Posted by Sunsnail on May-02-2007 03:56:

It's the code to crack em. Now i can make copies.

the key to break security (to copy/back-up) HD-DVDs was found back in febuary by a hacker in doom9 forums.
Now, it's become an initiative (fad) to spread the key around
and now the hd-dvd consortium is sending out Cease&Desists all over the universe, so now its become the new movement to "encrypt" the number in various ways (md5 hashes, binary, hex, etc)

edit: so all the "free thinkers" on these web2.0 forums (who hate DRM and all these anti-copy technologies) are "fighting back" for consumers everywhere.

How can you keep code like that from thousands of nerds trying to figure this shit out...

I'm stupid when it comes to certain aspects of technology, so bare with me here.

So this kid , who obviously had nothing better to do with his time cracked a code to burn dvd's that he was to cheap to buy?

Posted by DjDeComp on May-02-2007 04:05:

this does not compute

it's actually a fight for consumers who wish to do whatever they want with the media they buy.

It can be either for legal purposes (making back-ups of original source in the event of wear+tear, or putting it on a hard disk connected to a network, enabling you to watch your movie anywhere with the internet), or of course illegally by copying and sharing on the internet, for (or not) profit. Either way, it pisses off the angel consumer

this also goes for the DRM in online music services such as iTunes. my POS mp3 player didn't support .AAC(p), or .mp4(p), so i had to extract using a key to get it to free mp3 and now BT follows me whereever i go and i am

Posted by Sunsnail on May-02-2007 04:08:

Everything gets cracked. I'm surprised it took so long really.

IIRC, there was a crack widely availible the day after Microsoft did those verification tests to foil the tests.

Posted by Fast Turtle on May-02-2007 04:27:

hah

it's no surprise it's everywhere now, whenever you try to ban a piece of information with the law it inevitably becomes more widespread.

Posted by RJT on May-02-2007 14:17:

lol @ the digg guys getting threatened with suits over this.

I'd love to see President HD-DVD try to take on the internets.

Posted by smallSHEEP on May-02-2007 14:28:

what's all this nonsense about?

Posted by Ivand on May-02-2007 14:33:

digg last night went totally batshit, ALL the stories on the front page were about the key, and the first one got dugg over 14k times and then it got deleted, I think it made a new record the previous one was the iPhone story.

Do you guys think that this in conjunction with Wal Mart offering a budget HD-DVD player will win the format wars for HD?

double
no, not at all.
Nobody's trying to sabatoge HD-DVD (in preference to blu-ray or standard DVD). It's just a fight for consumer freedom and against DRM

What I mean is, now that HD DVD is the first one cracked (unless I missed the boat and Blu Ray has been hacked already - which is probably the case), and that there will be budget players available earlier, doesn't that boad well for HD DVD in the format wars?
