Shame / Disagreement EDM clichés - c'mon ppl, start being original!

thought I'd start a rant about cliché in EDM music. feel free to add yours if I missed anything:

1. 303 assseeeeed line - ok, this has got to be the most overused crap like EVAR!

2. Farty bass - SvD got away with it. Prydz turned it into an art form. The rest of the herd followed, trotted by the likes of Alex Morph and AvB himself. Stop. please. all this farty eeelektro shit is funky but quite trite and quite overused.

3. Stutter effect. Wow, BT really left his inprint for like the last 8 - 9 years on the scene since he injected it into EDM mainstream. You know who else used stutter effect (with BT's help)? that's right - N'sync. faaaaagz!!!

4. Matrix Phone Bit Crusher. Ok, it was really cool in Matrix - very digital, dopler-like effect that crunched bits into sub 8-bit territory. Wicked. Not anymore dawg, everyone and their grandmother used it in the track.

5. F*cking nylon guitar samples in trance tracks. It does not sound like a guitar, OK? Play the real thing well, record it or DON'T USE THIS SH!TE! Annoying to f*cking hell! Nothing ruins the track for me faster than a cheesy nylon guitar or any f*cking guitar for that matter in it. Very few tracks done it well because they used REAL guitar. The rest failed miserably.

6. Same friggin chord progression with a different beat and slightly modded arps. Yeah, I know you can play "that choon" 10 different ways - that doesn't mean you should make a track that sounds JUST LIKE IT! Aren't you a cheeky monkey - let's take same chords, create a slightly different arp pattern and voila! Who needs originality anyway.

7. Minimal beeps/bleeps/swooshes farts. Look mate, either finish the goddamn track or don't release this 1/10 finished piece of garbage. Zabiella, Villalobos, oi mates, are you f*cking listening????
(yeah I know they don't care... but minimal sux big time)

8. If you decide to do vocals, at least come up with something more clever than "your eyes/I realize", "your heart/apart", "feel sorrow/tomorrow", etc. cheeze. this one is especially precious: "Time goes by From the point of no return You've gotta be strong enough to learn". well, thank you for such a deep meaningful advice, oh trance yoda!

9. Sad slow strings. Look, this is club music - not a fucking funeral wake. Take this shit to chaimber, it's trite and it's a major downer. Very few can execute it well - Corsten (with Orbit's help). chances are you most certainly can't. so, stop.

10. 16 to 32 to 64 step quantized drum roll for a build up. Stagnant pattern, plaguing trance since 99 (the last time it was fashionable).

Ok kids, class dismissed. Now go and create an original music this cranky tallentless hack who hasn't produced anything worthwhile can enjoy (or bash). Now, get off my lawn!

Somehow I don't think EDM is really ideal for you mate.

Posted by Sean Walsh on Feb-10-2008 03:31:

While I feel your post is absolutely idiotic, I do agree that the synth guitar bullshit has always sucked ass and should be purged from existence.

Posted by Sebastien on Feb-10-2008 03:41:

Whilst sometimes those things can be annoying... You pretty much just ruled out every EDM everything EVERYTHING!!

Posted by Project-K on Feb-10-2008 03:55:

It's funny that you bash on minimal because pretty much all the fresh innovative EDM I've heard in the last few years has either been tech house or somewhat into minimal territory. Otherwise I mostly agree - producers, trance producers especially, are running out of ideas. Seems like it's just the same formula being rehashed again and again. That's mostly why I barely listen to any EDM anymore.

Posted by T-Soma on Feb-10-2008 04:04:

Did it ever occur to you that some people like to make music for their own enjoyment?

Posted by 3F05Q on Feb-10-2008 04:22:

thought I'd start a rant about cliché in rock music.

1. Freaking guitar with distortion.. it's been overused for DECADES! Let's get original and start using things like the V-accordion or the glockenspiel.

