How do you deal with...

Insomnia

last night i went to bed at 1am and fell asleep pretty much right away and woke up at 10am. quite a bit of sleep and had a nice last day of class and studying. however its 415am right now and im wide awake. you'd think that after 18 hrs of being up, id be ready for bed.

when u cant sleep and you really want to, what methods do you use?

Do you have a regular sleep pattern? Many students don't (I used to have a very irregular sleep pattern - I used am a student), and this can cause insomnia.

not trying to hijack, but lately I've been waking up in the morning and in the middle of the night with my heart flying out my chest, I literally have to lay there for 5-10 minutes taking deep breaths to calm myself down anyone had this before?

Posted by Spin Laden on Dec-04-2007 13:15:

speed?

Posted by zokissima on Dec-04-2007 13:16:

I typically get out of bed, glass of red wine, or something like that, and just lie back down. It usually does it.

As for the panic attacks at night, I dunno, could just be repressed anxiety..?

It has been happening to me too, but not everynight. It's like I wake up with a heart attack for no reason.

Are you writing exams right now?

If so, stress is most probably the reason.

Please see a doctor.

I usually hop on TA and within minutes I'm head down on my keyboard.

hey majstore. are you my brother or something? cause i swear we think alike.

couldnt agree more, red wine does the trick

Posted by Irishaddict on Dec-04-2007 19:31:

lay in bed with your eyes closed and tv/radio/lights/etc off

a lot of the time it just takes all my senses being less engaged for me to fall asleep

also, don't think about it.. 'OMG I CANNOT SLEEP!!!' going through your head will not lend itself heavily to actually falling asleep

Both good ideas to help you fall asleep, but not stay asleep. Alcohol in general helps you to pass out, but disrupts your sleep patterns, and overall leaves you with a less effective night of sleep.

For me, the best trick is a full stomach. Although it is terrible for you, sometimes I just have to.

Try stretching, or exercise. Stretching improves blood flow, and just plain makes you feel good, and comfortable. Ever since I started a serious stretching/yoga regimen (P90X!), I sleep a lot better.

The best trick I've discovered is hot milk and honey! That usually puts me into sleep mode. I also suffer a lil bit of insomnia The way i deal with it is i stay up the entire night and by the next day eventually get tired. During the holidays is when most ppl are stressed and have sleepness nights..

what i cannot understand is how my dad gets up in the middle of the night to smoke cigs,,, like at 4 am!!! to smoke,, i could never fall asleep after a cig!
