kenya

does anyone else seem to care that kenya pretty much one of the most stable countries in all of africa is turning to shit? granted i care because 98% of my family lives there and our tribe is the one being attacked/burned to death in freakin churches but seems like whenever i try to talk about this craziness like an adult few seem to care or know enough to talk about the situation. kinda frustrating especially since i am able to discuss stuff like this that happens in countries that i am not personally close to and if i don't know something i try to learn something. any thoughts or comments?

tribe...kenya is full of them who don't like each other.

Don't know much about Kenya at all. My friend was born there and moved to Sydney when he was a kid. He's now in India with his new wifey.

What's with the burning of the churches? Religious differences between tribes?

I think few seem to care because most of us here have written sub Saharan Africa off by now.

no religious differences, kikuyus apparently went there to hide from the violence which didn't seem to work because luos found them anyway. this is because a luo guy lost presidential election to a kikuyu guy. at the end of the day i think the kikuyu guy is a sketchy fuck but whatever i wouldn't go around and kill people with machetes or burn them in a church.

Those who pay attention to world affairs likely know at least a little of what's happening, I know I did prior to this thread; however, you asked why few seem to care. Truth is, those of us in the developed world have very little interest in sub-Saharan Africa and even less hope that it will ever be able to sort out it's problems long enough to dig itself out of the horrible situation it has been wollowing in since the end of colonialism. People like yourself are the problem, identifying yourself by a tribe rather then a national or pan-national identity, trying to scratch out a menial little advantage for your tribe at the expense of everyone else. Why in God's name would we care enough to waste resources and possibly people trying to keep the peace in a place where the population seems hell-bent on killing each other just so they can be or continue to be the exploiters for a while?

That's a good way of looking at it. There's more to the world than the little town/city that we live in.

basically kikuyu president runs for re-electon and his main opponent is a luo. took 3 days for the votes to be counted...luo was FAR ahead in the beginning but at the end he supposedly lost. luos are claiming they were cheated and blame all kikuyus -> kenya turning into a hot mess.

I care more about Kenyan history. Why are these two tribes together, if there's so much hate? It's been 40 years already! If they really can't get along, can't they declare independence from one another or something?

So was Zimbabwe at one point until everything got nationalised, then we lost everything there and the world still sits back doing nothing but 'tsk tsk'. (Its probably because they don't have any oil, democracy and stability gets enforced by people capable of doing something if you've got oil... if you just grow food they don't care )
Kenya was a bit of a shock though I must admit, it's fairly hard to get unbiased news out of Africa by Africans and the western sources only cover the bad things happening.

Posted by Lilith on Jan-02-2008 20:47:

I get up every morning about 6, workout for about 1hr, shower, makeup and at work sometime around 9-ish. Today I'm working from home though so I get a spare hour before I have to actually do something.

Shit, that reminds me, I have work today at 9 too. Perhaps I shouldn't have stayed up all night listening to Adam Beyer and downloading Jeff Mills sets?

colonial footprint brought them together...no idea about the dislike. i didn't think they hated each them so much, i think people just went about their business se[arately. even here in the US can't say i know people from other tribes well just kikuyus. if you talk to my mom who has lived in the US since she was 19 there is still that "those people" type mentality. she doesn't dislike them but there is definitely a feeling of they are different.

I saw this on the news feed the other day and was appalled. There were over 25 children in that church as well. Whatever the differences are there is no justification for burning up kids! I think we in the US really take for granted the seamless transfer of power we have. It's just not so in many parts of the world.
