tipping at restaurants

Given this situation what would you do:

Lets say you are waiting on some table you do everything correctly with a smile, albeit fake, and the people decide that you don't deserve more than 5% for your tip. Assuming you own the restaurant or something or are the boss's son/daughter or you didn't care if you were fired would you say something to them or just let them go?
Would you say something like excuse me sir here's your change you obviously need this more than I do!
(If you've seen the movie waiting you know what I'm talking about)

I'd accept that some people are fucking Jews and not let it ruin my day.

You win some, you lose some.

It's not like you can accomplish anything positive by doing something, so just shut up & go take somebody's order.

Some people are just cheap fucks. Dont say anything & leave it at that.

i say throat punch on their way out.

then kick them while they are down and spit.

move to a country that doesn't pay its workers like peasants so that they need tips to survive.

Posted by shaw on Aug-13-2007 03:04:

you've outdone yourself yet again.

Posted by mezzir on Aug-13-2007 03:05:

don't do anything
if you give them lip, it'll just make them harbor a hatred for waiters/waitresses, and tip worse from then on

-coming from someone who works for tips too. its really not worth it

I valet park as my side job so I work mainly off of tips. Average tip is 1$-5$. As long as I get something there is no problem even if it is change whatever. The poeople who don't tip....I stand beside the car and they are like what! so I say i work off of tips. Helps most of the time. Other who are about to drive away I "say thanks for nothing" Then the people who are ready to leave after them say man what a bunch of scumbags lol I am thinking that as well.
The final word is 1 out of every 100 cars will not tip or even less so sometimes you can't stress if you get f'd by a tip. In the end it all averages out each night you will always work unless you have a slow night.

15 - 20% if the service was good.
10% if the service was ok.
0% if terrible service.

/thread.

that's just being a prick... NEVER ask for a tip. This is coming from a bartender/server.

Just keep dave dresden away from your tips and you'll be fine.

lol I like that one

I always give a good tip, I mean, you give up a little bit of money, and it may actually make someones day better, you know? I'll part with the extra cash. Then again, I don't eat out often, so I'm able to do so.

I once tipped a pizza guy 70%

the thing about valet is that sometimes it's not clear whether the the person makes money off tips or if the are paid an hourly wage. I would really like for the dude to just tell me they work off tips and I'd gladly tip more but I usually just do like the 1-2 dollars.

mentioning tips at all is just rude.

there's a reason why it's common practice to conceal them.

Posted by Domesticated on Aug-13-2007 03:32:

As pkc said, the whole "mandatory tipping" thing in the US is stupid.

Tips should be a genuine reward for people who've exceeded your expectations, not a certainty.

What the hell? Two pages (on default settings, none of that 40+ bs) in a thread about tipping in the COR and no mention of Carl Cox?

if you look closely, you'll see a subtle reference.

Posted by Inertia on Aug-13-2007 03:43:

does your mechanic stand by your car and refuse to let you drive out of the shop if you don't tip him?

how about a nurse at the hospital?

in this country, tipping is mandatory. as in, you get charged an extra 10%, which goes to the server. and still, they all expect tips. worse, some people, as in, other costumers, will look at you weird if you decide not to tip. it's amazing.

unless you work 100% off tips (which is a shitty deal), in my opinion, and i have worked minimum wage, 10 hours a day, no commission in an autoshop (so working in a restaurant can kiss my ass) you should not expect a tip as the norm.
