I've already had enough No Music Days this year.

Posted by THE_Chris on Oct-11-2007 19:12:

So they're talking about a Five Year Plan.

Looking up Five Year Plan on Wikipedia gives this.

quote:

Stalin introduced the first plan in 1928, and its success in achieving its goals was declared ahead of schedule, in 1932. Stalin made his motivation in formulating the plan clear when he stated, in 1931, that Russia was a good fifty or hundred years behind the industrial powers of the time, and that they must industrialize "or.. be crushed."

So clearly these people are communists.

I intended to follow through with this the year before, but several things prevented me from truly enjoy No Music Day:

-I went to do my laundry, and the subtle clink-klonk of loose change in my jeans beating against the dryer wall sounded like minimal
-I went for a walk, and passed by a construction site which reminded of listening to Power Electronics
-I sat absolutely fucking still in a soundproof room, with my hands over my ears and held in my breath. Sadly, the rhythmic beat of my heart had me recalling a few gentle ambient interludes of yore.

THIS DAY CANNOT BE DONE!

Posted by nefardec on Oct-11-2007 19:13:

personally I think it might be really cool to experience a day without music, especially since music is not limited to our personal listening, but is used to sell nearly everything in the world, to entertain you while you pick up prescription drugs, to relieve awkward silences, etc

I think we would be able to hear things we´ve never heard before, people, places, and make our own "music" with our experience of daily life.

I think conceptually it´s very cool, but the way it will go over is just as annoying and trivial.

How about you go outside and play hide and go fuck yourself.

But that's pretty much true.

Posted by Salegon on Oct-11-2007 20:17:

Thumbs up

This refers to the "how about a nice cup of shut the fuck up"-idea imo.

The majority of the music we are exposed to during the day is bullshit anyways.

no sound

I once tried to figure out if I've ever went a day without hearing music. I came to the conclusion that it would have been impossible. Even when I'm out treeplanting in the middle of some forest, the cooks have music playing for breakfast and then again for supper. Even when I left my ipod at home for the day of school I would've heard music at the Uni somewhere....
Maybe on a day when I was visiting my grandparents or something, and we just did family stuff all day.... but I still doubt that there was never music playing.

Sometime I'd like to try to go a day without hearing anything at all. That might be interesting.

Be careful what you wish for.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Oct-11-2007 20:57:

Anything that's as ubiquitous as recorded music is these days has the potential to become trivialized. It can become almost like the air you breathe, something you never think about; you can almost forget that it was actually made by a person, that it's not some kind of natural resource that's just there.

I don't think that's true. Certainly not if you're a music fan. Once upon a time I would dismiss most music to the background, but these days I pay attention to almost all of it. You're only really awash with music if you're constantly plugged into the media. If you always have a radio on at work and you're always vegetating in front of the TV then you will hear music near-constantly, but that's largely the point of such activities.

I don't get it. What's the point of having a day without music?
