im rich, ******* !!!!!!!!
i got a call from a major publishing house today, they bought 3 of my short stories and they offered me a book deal !! i should get a contract in the next 24 hours and before i do anything about it i have a couple of questions so im wondering does anybody here have any experience in dealing with these people
1. should i hire PR and try doing it all by myself? i did some research and it looks like they will offer me standard, one season deal and after that i may have option to buy back rights to my book. this bugs me a lot, i dont want them to rape my creation but at the same time i feel like i need to do this, just to get my name out there.
2. they asked me to make some changes to those 3 stories and thats ok, no big deal, plenty more where that came from. but i really dont wanna be too flexible when it comes to the book, what are your thoughts on that?
3. and this is the most important question. i already have the name of the book, always did. its a tribute to charles bukowski, one of the greatest writers/poets/drunks ever. the problem is, title of my books is the title of one of his books. now, i'd make it perfectly clear why would the title be the same but at the same time i fell iffy about it. what would you do?
lol, who would've guessed.
p.s. miss pie, remember them stories that you liked so much???? guess what???? LOOOOOL
Congrats!
Aren't there agents that you can consult for advice?
yeah. i just fond out like 2 hours ago and i just wanna hear what other people think about it. also i wanna see if anybody has any experience with it.
ill talk to somebody professional soon, but first i gotta party lol

Don't give him any advice! The bastard is rich now!
OK I know EXACTLY what you need to do.. down to the second.. but my advice is expensive...
LOL
get an agent and/or a lawyer familiar with the industry.
if the pub. house won't deal with them, only you, that will tell you that they do plan on raping you
congrats!
I think this means that you should celebrate at Circa w/Robb G tomorrow and buy everyone drinks.
talk to a lawyer, then get a referral to a PR, I have a friend who owns a PR firm in the city, its smaller but deals with celebs, film makers etc from around the world pm me if you want me to pass on the contact
Get an agent and let them deal with it.
Experts are experts for a reason.

| I wouldn't rip off the title; but maybe one of the chapter titles if it fits? |
PS
Unless you're getting an up-front money deal, most of the money you make will be back-ended (total sales - costs = $ to you) which makes it hard to be wealthy via book publishing deals. 1 in 50 books makes money for the publishers (and likewise for the author).
With short stories for inclusion on the other hand one can make some money, but unless your an established writer, becoming "rich" is probably relative - none the less freelance can be a great income stream.
Congratulations on the recognition, however.

Congrats man!
I would also suggest getting an agent to do all that stuff for you. I tried doing it on my own several years back and i got screwed, granted its a different industry. My agent now takes care of all the details, lets me focus on my work instead.
Congrats to you!

He doesnt find out until a cricket tells him later on in the story. For now all he knows is that she went to go visit her sisters in lake placid.
