Question mouse or rat? also with an additional question...

first and foremost is this a rat or a mouse? i wanna say rat but ive never really understood the difference...

and secondly heres the question...

so our cat came crawling into the backyard (shes an indoor/outdoor cat) with this little mouse/rat in its mouth, but the poor thing was still alive. well kinda. anyway... its got a broken leg but is drinking water and eating a little bit of cheese. i feel bad for it. i mean, its kinda disgusting and i wouldnt dare touch it, but its still a living thing and i feel bad for it.

i dunno if we should keep it outside with water and some cheese and bread and stuff until it gets better (if it even does) or just put it out of its misery... what would you do? i dont like the idea of killing it, and i dunno if i could even do it, but i hate the idea of it being in pain even more.

its like if i ran over a deer and there was nothing we do for it, then id shoot it to put it out of its misery.

That's a mouse. Rats are way bigger, longer faces and bodies with shorter legs.

If it has a broken leg I don't think it's just going to "get better". Take it to a vet or something if you're worried about it.

yea i dont think its just going to "get better" either... but then again im not gonna take it to vet either. thats a little too much.

I say rat.

Let it back into the wild. If you change its environment, it'll do more harm than anything else.

I also vote rat, based on that giant tail. Mice tend to have shorter/smaller tails, if I'm not mistaken.

According to the vast wasteland of inaccurate ramblings known as wikipedia, a rat is distinguished from a mouse by it's size; typically having a body longer than 5 in.

Just kill it and make a deadmau... oh nevermind...

If you want to kill it, I only see two viable options for you and they are as follows:

1.) Tie it to a stick and lay it down in the middle of the street. Think of this as a cartoon-style scene where you've tied your prey to the traintracks, and gun your car towards him.
Pros: Quick and relatively painless if you drive fast enough.
Cons: You get to see his sad eyes stare at you as you drive forward, and if you don't aim just right you'll turn around and see him twitching. Because I have some semblance of a soul, this is why I opt for number two.

2.) Do you have a shoebox or something similar? If you don't know how to construct a sparkler bomb, then Google it. After constructing said device, place the mouse in the box along with your brand spanking new Holy Hand Grenade, with the fuse hanging out. Duct tape the lid of the box. Light the fuse, run like hell.
Pros: Quick, painless, fucking awesome explosion.
Cons: Fuck off, the explosion will be awesome.

You idiots, that's a mouse. Make him your pet, Pat. You've already fucked him up enough by taking him out of his natural habitat. He has it made, is spoiled and will never make it if you put him back outside. Is that even a little pillow in the corner? He's yours now, so name him. He shall be called Pony.

Ok, Turtle. I think he's kinda cute. Just bathe him, Pat, and you're good to go.

if im not willing to touch the thing then what the hell makes you think ima keep it?

and no its not a little pillow... its just something so he wouldnt fall out of the bike basket.

How horribly incorrect. That's like calling a turtle a frog

also helpful:

quote:
Do rats eat the mice they kill?

Karli (1956) found that all mouse-killing rats (wild or domestic) consumed part of the mice they killed. Specifically, out of 683 mice killed by rats, after 7 hours 25% of the mice had been entirely eviscerated (brain, thoracic and abdominal viscera), 67% had been partially eviscerated, and only 8% had not been eaten.

Wild rats tended to start eating at the spot where they had bitten the mouse, which is usually the neck. They gradually opened the thorax and consumed the thoracic viscera, then proceeded to the liver. In contrast, domestic rats went right to the brain, opening the skull and consuming all or part of the brain, no matter what killing method had been used (Karli 1956).

why would you feel bad for the mouse?

feel bad for your cat that it now has to starve because it didn't get its daily serving of mice.

Break his other leg. Life is all about balance.

we had rat problems in my house back when i was very little (before i was 6) and my dad would catch them and put them in a bag and put the bag in the exhaust pipe of the car and wait for them to die....

so cruel but what else was he supposed to do with them? he tried drowning them but they suffered way more.
