A planetary system that may contain life has been found.

| A planetary system that may contain life has been found in orbit around a Sun-like star 41 light years from Earth - or 240,906,832,298,136 miles. The discovery has excited Nasa, where astronomer Dr Geoff Marcy told a conference last night: "It has me jumping out of my socks." The most significant point of the discovery is that it indicates that planets with temperatures similar to Earth and a plentiful supply of liquid water could be common in the universe. Scientists have guessed at this possibility for some years, but this is the first hard evidence. Nasa announced that for the first time five planets, all of them huge, have been found in orbit around a star known as 55 Cancri. |
That's really exciting news
NY Times: A Planetary System that looks Familiar
Scientific American: Record Fifth Planet Discovered Around Distant Star (Multiplanet systems like our own may not be so unusual)
BBC News: Astronomers discover new planet
Guardian Unlimited: Could this be Earth's near twin? Introducing planet 55 Cancri f
Fox News: God gave us a new planet in case ours heats up
hahahaha @ fox news.
that's cool, but what (if any) indication is there that this particular planet would have similar characteristics to earth? is the size of a star and the orbit around it the only two variables for a habitable planet? how do they know there is water on it?
someone must find me answers

is this ever possible?

taking a photo of ourselves as the light goes around the ring of the universe?
^^^ Haha, Interesting. Might be possible. Is the universe a ring though?
I though it was a piece of string?
Thread needs moar experts.
Its about time someone talks about something interesting. You guys were busy talking about useless shit...flipping omlets, "oh my cat killed my dog", one two pikachu whoop de doo blah blah blah

| Originally posted by Omega_M Since the elements of the universe are same everywhere, my guess is that life exists only where conditions that are fundamentally similar to earth exist. That means a vast majority of the variables and not just the planet orbit and star size, need to be just right for creating a habitable environment. Having said that, local variables greatly affect the way species evolve. It is hard to say how different they will be from us. Life form exhibits infinite diversity on this earth itself !! what can we say about some other planet ? Except maybe that we share the same fundamental causes for existence on our respective planets. |

In a few thousand years, they're going to refer to these times as the "look but can't touch" age. We discover things, but can't do shit since we have no means of getting to them. And the few planets we do have access to, we just manage to crash probes into.
its all hypothetical research really....i mean, no one actually SAW th eplanet...its all based on the way that other things move around in a certain area.
coulda been just a spider on their telescope. lol
