hiphop ......

My co-worker is planning on throwing a party at a local club as a once a month thing, and had asked me to DJ there..
which is coo.. but the problem is that I would have to play the top40 stuff, which i've never done before. I normally play Trance and House, but agreed to help him out anyways.

I assume that it wouldn't take much to mix top40, but was just wondering if there are ways to make it a bit interesting...

this is an old pm i sent a guy about 6 months ago:

"ok, when i spin, i start at any bpm and then work up or down through songs by bpm's. i usually start around 100bpm though... i organize my music by bpm (in serato). so if i start off at 110,i'll work down to 80 and then jump to 160, or i'll work up to 160 and jump down to 80. i like working down in bpms better than up.. you can really notice pitch changes, so dont make jumps more than 2 bpm. if you have pitch lock or something like that it makes things a lot easier. after you are into the track who's pitch you had to change to get it beatmatched, make sure you set the pitch back to zero (slowly or when there is a instra break w/ a vocal or something). if you read the thread "hip hop" you will also learn a little more about how people mix hip hop... i gave you a list of good songs ranging from 80 to 160 bpm. this is just a start, but its good to have at least 1 song for every bpm when you start your hip hop journey. then when you add songs you like, you will have more than 1 for a lot of the bpms and can easily mix up and down through the diff bpm's. these are new to old rap songs. i put the best song i had for each bpm (my opinion) on this list, so you should be getting off to a good start. you still probably need at least 200 more songs if you are doing a 4 hr gig.

ps) hip hop crowds are brutal, you have to read the crowd and make adjustmentson the fly. you can do big bpm jumps if the crowd looks bored and you are at 80, jump to 120. it helps to pick a song with a vocal intro or something when you're doin a big jump because noone will notice the the big change in bpm. you can do a backspin, echo out, or something like that when making a big bpm jump. be creative! you will learn how to deal w/ the hiphoppers w/experience... it won't be easy."

go to billboard.com and look at the charts. hot 100, pop, and hip hop charts are available. the list of songs i gave you is like a yr old but you will have a good start (1+ song for each bpm). add 200 of your favorite hip hop tracks to this list and you should be good.

i remember the "hardest genre to mix poll" hip hop won by a landslide... its a very challenging genre to mix... my mixing abilities have skyrocketed since i started doing hip hop. mixing a few house/trance/break/etc.. tracks is cake after doing a couple hundred hip hop sets.

I started out doing hip-hop. Not top40 because I'm not a douchebag, and I don't think it is any harder than anything else to mix, but maybe that is because I started with it.

Still haven't met any top40 DJs who aren't douche bags. And I've met a whole lot of DJs.

Saying if you wanted to dj for yourself you would stay in your bedroom is tantamount to admitting the only way you can find work is to cater to the lowest common denominator.

THANK YOU! I can't speak for the bigger markets, but in a small place like Des Moines (shit, even Minneapolis or Kansas City), most clubs and club-goers DO NOT GIVE A SHIT about EDM. People want to dance to Top 40/Hip-Hop. The club/bar owners want you to play Top 40/Hip-Hop. It's that simple, people. Sure, in big cities (and outside of the US) you can play "less popular" music, but it's a fact that if you want to be a successful working DJ in a mainstream market, you HAVE to cater to the crowd.

In most cases top40 is actually GOOD (puts on flame suit). I enjoy watching people rock out to the music i'm spinning and not forcing music the crowd doesn't like down their throats. I am a far stretch from and EDM purist, find skill and enjoying out of everything and if will be a lot more fun and you'll be more marketable as a DJ. The big city thing is completely true, I DJ on a college campus and most of the time I'm playing hip-hop/rap... but there is a time and place for EDM too.
