Why are poor people fatter?
It's pretty well known that in Europe and America, rates of obesity are significantly higher among the poor.
Why is that the case?
mcdonalds is cheaper than subway
fruit is expensive ![]()
there's always plenty of aborted kids to eat
EDIT: >change thread title to: are poor people tastier?

I've heard the "bad food costs less" explanation a lot, but it makes no sense. How fat you get ultimately depends on how much you eat, not what you eat. You could eat nothing but McDonald's and still not get fat, as long as you ate a small enough amount.

When welfare people shop and don't have enough money to pay for all the food they have in their buggy, what do they put back? Exactly!

Speculation?
People in better physical health tend to half more willpower. Of course this could be completely limited to factors which may affect only physical health, but it tends to be that the more willpower somebody has, the more successful they are at their lot in life - they aren't apathetic, they possess a strong degree of self-efficacy, and this quite often equates to a position of high individual productivity. Quite frankly, people who are more fit of body and mind tend to be more efficient on an individual level, and this often equates to financial well-being in western society.
If logic follows suit, the opposite must be true about fat people - they possess very little willpower or care for their craft. And it becomes quite apparent in their bodies.
But perhaps, since the impoverished also quite outnumber the wealthy, obesity rates merely seem higher? There are many different factors contributing to this fat-nomenon.

My post in PDD I made last year about nutrition- here
If you want a slightly more serious answer as to why.
Healthy food is incredibly expensive. This is a no-brainer.

I disagree that healthy food is more expensive. Rationed out properly, I'm sure that one could eat relatively healthy on a modest budget.
I would relate it to someone being less educated, not having the proper understanding of nutrition or not understanding the value (damage to your body) of eating healthy food. I would be making the assumption that those that are poor are also less educated. Yes, I said assumption.

| A few years ago, an obesity researcher at the University of Washington named Adam Drewnowski ventured into the supermarket to solve a mystery. He wanted to figure out why it is that the most reliable predictor of obesity in America today is a persons wealth. For most of history, after all, the poor have typically suffered from a shortage of calories, not a surfeit. So how is it that today the people with the least amount of money to spend on food are the ones most likely to be overweight? |
