James Holden

Going to see him on December 2. All I've heard from him is Horizons, Pacific and Nothing. What kind of music should I expect? Tracks or livesets that you can recommend?

Thanks

My first clubbing experience was James Holden for 4+ hours. It was absolutely fantastic.

He plays nothing like any of the tracks you mentioned. His mixing can be fairly spotty but overall it is solid enough. Expect wicked tracks consisting of "minimal" tech, tech house, techno, and weirdness. It will be lovely.

Why would be helpful

Well I'm a big Holden fan ever since I've first heard of him and I nearly cried when I missed him last month due to the lack of mullah so my opinion is a little suspicious. Few reason: although not much concerning his sets he's an amazing musician and producer, he's has a wide fan base, He can deliver a great flow to a night, his sets although not technically wonderful are arguably flawless with amazing vibe, he's just one of the guys that has it down. It's like I say dj's have it, don't have it, or learn it. James Holden has it...

edit: he also seems to be a very sympathetic, chill guy..

He is probably the only dj whose sets I download without hesitation. Yes, he is mixing isn't great, but the track selection and the vibe make up for it. You just cannot miss a Holden gig. Where will he be playing at on Dec 2? Because there is nothing going on for him on that day according to his schedule on myspace.

I forgot

James Holden is funnayyyyy. And a stoner which is also a (+) in my book. I wish he would play like his Balance CD. That CD is f.i.r.e.

Probably one of the worst dj's I've seen recently. His set at cocoon this year was bad beyond belief, absolutely no atmosphere while he was on, his mixing was gash and the tunes he played were just plain awful..

never had the chance to see him live, but his livesets are almost always very good even if the mixing is hardly ever great - but then i don't care at all about the mixing anyway

Saw him this year at timewarp and extrema outdoor. In both cases he played brilliantly. Everybody went nuts.

Posted by Allied Nations on Oct-29-2007 17:30:

his mixing is his mixing, it wouldnt be the same without it... def of the gys where i dont even pay attention to the beatmatching

saw him twice this year, one indoors the other outside, awesome both times

Posted by woscar on Oct-29-2007 17:53:

I don't know what is it with everyone that says his mixing is shit...I saw him live on February and he fucking rocked the place. I didn't hear one single fuckup and I'm the kind of guy that notices that sort of thing at parties. Not that I'm focusing on that trying to find any, but I just notice.

IMO, he played the best set I've ever heard LIVE...only second to Hernan Cattaneo's set on October 4th. In track selection, programming and mixing. He probably had an inspired night, who knows?

Posted by MindShifter on Oct-29-2007 21:56:

holden impressed the hell out of me this year, every set i've downloaded has been great (piknik elektronik/dance dept/klubbers fm etc).

saw him live too and he fuckin rocked it, i hadn't seen him since his balance tour (obviously a long time ago), so it was good to see that technically he has come a long way from where he was. he also seemed to be a lot more confident, seemed really into what he was playing.

as with any show you go to the best thing you could do is go there expecting NOTHING.

me neither, I dont know where people get this from, I have heard lots of his sets and yes there is an occasional trainwreck, but I dont care because the two tracks he mixes fits so well together and the intention of the mix is brilliant most times, maybe people noticing those trainwrecks are put off by the bad beatmatching and just label the transition "bad" because of that. Again, he always manages to get back on track despite a few seconds of thrumbling (is that a word?) beats

like allied nations put it, he is one of those djs where I dont care about beatmatching.