2. Acoustic drums are getting OLD! The same snare, the same toms, I can't stand it anymore.

3. Intro - verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge - chorus - outro. The same old patter over and over. For once I'd like to hear a song with only a bridge. That's it, just a bridge.

I think you get my point. If there's only one thing to ask, it's be for some of those hard hitting melodies that give you chills. Haven't heard one of those in a while. Spot on with the fake guitar thing, though.

You're not very smart are you? Every genre has its own cliche stuff. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. Simple as that.

And as you talk your shit and are trying (but failing horribly) to be humorous then i'd love to hear some of the music YOU make...

...but I get the feeling though that you're not even a producer. Just here wasting forum space.

If you wanna hear something original in music then create something yourself instead of complaining about what YOU think others over-do or do wrong.

Thanks.

oh i know! a 3000hz test tone with no dynamics.....

now thats original hey hey

Posted by [Alpha]Dave on Feb-10-2008 10:45:

One of the dummest posts I've seen in a while. It seems that you hate allmost everything about EDM, so why bother listening to it? Or if you think it is so easy to "just be original", let's hear some revolutionary original choons popping out from your studio then? But as someone mentioned earlier, it seems like you're not even in to producing, wich makes your post even more idiotic. One more thing, have it accured to you that perhaps muscians can sometime make music for their on satisfaction (not just to win the most-original-artist-wins competition...). Btw 3F05Q, that rock-example.. good one, spot on!! xD

Posted by Zak McKracken on Feb-10-2008 13:36:

while i agree on that the post is stupid i kinda agree most of it lol. it isnt much creativity now adays but why do one have to be superoriginal everytime? just dont overdo stuff is my opinion, be more modest with everythinh

Posted by wayfinder on Feb-11-2008 09:24:

Please, please, please - no more "breathy female vocal noodling along to single-note basslines". You know the kind of song I'm talking about...

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Feb-11-2008 09:28:

1. The 303 rules. Acid sounds will always have a place in my production arsenal.

7. I like bleepy stuff. So there.

2 through 6, 8 through 10: Yeah, pretty much.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Feb-11-2008 09:30:

Funnily enough, when I first opened this thread I thought that it was an old topic resurrected by somebody.

Talk about cliches...LOL.

Posted by Subtle on Feb-12-2008 00:48:

I agree with everything, except the 303.

Everyone knows the 303 sound is overused, therefore nobody uses it.. which makes it less of an cliche afterall.

No,no,no.. If you like a genre, you WANT to listen to it, and u certainly dont want it polluded.

Anyone has the right to criticise things as entertainment, art etc. without having to do better themselves.

I think its about freeking time someone said it. 90% of whats coming out now is recycled bullshit, that will be forgotten in 3 months.

Posted by zodiac9 on Feb-12-2008 01:05:

A really useless post that could of been worthwhile if presented in the right way. I've seen these kind of posts on other forums before, they almost always come off bad. Most of the time the poster has no point, as with this post. It's more a self indulgent rant than anything. The way this one is worded doesn't even invite a discussion, it's presented as fact, and closed for discussion. I never understand why a person comes to a discussion board to not have a discussion, LOL!

I've written certain things off as cliches before, but then I will hear then used in a certain song, maybe with a twist, and it works. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean others won't like it.

Posted by kitphillips on Feb-12-2008 02:08:

Although I agree that a lot of trance coming out at the moment is boring and cliched, I don't really think that giving people a list of things they CAN'T do is really a productive way to encourage experimentation. And most of your points are rubbish

Posted by derail on Feb-12-2008 02:13:

Hmm. One thing that really bugs me, which I've only noticed recently, is that most trance tunes have kick drums in them. What's more, most of the time they're playing a steady 4/4 beat. Seriously, check out some of your favourite trance tunes, a lot of them have this cliche throughout most of the tune!

Whenever that kick comes in, I'm always like clap-clap "yayyy, way to be original, mr producer man" clap-clap-clap.
