Format Wars: Blueray vs. HD-DVD

Nobody replied in the technology forums, so i'm posting here.

Spider-man 3, along with other major movie releases are only being released on blu-ray... Is this significant?

I still use floppy discs for school. I don't trust flash drives to save .doc files, or any file for that matter.

this is going to end up like VHS Vs Betamax where the best technology did NOT win, Betamax was the better of the two but VHS won because it was promoted more.

not to mention the PS3 is being marked down...

XVID until they remove the shitty jazz scene.

blue-ray all the way!

Blu-ray Outsells HD DVD Nearly 2-to-1 in US

Home Media Research reports that from January 1 through September 30, Blu-ray sold 2.6 million discs in the US, while only 1.4 million HD DVD discs were sold.

Since it ended in September, the count doesn't include Michael Bay's reluctantly sold 190,000 Transformers HD DVDs, a figure which will probably continue to rise, adding to the HD DVD camp's overall numbers. And the numbers may shift more favorably towards HD DVD as Paramount and Dreamworks maintain exclusivity for at least 17 more months.

Nevertheless, it does suggest that, still without serious pushes from Fox and Disney, the Blu-ray posse is maintaining its lead, and even growing it: Since the advent of high-definition discs back in spring 2006, just over 3 million Blu-ray discs have been purchased stateside, while only around 2 million HD DVD discs have sold.

Yeah, I've read that this was the case.

I've heard that Blu-ray holds more memory, and also uses a different technology from HD-DVD, which makes it more expensive to produce. Does this mean it is better quality?

I agree with SuspicionVandit, that the ps3 will have a major impact. Amazon.com has a 40 gig ps3 and spiderman 3 blu-ray, for $399, which is a considerable drop in price, 100 bucks, I think in the past 3-6 months.

HD-DVD has some exclusives (most notably Transformers which did extremely well) as well since Paramount signed that deal to release their movies in HD-DVD and not in Bluray... I believe the contract to that expires in 18 months though. Transformer's director Michael Bay strongly spoke out against Paramount because he is all for Bluray. I also read earlier today that Walmart will be offering Toshiba's A2 HD-DVD player for $198. But then on the other hand you have Target which is planning on selling only Bluray players.

Anyway, I believe Bluray will end up winning the war. It seems there is a lot more support from film studios with this format. As someone said, its already outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1 in the US, and there are many retail stores that dedicate more shelfspace to Bluray movie titles. It still is too early for anyone to tell though. Hopefully it won't end up a failure like Betamax since I'll be using my ps3 to play Bluray movies.

The only reason I think HD DVD will win is because they've got the first cheap, accessible players.

I think it's the people @ Wal-Mart buying $100 HD-DVD players and $500 HD TV's are going to be "deciders."

Didn't walmart drop the plan to host the $200 HD-DVD players?

I'm not really sure. I'm just going by what I read off Engadget, http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/25/...player-for-199/

Chances are it could not be true since the source is from AVS Forums

Blueray has more support, more functionality and if the ps3 gets up off its fat ass and starts selling nicely, blue ray is to be the winnar

Fuck the format wars. It's easier to download HD movies and play them on my htpc.

Posted by BTG on Oct-25-2007 23:06:

Hd DVD will win simply because it's called HD-dvd.

morons from texas will be like "Oh , i already know and understand this technology. I will purchase"

blue-ray is more of a "Whats blue-ray" sorta thing to hillbillies.

I think anyone that is calling a categorical winner/loser in the latest format war displays a fundamental lack of understanding of it to begin with.

lol, you can't do that, dude.

You have to explain. I honestly have no idea, which is why I made this thread to begin with.

You clearly don't understand the language of morons from texas. It should read "I heared on the devil window that jesus wants me to buy Heavenly Discs (HD) cos they are like tokens to heaven according to Je-us-TV! Praise the lord we saw the scripture on the devil window!"

EDIT: Also you can get combo HD-DVD/Bluyray players it's win/win. In fact according to the guy in the shop it's "future proof" and so will never...ever... be surpassed. Can't wait to watch holograms on it.

It is far too early to begin making predictions. There are so many variables that can influence the outcome of the war. And really, in today's global economy, I dont see why they cannot co-exist for the forseeable future. Some studios have gone with blu ray, others with HD. So if you want specific titles you might have to support both, and indeed there are players being made that can play both formats.

The war is very far from being over, so like I said, calling a winner at this early stage is a bit silly, unless you're a recognised expert in this field, which none of us are
