Shame / Disagreement Promoters Who Send Txt Msg SPAM

I'm sorry, but this really gets under my fucking skin. I find it such an invasion of privacy...

Facebook, email, fine. I mean it's pretty much fair game, and honestly 99% of the time when I'm on my computer I LIKE to know what's happening around the city. Even if I get multiple facebook events for the same party, I still like to know who's promoting what/where, etc etc. I just delete the facebook msg. The point being, it's a medium to which I'm OPEN to promotion/marketing, whatever.

HOWEVER... sending me a txt msg on a Tuesday while I'm eating dinner for a club event that's happening on the Saturday is a fucking joke. It's tacky, rude and fucking annoying.

Do you guys ever reply to these txt msgs for guestlist? I'm really hoping this trend slows down...

I know that unsolicited commercial calls to your cell phone are illegal in Canada. I wonder if the same holds true for SMS messages.

Posted by ali92 on Feb-04-2008 20:19:

Even worse is don't you pay for them messages?!

Although this doesn't happen to me often, it really piss me off when it does.

hell no. promoters who do this type of stuff r clearly on the bottom of the food chain. all i ever do is create an event, if im running a glist, it will be posted in the event. ill shoot a reminder 2-3 days before hand to remind them of the glist possibility (cuz lots of people are last minute). then day of the event, ill shoot a reminder saying whos name they'll be under and what the deets of the glist/event will be.

Wow, I didn't even know that happens...

That would definetly piss me off too!

because who wants to get all excited that they got a text and then find out its spam

As a promoter, text messaging is an important tool, when done properly.

If I send a text message, it's for a huge event (ie big DJ, long weekend party, my birthday, boat cruise, etc) so it doesn't get annoying to the receiver that way.

If you send a text every week about the same party with locals, it gets annoying. But when I text, it's for something big, so that's why texting is important to me...I don't dillute it by texting all the time.

I wouldn't send a text for something 5 days away either, people forget or get annoyed.

Send it the night before or in the afternoon the day of...it's a good last minute reminder.

But I can see where you are coming from jonjon!

True that. Most providers offer unlimited incoming SMS messages now days. I remember having an argument with Telus Mobility's security division about the lunacy of charging for incoming SMS... technically it's possible to send a zillion SMS messages (untraceable if you know how) to known NPA/NXX blocks for a certain provider that will in essence result in an inflated bill if incoming SMS is charged.

lol now I'm worried because I know you have my number...

Personally, I don't care if the party is happening at the Skydome and the promoter txt's me that day. IMO my personal cell phone is off limits...

Hmm I don't think they charge for incoming messages anymore, I'm not too sure about that well for Rogers atleast...

I agree, I started noticing last summer this text thing on a weekly basis from two promoters for their weekly club events and cruises etc but i never responded. I thought it was annoying as hell and I eventually text the promoters back and asked them to take me off their mass texting spree ...

sorry to hear jon

if i ever receive a txt message i will be very upset

fortunately i havn't given out my mobile number to ANY promoters

Posted by jon jon on Feb-04-2008 20:38:

(...more in relation/comparison to Facebook as a marketing tool) If someone is spamming me too hard I can just delete them from my friends list. Done.

In this situation, what am I going to do? Call Rogers and pay the $10 to get the number blocked. WTF.

Just reply, and asked to be removed from their list.

If they continue, post a thread with the persons name, so we can all heckle him/her from afar.

Posted by FunkyCrew on Feb-04-2008 20:42:

a few of my friends who are promoters do it all the time
no matter how much I ask them to stop, they still do it, come saturday morning

Fair enough, that is my mistake. But it's not really the issue either.

My co-worker was being harassed by some dude calling and SMSing him. He reported the issue to a special division of the RCMP to specifically deal with such matters...The RCMP got the provider to trace the calls/SMS messages, as well as had them isolate and block the offending transmissions... All free of charge. The investigation is ongoing, however it looks like the sender might be charged under the harassment laws.

who remembers the thread (threads??) about this back 3-4 years ago (or was it more, cant recall exactly). . .

a huge debate errupted. it became especially a big deal, bc back then ppl were still generally having to pay for all incoming msgs. they werent free as is the case these days (years) for all cdn cell phone companies (AFAIK).

if one is paying for incoming msgs, god, id of course be even more pissed by the spam / unwanted promotion msgs! not only are u being annoyed as jon jon said, but ur freakin' paying for that annoyance too!

Posted by Shaya007 on Feb-04-2008 21:18:
