Victorian Premier John Brumby is expected to announce that drinkers will be banned from entering Melbourne city bars, pubs and clubs after 2am.
Friday's announcement will be the latest in a series of moves to combat binge drinking and alcohol-fuelled violence in inner-Melbourne.
The state government will order more than 500 late-night licence holders to impose the curfew in a three-month trial to stop pub crawls that lead to violence, News Ltd reported on Friday.
Publicans who fail to enforce the policy in four inner-city councils will be hit with fines of up to $6,800.
The newspaper said smokers who left drinking establishments after 2am to light up on the streets would be banned from returning.
A government taskforce is believed to be responding to calls from police to clamp down on gangs of young drunks moving from pub to pub and causing problems.
The main targets are the city nightclub precincts but will cover four local government areas of Melbourne, Yarra, Stonnington and Port Phillip councils.
yeah, im not a fan of the idea either. you'll find there's a lot of hassle in the first few weeks as people become informed too. i cant see that its made any difference to hobart at all, asides from everyone scrambling to get in before 3.
in somewhere the size of melbourne all i can envisage is a helluva lot of people wandering around post 2am with nothing to do.
lock drunken hooligans out on the streets after 2am to ensure more violence and crime!

how about they actaully hunt the gangs that are causing the problems and lock them up.... i would think that might be a little easier yeah??

lol so that means the poor dj who plays a closing set for the night, has to rock up around 4 hours in advance at least
brumby gets to pocket more money through the casino (which isnt affected afaik) to spend on god knows what, when the real issue is the lack of police

Am I the only one who thinks that locking people out simultaneously at the peak of the night when public transport is down is incredibly counterproductive.
Drunk guy gets locked out of his venue, drunk guy gets riled up and angry because his night is over, what do you think he does? He wanders the streets trying to keep himself entertained and starting trouble.

I reckon they should close all clubs once for all and there is no moo drunkennnes problems. While at it should import Taliban police from Afgahanistan with AK47s and wooden clubs in in their hands to bring some law and order to this lawless city. That'll show them drunk bastards.

QLD has had a 3am lockout for some time, most people are used to it but then again we have max 5am licences anyway... don't know how this will affect Brown Alley when it wants to stay open 'til 10am...
why would you either
A) get to a club after 2am
B) leave to go to another anyway
I think thats the decision making right there

Well I wasn't too fond of the idea of the price of alcopops (lol) being raised. Sure it's a little more expensive but I guess I could have adapted. Just get drunk of something else. But this is so stupid - people have already made the most obvious point. Locking people out will only get them annoyed and more likely to start trouble. Heh, looks like club nights are becoming more and more rare.. back to house parties.
house parties suck, I got enough of those in highschool. I say we go back to illegal bush doofs and warehouse raves. We can distribute maps and play hide and seek with the cops, it'll be like 1992 all over again!
