whoa

I had an epiphany today. My whole life, I've always thought the way u should live is this way:

party young, acquire education, marry good looking house wife, have kids, get good high paying job, work til ur 65, retire, matlock, die.

this is how 90% of the population basically lives or strives for. We have had this life structure thrusted upon us and for some of us this is the only way we know how to live. theres got to be more.

I was buying this amazing bedroom set today and was looking at prices and was like goddamn i have expensive taste. but driving home right now i just realized whats the point? and i realized how brainwashed we all are. But what alternatives do we have when it comes to lifestyle? nothing out there seems appealing either.

I think im going to follow my heart and take over a small country and be a powerhungry dictator

THE HEAT IS GETTING TO YOU MAN

The alternatives that i can think of are

Be a Hippie, become religious and devote your life to service to god, or be a bum who begs for money.

no see theres got to be something else. those were the only alternatives i could see.

You know hwat i would like to know. what we as a society are progressing towards. I mean we're always progressing as a society, but is there some type of goal? is space travel our ultimate goal? and if so, are we here just to survive?are we here because our intelligence makes us want to understand everything about everything? is our whole point of our exisatence just the universes way of marvelling at its own beauty?

im getting deep here. let this thread continue as a roll call

i live my life by the 'no regrets' saying

a lot of people are so careful with their money or what they do

you live life once...do what you wanna do and dont look back, cuz its already too late

Posted by Endlesswave on May-24-2007 23:57:

LOL @ the Ewok example.

I think we're stuck in the rut because Governments in the so called 'interests' of their populations are overzealous and greedy. To the point where we're just not able to affect change so we just follow suit and have families (which is alright) but these aren't huge goals in the larger scheme of things. So we're just forced to go along with the way the world and our current societies run. If all of the larger more 'well to do' countries got together and solved REAL problems instead of just how to make crazy amounts money in the interests of maintaining the economy (although I'm not saying the economy should just shut down) the world would be a MUCH better place. I'm an idealist...shoot me.

Interesting thread.

I think that you have a multitude of choices about what kind of life you live. IMO, I find that people in western culture strive too hard to define some sort of set goal in life. More often than not, any goal you achieve in life has a very indirect path. Thus, most people in our culture strive towards a form of control and direction, meanwhile not being able to realize their failure to achieve what it is that they're aiming for. Thus your revalation. The question you asked is freaking awesome man. I hope you're really serious about it. Start reading, and exposing yourself to new ideas and new ways of thinking and rationalizing. There is a lot of scary and cool shit out there. Generalizing your lifestyle into a hippie, or a hipster, or a mobster, or a career, or whatever, I dunno, it seems like these generalizations are just ways to limit the creative aspects of your soul. Its nice to have nice things, but its cool that you reached that conclusion of "what's the point of it". We judge our success with survivability, thus making many people ultimately unhappy down the road if they're not reaching their goals of 'success'. Point of rant: redefine your goals. Instead of reaching for something in life, reach for nothing. Try to let go of everything, and just be. Spend some time like this. Who knows what your mind will come up with.

I totaly agree, but the current state of matters forces humanity, on a large scale, to live in a symbiotic relationship, leeching physical and mental resources. Its a system doomed to failure, eventually. If even one person can break away from this mould, they in turn will affect countless others through their everyday walks of life, and thereby 'sow the seeds of discontent', if you will. If these ideaologies grow, which they inevitably must, all of a sudden one person making a difference in their life becomes a pretty big thing afterall. There is plenty of frustrations about our lives, but as you said, we're trained to be afraid of breaking out of the everyday.

Posted by Zentac_75 on May-25-2007 00:45:

It seems to me you are already living the alternative.

Getting a decent paying job through practical education is something that is almost manditory (unless your born into wealth) so that a person can at least maintain some standard of living. Now the rest is up to you, educating yourself beyond your job requirments is part of the alternative. Postponing family life allows you to travel the world, experience different cultures/outlooks on life, as well as tap a lot of different ass.

CLICHE TIM!!! Variety is the spice of life.

Experiment with food, music, sex, etc. Don't look at your life as a sum of your experiences. That will make you feel like you probably do now. Uninspired searching for answers. Everyone almost accomplishes certain things in life. Some of the Stupidest most irresponsible people on the planet get married, raise family's, retire and age poorly, without so much as wondering WHY????

The fact that your asking such questions opens you (and other's hopefully) to the possible alternatives.

CLICHE!!!"The unexamined life is the one not worth living"

And in regards to liking nice things....as long as you know why you like them. Not that it matters, but I think a quality/expensive bed is important...its where you spend a large portion of your life, regenerating and making babies. Now expensive luxury cars on the other hand....I think are a waste of money/status symbol. Not that I judge people who own them becasue I'm sure they have another take it all together.

Hope that inspires some more discussion.

When is hunting season???? Those Ewok's sound delicious!!!!!!

Posted by Jungle Fever on May-25-2007 00:47:

It all comes back to the question "WHY?". Keep asking yourself that question and you will know what I am taking about. I guess that is just human nature, to seek answers. Don't take things that you know for sure at face value or as the absolute truth. Always keep an open mind to other people's ways of thinking.
