Crash Mansion Nightclub Fight Escalates: One Dead, Two Wounded

LOS ANGELES -- A gunman who killed a young man and wounded two others outside a downtown Los Angeles nightclub was at large Friday, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at about 1:30 a.m. at the Crash Mansion L.A. Club near West Olympic Boulevard and South Grand Avenue, after a young woman was stabbed on the dance floor, said a sergeant at the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Station.

Joseph Covina, 19, of Downey, died of multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

The stabbed woman was treated at a local hospital and released, said Los Angeles police Lt. Paul Vernon.

The wounded men's injuries were not considered life-threatening, Vernon said.

The gunman escaped.

Most of the patrons were 18 to 20 years old, as the business was operating as an over-18 club, Vernon said.

"We will be looking closely at the business practices here with our vice unit and the city attorney's office," Vernon said this morning. "We've had other disturbances at this same location before it closed down under the name Grand Avenue Club."

Vice detectives may question the Crash Mansion promoter, Vernon said.

"This is one of those roving parties that moves from place to place," Vernon said. "We'll be looking at the location, as well as the promoter aspect, and whether we've had problems with them before."

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call homicide detectives at 213-972-1254 or (877) 529-3855.

Damn stupid punks! Heard about it on the news early this morning. What a way for the families to start their new year.

Not trying to get any undies in a bunch, but was it a Hip-Hop night or just some other kind of event?

i just know one thing....this time it wasnt me!

...sad...thats why security doing their jobs at clubs is always important so as to try to limit these situations...

is crash really a "loose" place to enter? ive never been there so i have no idea...just wondering...

The shooting happened outside in the parking lot, not inside. Even with tight security, there's very little that can be done to control a situation like that on the parking lot.

I think it was a thursday night since the report said, at large on friday so must have happened friday early morning.

Come to think of it, what other clubs here in LA are lax?

...

I like how the report doesn't specify the causal connection between the person who stabbed the girl on the dance floor and the guy who got shot in the parking lot.

Bottom of the barrel.
'Orion' is the only LA venue I can think of, which is worse.

ahhhh i remember seeing those. it doesn't look so bad IMO. although, my expectations for a venue aren't that high. it just really depends who's playing.
