A robbery and crime spree aided by an unloaded gun came to a halt late Thursday when the gunman met more than his match: a gun with bullets.

Charles Parker Jr., 18, of Detroit was killed when a 53-year-old man pulled out a 9mm handgun and shot the teen, who was armed with an unloaded .22-caliber handgun.

Detroit police are calling it self-defense.

The botched carjacking on Grand River and Prevost came after a string of robberies in Detroit on Thursday, which police said were committed by Parker and four others, ranging in age from 16 to 20.

The robberies began about 8:40 p.m. Thursday at Kentucky and Curtis when a 16-year-old was robbed of his cell phone, a silver chain and his wallet, by at least two of the suspects, police said.

At 9:30 p.m., the robbers attempted to carjack a couple in the driveway of their home in the 19600 block of Appoline, police said. One pointed the unloaded gun at the couple and pulled the trigger.

The teens fled without the car.

Later, police said, the robbers saw a man at a Detroit car wash and tried to carjack him. The one approached with the unloaded gun and the other wielded a baseball bat, police said.

That's when the man washing his car fired, striking Parker.

Parker's alleged accomplices took him to Sinai-Grace Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Hospital security officers detained the other youths until police arrived. Police spokesman James Tate said a 17-year-old Detroit female, 16-year-old Southfield boy, a 19-year-old Southfield man, and a 20-year-old Detroit man are in custody.

They face arraignment on armed robbery charges today in Detroit's 36th District Court.

After the shooting, police questioned the 53-year-old man and released him, noting that he had a valid concealed weapons permit.

Then they gave him back his gun.

dumbass.

I personally prefer to give over my car than kill a 18 year old. (but he did put himself in that position which the car owner didn't have any responciblity for)

what if he has real bullets?

Posted by Dervish on May-21-2007 19:42:

Give him the car...even if I had a gun wouldn't pull it like John Wayne...

Posted by shaw on May-21-2007 19:43:

he still might shoot you.

Posted by metalgearsolid on May-21-2007 19:44:

Perhaps the man was first going to shoot the old man than take his car?

Thumbs up

This guy desrves an award. He protected himself and caught all those bad guys at the same time that robbed numerous people around town and were not going to stop it seemed.

On a funny note: Its unfortunate these robbers could not even afford bullets in a gun Ha ha ok next post.....

Much more likely to if you pull a gun surely though lol

So you are to assume an aggressive assailant pointing a gun at you and demanding your car is not a risk to use the gun against you? Come on.

Posted by Dervish on May-21-2007 20:02:

So someone has a gun pointed at you and shouts "give me your car or I'll shoot you" why yes fumbling for a gun is the best way to get out of that. Unless your Billy the Kid or he doesn't have any bullets (in which you are just about to kill a human being) your DEFINATLY going to get shot now (especially if as in this case there are alot more of them than you).

All the "rah rah kill bad guys" and "assailant" TV talk doesn't negate logic.

if you have to fumble for it, yes, but if, say, it's on your belt, or you can somehow get at it discreetly, fire away.

Your violtating my grass!!!!!

Sorry but seriously, just thought of the mind set that would consider attempting some kinda back flip or something (crouch roll to the side two controlled rounds to the chest area...) in the face of a (possibly) loaded gun in your face rather than giving up an insured piece of metal lol

Posted by UWM on May-21-2007 20:10:

If you possess a valid concealed weapons permit, chances are you know how to handle a firearm.

Yeah but even Jesus can't pull a gun quicker than one which is in your face though lol. Or as in this case out gun 5 or 6 of them (he must have assumed - correctly this time - that none of them had a weapon).

Lets assume your stealling a car (you have a gun - pointed at his head) you tell the person "give me your car or I'll shoot":

Person A reaches for something rather than just getting out.
Person B gets out of the car "hey man relax only a car it's uinsured take it"

Which are you more likely to kill?

It's a car not a family member....

Posted by shaw on May-21-2007 20:20:

so are you taking issue with it because you'd have to kill someone or because you think it's a bad strategy?

Posted by Dervish on May-21-2007 20:30:

Both, if it isn't required to kill someone why kill them? And if the person is smart car jacker they should know car jacking is easyer to get away from than murder.

I agree with your point of view as well, but remember if you pull a gun out on someone you better be ready cause knowing it was an old couple he probably though it was an easy target. Most seniors have guns I know that for a fact and some of them also have trained with guns since they were kids, you see back in the old days they carried guns like we carry cell phones

People carry guns to defend themselves...

If you are running around with a group of 5 people on a crime spree you probably aren't smart enough to consider the consequences of car-jacking vs murder in the first place.

Strip away morality and societal laws and humans are still animals. The #1 instinct is the fight to survive. If you feel your life is being threatened you will do whatever it takes to defend your life, including 'unnecessarily' killing someone who is threatening your life.
