the bass, a technique known as open voicing, so you can use a fat sound without clutter.

Stay in school, peeps!
(Mind you, some of you might know all this stuff already.)

BTW, which mix of Awakening is in the sample, is it the original?

Posted by Joi Lamusic on Apr-30-2002 20:42:

Yeah, I can't open the pvd.zip either

Taz, U are giving quite nice tutorial over here!! Thanks alot! And keep on teaching

(I still have sooooo much to learn)

Posted by cyrus2k2 on May-01-2002 12:11:

hmmm, i dunno exactly which version it is. i think it's the extended mix. it's about 6:02.

Posted by Taz on May-02-2002 13:12:

Yep, that's the one. Thanks!

Disappointing intro, though. See related thread:

Hmm, i don't know why that download of my flp doesn't work. anyway, i made some more versions out of that track and now it seems to become a nice little remix. here's my newest try on that tune. give it a try: http://rsr.host.sk/preview/hymn.mp3
