rogers is stupid

Has anyone else received a notice from rogers saying that you need to get a new phone by May 30th cause your old one will stop working?

Rediculous. I don't buy a phone with a 3 year contract and expect to have to throw it out a year later, just to be forced to either get a stupid free replacement phone or pay all over again for a decent one. And I can't even log into their site for this 'rogers.com/migrateme' cause my phone number doesn't match their record (my roger's cell phone number ) and their call center has the worst hours and give me alert box popups on mouse over. who honestly makes an alert box pop up when you mouse over text..

plus, it would cost $400 to end my contract early.

Pfft. You aren't allowed to complain unless you are with Bell.

thank you for your insightful post.

Btw, when I bought my phone, I asked what are the main differences between this phone I got (samsung, dont know the model) and the RAZR, at the rogers kiosk in the mall. The sales person told me, if you have the RAZR, everyone will look at you and think woah you have the RAZR. I'm serious, that's what he told me. So naturally after that, I bought the Samsung.

If he would have done is job properly, and told me that the Samsung doesn's use GSM while the RAZR does (i'm assuming it does since they still sell it), and that GSM is the superior technology, then I wouldn't have this problem right now.

The same thing happened to my little brother, dude you're getting a FREE PHONE. I just called Rogers, got them to send him a gsm phone, voila.

Yeah, but isn't there just one option of a free phone? The Nokia 6061? That's all it says on this notice they gave me, or it says you could get the Nokia 6133 for $30 and another 3 year contract.

i worked for rogers.. and honestly i don't think they were selling TDMA phones when the RAZR came out.. but ill be a nice guy because you're complaining soo much. you can get a new phone sent to you without a contract renewal. call this number 1-888-936-7283. be nice.. and you'll get your way.

Hmm..

So..

Do you think Rogers could just be trying to trick me? The notice clearly states that "I must get a new phone by May 30, 2007. Otherwise, my phone will no longer work and my account will be cancelled."

But

I just did a search, and the phone I have "Samsung SGH-P207" is apparently a GSM phone.

Ask Rogers for a HUP discount.

wats wrong with TDMA.. IMO it delivers a WAY better quality signal than GSM..

Posted by DJ Chrono on May-03-2007 02:14:

Unbelievable.

Thank you for letting me know, so I didnt waste a bunch of time on the phone or in their store.

So basically what it comes down to is..

a) They sent me the notice by mistake.

b) They sent the notice to everyone but it uses wording which makes it seem like people have to buy a new phone cause their current one will stop working.

c) They tried to trick me into buying a new phone/ extend my contract unnecessarily.

Whatever the case,

I'm just happy I don't need to buy a new phone.

if they cancel you...you shouldnt have to pay the fee.
check your contract

Posted by rabbitjoker on May-03-2007 03:05:

Rogers is getting rid of their TDMA/Analog network. You will need a new phone or you can't use their service.

Now - if you don't want a new phone I'm certain if you are polite they will cut you a deal and let you out of your contract cancellation fees.

Now - if you don't mind getting a new phone - call Rogers customer service, ask for a manager (not the person who directly answers the phone) and politely explain to them your situation and that you would like to keep using Rogers and see if they'll give you a HUP (Hardware Upgrade Program) discount on a new phone. If not - ask the manager how he suggests the issue be best resolved.

Good luck.

is ur phone analog only? I was told that rogers is phasing out their analog support/whatever entirely, and would be purely digital in a month or two.

is that whats happening? if one only has a phone capable of analog, ur fucked?

(still a celly newbie over here)

Yeah that's what's happening, but according to the internet and Turntabulls, my phone is a GSM phone, so I guess that I don't infact have to upgrade or get a new phone. It's just rogers confusing people (me).

The real problem is, who knows whether a phone uses TDMA/Analog network or GSM network? I was never once told by anyone in rogers whether my phone is GSM or analog.. and it took me some searching online and Turntabulls to figure it out. It's just their crazy notice that came with my bill made it sound like I had a TDMA/Analog phone.

Posted by Jem_hadar on May-03-2007 03:22:

My new phone (just arrived today) is GSM! *Yay*

Glad you got things straightened out re: ur situation.

Posted by FunkyCrew on May-03-2007 03:59:

very confusing thread

a side note - I thought Virgin Mobile and Telus (maybe Bell) were the only TDMA providers? since when Rogers had non-GSM phones? uber strange!

as far as I thought/know - GSM are phones which use a SIM card and can be used with different providers, TDMA/Analog phones are phones which limit you only to your own provider, they are programmed to work with one only, and do not accept a SIM card

I work for Rogers and we havent sold a TDMA phone on a contract for at least 5 years. If your phone has a SIM card then you dont need to exchange it. They are getting rid of TDMA phone on the system and replacing them with free phones. So first maybe call Rogers and ask them whats up before shitting your pants lol. You might have received the letter in error. If you were sold a TDMA phone on a contract then wow you had one shady ass sales guy and you must not like colored screens lol. Even if you have a TDMA phone they are replacing them for FREE. So yah....

Actually Virgin, Telus and Bell all run on CDMA.

Rogers used to run an Analog network using TDMA. But that is like 6 year old technology and older.
