Legislation on Cellphones

'Liberal MP proposes legislation to rein in misleading cellphone charges'

Liberal MP David McGuinty says Canada's cellphone industry has collected billions of dollars in "misleading" charges over the last 25 years, and he's proposing legislation to stop it.

McGuinty says 911, overage, data and roaming surcharges can double advertised monthly rates for an industry that's turning a $4-billion-a-year profit.

He says cellphone companies double-bill, change contract terms on the fly, and obfuscate agreements with unnecessary words and vague clauses.

He says Canadian cellphone users are paying an average of 33 per cent more than users of equivalent services in the United States, while high-end business users average 56 per cent more.

Only 55 per cent of Canadians have cellphones, compared with 75 per cent of Americans and 86 per cent of Germans, while the rate of cellphone use in Canada ranks 29th among 30 OECD countries.

McGuinty is proposing legislation, called the Get Connected Fairly Act, he says would end system access fees and impose more transparency on the cellphone industry.

If only it was the US. I've been ripped off for about $200-250 from them using pro-rata shit for my text messages.

Text messaging plans are relatively cheap. You might as well get one, and just watch your messages. I have been there though. $90 text message overage charges one month.

The only person ripping you off is yourself by not understanding the terms of your own cell phone contract.

I had a 5000 text message a month plan. It was the highest available at the time. The sent a little card saying they were now offering unlimited. So I called and got that. It was around the middle of the month and I had used about 3000. Well they divided up my allowance to about 2500 for that time period so I was charged another $50 right there.

Sorry, not buying it. If you actually understood what you were doing, you wouldn't have had a problem, and even if you did have a problem, yet were capable of grasping the disparity between the contract you signed, and the amount the phone company "cheated" you for, you'd have been able to resolve it.

It tires me to no end to see people cry "fraud" or "I was cheated" solely because they don't know what they're getting themselves into. It's a fucking business, what do you expect?

Ignorance is no excuse.

That sounds like a crock of shit. I would have contested that for sure. They pro-rate the rate charge, not the service. Who do you have? Verizon? Sprint?

And the contract you signed as well, in full.

Do you seriously believe the shit you're spewing?

If you do, then you should be taking this up with them and not trying to prove anything to us - if not, you know you fucked yourself.

Either way, it's money out of your pocket, and no one else's.

sounds like a classic Verizon billing story....

When I had them, they fucked up my bill 3 times.

Once I got charged for nights and weekends even though had unlimited nights and weekends.

Twice, they signed me up for services I never agreed to.

fuck them. I'm so glad I don't have them as my cell phone provider anymore.

Did you get your bills reversed? Sorted out?

Was the first place you went to the internet to complain about how you were cheated, or did you understand how and why they fucked up and got it resolved?

Oh, I don't have the contract laying around.

I don't get why they would divide your text message plan?

Explain?

If you upgrade.. you upgrade. Plain and simple.

On that note.. My dad had my number when I was 14 and gave it to me when I was 15. I have had the same number ever since and transferred it under my name once I was 18. I love VoiceStream/TMobile.

That was years ago. I got it sorted out and got refunds right away, except for getting charged nights and weekends. I had to hound them to fix it right away, which I eventually did. I switched to AT&T in late 2005 and I've been happy since.

Yeah, I think my mom gets screwed over, too. I keep telling her to go over her bill with a fine tooth comb but she doesnt. She too trusting that they wouldnt mess it up, even if its not on purpose.

Probably referring to me. I've sent verizon 2 letters to their customer service department 3 weeks ago, and I haven't received a response.

I switched to unlimited on the 18th. They pro-rated my allowance for the beginning of the month to that time to 2500 messages. I had used 3370, so $87 charge for upgrading. If I knew that would've happened I wouldn't have upgraded till the beginning of the next month.

Posting a cell phone bill that a company fucked up hardly proves anyone was cheated of anything - I'd be willing to bet that regardless of their service, nearly every single person on this forum with a cell phone has had a bill come to them that was completely fucked.

The difference is that when people understand how and why their bill is a mess, they have a tendency to actually go to the company, point out the error (and how it conflicts with their terms of service), and have the bill fixed.

Surely that's a much better tact than just claiming to have been wronged and doing nothing about it. Well, nothing worthwhile anyway.
