How long does a DJ career span?

Or maybe how long it should span?

Paul Oakenfold seems like never ending..

Posted by distant on Jun-19-2007 20:15:

DJ culture hasn't been popular long enough to calculate an accurate average.

as long as u want

Posted by keithos27 on Jun-19-2007 20:18:

that is such a vague/genereal question... the answer is "it depends"...

a dj that sticks to one genre his/her entire life in one particular place will *probably* have a shorter career than one who reinvents himself and changes with the music.

there are niche markets for every type of dj in the world. even if "trance is dead" there are still plenty of trance djs out there making a good living filling venues. same applies to different genres.

how long will a dj be a superstar dj is a different question (pointing that out since you used oakenfold as an example). there will always be people that will go see oakenfold because either a) they've heard about him from friends, b) they downloaded an mp3 mislabeled and feel he creates EVERY dance song out there, c) they want to see a legend no matter how good/bad he is at least once, etc...

Ask again in 50 years.

Posted by swisstoni_uk on Jun-19-2007 21:40:

the same as any other career i'd imagine!

i couldnt see tiesto spinning into his 50's though... and i certaintly dont think he'd be spinning trance, if trance is still around in 20 years

its difficult as people have said though, because the dance genre is relatively new

lol gold..

but the answer to that question is : "Its ALL about the passion, Babe!" lol

I mean really, how many of us will be listening to edm 40 to 50 years from now? I know I will, most likely. but people that just do it for the fad....wont last. same thing is for djs if they don't love their job and only focus on one crowd....wont last.

DJing has only been around since Disco, thats roughly 30 - 40 years. Then again i haven't heard of any succesful DJs that have been DJing since then.

DJing was around before disco, it was just the crossfading (which eventually became more sophisticated with beatmixing and harmonic mixing) with mixers..that came around the late 70s with disco. Not all DJs crossfade or "mix", you can still be a DJ and not do that stuff...DJing is ultimately about playing music.

You're 15 mate, avoid 50 year off predictions.

I'll be listening to music I like in 50 years. FACT.

That is so true and sucks so much. Holden is nearly deaf and I know a few career DJ's who now have to live with a constant ringing in their ears.

Felix Da Housecat? (well....not quite disco)

Actually, I'm pretty sure Marshall Jefferson still spins, and he's been around since house music was invented. In fact, he was instrumental in the whole invention of the genre as I understand it.

Frankie Knuckles is still DJing. So is Francois Kevorkian (been DJing since the 70's).

forever.

especially in this day and age where green tea and cloning exist.

as long as one can hear the music, should be no problem. I doubt it has anything to do with image or marketability, in the case of, i dunno, the top 9999999 DJs at the moment
