What do you think of the minimal trend?

After reading in a few threads people speak of the current minimal trend in a not so positive manner, I was wondering what everyone actually thought of it. I've started to notice that it is taking over such a wide range of electronic music. Personally, I'm loving it, just wanted to know if you guys dig it or not.

I enjoy productions with minimal qualities, not so much 'pure' minimal per say. But with any genre, I need variety. DJ's that stick to hammering out one specific sound bore me to death.... but a sprinkle of minimal in a set I thoroughly enjoy.

this thread is minimal.

I don't like pure minimal, but I do enjoy occassional minimal influence set. This may have something to do with me liking tech house in general. Straight up minimal just bores the hell out of me.

Don't like how much minimal has done to kill hard techno and generally slow down bpm in techno, but that's just me.

Interesting to see lots of bleepy minimal influenced techy prog house coming out.

These two sets (from a TA) are my fav from minimal ish stuff

A full minimal set is very hard to do right. Also, a lot of new minimal tracks are pretty cheesy. However, my favourite kind of set would be a mix of tech-house, minimal, and/or techno.

ala Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Richie Hawtin, Marco Carola, John Gaiser, Marc Houle

+ 1

Thats what kept me there all night.

Posted by samhouse on Jan-04-2008 01:21:

im all for a little sprinkling of minimal.

as jeff mentioned above "variety is the spice of life".
A straight up minimal set would bore the living shit out of me.

a nice blend of minimal, tech-house and techno works well for me usually. The set Liebing played earlier on last year (not the 21st of december one) at footwork describes that sound pretty well i guess.

Hahaha, that is not true at all. I listen to trance, classical, techno, and some house - but yes, dnb/jungle is probably my favourite. I just never got into minimal. I guess I don't "understand" it like everyone else.

I like this minimal trend a whole hell of a lot better than the electro one!!!! Cant stress that enough.

But....

Fucking EH! That was a most incredible of sets! My favourite from 2007.

Simply otherworldly for me.

I just posted a gaiser set in the techno thread. That guy is absolutely amazing, i love that type of minimal- no real buildups, never gets to hard but the beat just doesnt stop and it is always groovy

Victor Calderone playing minimal in his sets is so good...

*drools*

That was like one of my favorite sets of all time!!! The man rocked my world!!!

Posted by geroin on Jan-04-2008 04:12:

carola set in the gallery was not minimal, it was more techno than anything else even though he did drop a few minimal tracks here and there

as for minimal, i have not so far heard a proper minimal set in toronto yet, while we do get to see a lot of djs who do play around with it minimal is nowhere near what is happening in europe where it took over. I don't go to many events so whoever thinks i'm wrong can correct me. Most events (90%) are house in toronto with occasional trance, dnb, techno, psy event. So far i've heard only a few sets with majority of minimal, audiofly, richie hawtin, nathan barato occasionally, manzone and strong occasionally, johnny white, kenny glasgow, lee burridge (sometimes) a few more..

ive noticed many have difficulty distinguishing between minimal, techno, tech house. as for minimal, i like it in smaller amounts. as said earlier, a pure minimal set would probably get really boring. but throw it in with some other genres and its quite effective, quite like what roaches, vjs, and some others do

i disagree, you have to know how to do it properly and it will not be boring at all. You don't drop same shit with the same beat over and over, you have to play around, there is so much variety in minimal out there, it's not just one sound.
Most proper minimal/techno djs we don't even see booked in Toronto just because they are too expensive and the turn out is shit. Villalobos, Luca Bachetti, Boris Brejcha, Gui Boratto, Luciano, Gaiser, Pan Pot, Radio Slave etc etc

Posted by jchung52 on Jan-04-2008 04:22:

perhaps.. guess i havent listened to a fulll one live
