Upgrading RAM

Guys,

Im about to purchase more RAM for my PC. Im running an AMD Athlon 1.68 GHz with 224mb RAM currently. Would my motherboard be compatible for 2GB you think?

Also, is it plug and play? ie: once installed i should see a noticeable difference in performance straight away?

Cheers

224 MB, how the hell did you get such a weird amount of RAM?

Anyway, yes going to 1-2GB RAM will give a SIGNIFICANT boost in windows/programs etc.

But you'll need to buy the right memory and probably scrap whatever current memory you have installed. DDR memory should be installed in pairs to use the faster data transfer.

download CPU-Z and find out your motherboard and post it.

yeah. download cpu-z. your motherboard may not be able to hold that much and it'll also help you find out the particular type of ram, in pin configuration, bus speed and maximum amount supported. No point buying what won't work.

go to a store with your motherboard manual and buy the apropiate ram memory..

OK I downloaded it guys and it brought up the following...

You should buy PC2700 DDR RAM.

2 x 1GB RAM if you want 2GB. 2 x 512MB if you want 1GB.

Remove the 256 memory stick that's already inside.

Posted by Zombikiller on Nov-10-2007 13:08:

Cool bro, thanks!

Posted by Ian on Nov-10-2007 13:19:

aye you'll get a good performance boost, but obviously the clock speed of your cpu won't get faster, since it's an old chip

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Nov-10-2007 13:21:

it could possibly be cheaper to buy a new mobo + ram + processor you know

hell, 1 Gb sticks of 800 mhz ram are $26AU each! the 2700 stuff you need is like 10 times that price.

Can you please tell me how you interperate these results?

he googled the motherboard most likely and it'll give him the specs of what to use etc.

haha. im retarded; i use firefox with text size enlarged, and the wrong values were coming up for components. some ram gets quite expensive when it gets older and goes out of production, i thought this might be a case of that. but no, im retarded.

its fedor pounding cro-cop in my avatar

when fedor fought babalu they couldn't punch to the face on the ground and babalu was doing well.

I wouldn't listen to Cloudburst regarding the need for 2 memory sticks. Running the memory in dual channel probably woun't result in a performance boost you'll be able to detect. However there could be stability problems if you don't used matched pairs.

Your best best would be to buy a single 1GB stick of generic DDR RAM and put that in the slot where your 256 stick is currently located, then move that stick to the first free DIMM slot on your motherboard. You might find that PC3200 is easier to get hold of than PC2700 and this should work fine, you can always run memory slower than it's rated speed.

Also, the reason you currently have 224MB RAM displayed is because your graphics adaptor (probably build into the motherboard) is taking 32MB for itself.

YOU GOTTA GET MORE RAM

as mentioned installing in pairs is not true. and the whole thing about matched pairs has no effect either. its only good when overclocking for stability issues related to quality control and having similar matched performing pairs.

cloud: this isn't old ass simm memory (might as well lump rambus in there too. rambus is basically a simm on sterroids anyways) so no need for pairs. read up. also dual channel is the only way it should be installed in pairs but only if your going to take advantage of it. something he can't do as his chipset iirc is too old.

Yep, having used that mobo in 2 builds, it does have onboard shared graphics.

DDR RAM is expensive now that it's old tech, 2GB will set you back 60ish.

For 66ish you could get:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/115961
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/133379
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126790

This would be a major upgrade to your whole system

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Nov-12-2007 10:29:

the only difference in "matched pairs" is that the two sticks have been tested together. its exactly the same ram quality as non matched pairs.

I also want to upgrade my RAM but I have a laptop and not sure if my laptop can support dual or not, and is RAM different for a laptop?

for ram companies i would go with

OCZ or Corsair, just about the only 2 i would buy
