Talking I like trance, it's nice

That's right, it's a trance mix, and it's not all oldschool tunes from the early 90s either (there are a few of them in there though). This mix is more of a nod towards the early 00s, when I used to tune into my local radio station to hear local DJs like Stigma. He and the others on rotation would have a darker, more atmospheric and more edgy take on the '99 anthem-vibe, and I always found this far more appealing than the usual dutch sound that was so popular around then. I do manage to find a tune or two like these today still, but they are sadly becoming less and less common in favour of psy trance and "prog"-cliches.

In any case, there's a bit of the old and new in here. If I was asked to play a trance set today, it would probably look something like this (provided that it wasn't a classics-night).

Project Medusa vs Exor - Moonshine (Exor Mix Pt.2) (Liquid, 2002)
Orchid & Narcose - The Bells (Source Of Gravity, 2005)
Crash Guard - Fragmentation (Bonzai Ltd., 1999)
Roland K - Elixir (Remark, 2002)
The Ambush vs Phools Inc. - Asymmetric (Phools Inc. Mix v.2) (Superstition, 2002)
Sound Process - Colder (Composure, 2007)
Radius - Incubation (Deep, 2001)
Krazy Sandi - West (Dioxine Remix) (Mythoz, 2002)
Art Of Trance - Cambodia (Tunnel Vision Mix) (Platipus, 1993)
Hallucinogen - L.S.D (Twisted, 1994)
Entity - Obfuscate (Shiva, 2006)
Fortress - An Angel Saved My Life (Mark Shimmon & 3rd Degree Bern's Mix) (Superstition, 2000)
Tuna Tremendous - Mesmerize (R&R Music, 2006)
Black Lemon - Cloudbuster (Progrez, 2005)
The Space Brothers - Shine (Qattara Remix) (Manifesto, 1997)
Melonhaus - Asset Stripper (Bomba, 1997)
Fractals - Lifelab (Experiment 1) (Alien, 2002)
Blacklight - Daydream (Camouflage, 1999)
L.S.G - Hearts (Superstition, 1994)

this looks fantastic, judging by the few tracks on there i know. i've been playing 'mesmerize' in particular alot recently & have been after more tracks in a similar style.

i'm getting a pretty shitty download rate but nonetheless.. this will get an airing as soon as it finishes being pulled down

just finished it.. enjoyed it alot. mixing wasn't perfect but most errors seemed to get corrected soon enough. flow was good.. tunes were awesome, especially the second half. my favourite was the fractals track, lovely riff on it hearts worked as a powerful finisher too, and the outro was neat.. although could have prob been a tad shorter

keeping this one

excited about this one - downloading

i really enjoyed this mix.

the programming is really excellent, and it just sucked me in completely. I was working and threw this mix on it helped me focus for a while and then at one point it just grabbed me by the balls and wouldn't let go. Mixing was not perfect as someone said, and though it would make the mix 'better', it was exciting and of course pretty damn good anyways as far as phrasing goes, and you really kept a solid flow through the entire set. The transition from the art of trance track into hallucinogen was pretty remarkable. There were some other really good moments - I was unable to keep still and focus on work. Maybe one criticism I would have with the mixing would be more careful levelling. I like the flanger in the cases where it transforms the timbre of the track like when you used it at the beginning of hallucinogen, but otherwise I think it was used a bit much in sort of an out-of-the-box manner.

Thanks for keeping this kind of music alive. Usually when I see 'trance' mix tracklistings here I cringe a bit

and excellent excellent mix. i will be playing this all summer. I will spread it around.

Finished listening to your set just now, and have to say I'm thrilled at the sound and overall vibe. A lot of what people have already said, I certainly agree with (ie, track selection is great, mixing could be better) but more than anything what impressed me was your take on the classic sound. If you normally spin sets like this, I'd love to hear more. Thanks for the mix!

cheers,
Andrew

Lovin' your work. Some mighty fine tunes on this set...many of which I haven't heard. Much appreciated . I'll be looking out for any more of your sets.

Excellent tracklist!

Thanks for the comments so far guys, glad you're all enjoying it.

I agree with the flanger-criticism, listening back it's quite evident that it doesn't work as well as I had hoped half the time. Gonna be a bit more easy on it next time me thinks.

I'll just echo some of the comments. Good tracklist, excellent programming. Honestly, I think you're one of the best DJs in terms of tracklist and programming. Technically you do need to work on it. Some transitions were really tight though.

This was was pure education in terms of trance. Lots of unknown stuff away from standard ASOT or Anjunabeats BS.

Anyone who claims to be a trance fan has to listen to this set, to get an education about varieties of trance that is out there.

Yes mate, very nice set. Really immersive stuff. Perhaps a little dark in places for my personal taste but was feeling the atmospherics!
The mixing was a tad disappointing as others have touched upon but I loved nearly all the transitions. Tracklist, structure and flow was all well-thought out, unlike almost every contemporary "trance" set.

Posted by wolf-za on May-22-2007 05:41:

Absolutely loved the darker/harder bits - more more... really starts to kick at the 43min mark.

Excellent journey... I like the cross sub-genre mixing although after you get to the immersive/harder/darker segment the others sound suddenly... light weight. Hallucinogen and Entity tracks are absolute classics.

Ramp it up, twist it a little, and don't let the come back down!

Looks interesting...

Its an ok set and not something I would listen to over and over again. The best tracks for me are:

Project Medusa vs Exor Moonshine
Crash Guard - Fragmentation
Melonhaus - Asset Stripper
L.S.G Hearts

You get some cool points for avoiding the obvious artists, though.
