In praise of Japanimation

Never been a fan, but recently, I finally caught some Cowboy Bebop. Now I'm on Trinity Blood and Samurai Champloo.

Yay for Razor (some channel on rogers digital which was on free preview for a while and I caught these series)

Any other recommendation similar to Samurai champloo? Being a history geek, I love stuff like this.

Only if you want a swift kick to the throat

I'm serious though, Ninja Scroll is awesome. Eff Sailor Moon, the real deal is Venus 5. Yeeaaaaaah.

i love anime

if you watch the 9 short clips of Animatrix, you'll watch a who's who in japanimation (ninja scroll, cowboy bebop, aeon flux, akira, vampire hunter etc...)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Animatrix

but besides the aforementioned there are a few standard classics that must be watched

- Princess Mononoke
- Akira
- Ghost in the Shell (inspiration for the Matrix)

etc

and the two most criticalliy acclaimed series of anime?

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
26 episodes, starts off kind of fruity, but near the 2nd half of the series, the character's pyschosis becomes richly developed, and by the end the series becomes epic in scope and vision. awesome.

2. cowboy bebop
watanabe brings his own vision of anime with jazz pop musical influences that are choreographed with the action.

I loved Princess Mononoke!

have you watched Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind?

same director, similar Humans vs. Earth theme, strong female protagonist

if not i highly recommend it!

Posted by Silky Johnson on May-15-2007 22:38:

Awesome, I'll check it out for sure! Thanks.

I own this and watch it about once every 6 months. It's tremendous.

There was also a short series on Spike network about 3 months ago that was extremely well done. Samuel Jackson was poorly used as an annoying sidekick to the main character.....Afro Samurai.

Very neat concept for a story about samurai's.

One of the greatest anime movies is "Grave of the Fireflies" if you have not seen it check it out.

It's not actually Anime. It's done sort of in that style, but it's American. Much better than the movie, which was a letdown for me. My expectations were so high. Carrie-Ann Moss should have played the part.

try Neon Genesis Evangelin it's a classic and it's very good.

Popular ones now are Bleach and Naruto.

Posted by Ni-Cd on May-16-2007 01:35:

I have to agree... for straight up epic / giant "robots" battling type story line mixed with an 'end of the world theme' Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favourite.

For humour, I LOVE El Hazard: The Wanderers (NOT oav...that version is a little weird).

I prefer subtitles, but to be honest, the dubs on both the above mentioned series are VERY good.

For movies, Grave of the Fireflies brings me to tears every time. What a huge tear jerker.

I gotta check out some of these other ones you guys have mentioned...

Oh, if you are into philosophy, Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone Complex (laughing man syndrome) is awesome. I love the tashikoma's and how they come to self realization.
