The Shapeshifters - Chime

&
The Shapeshifters - Chime (Martin Ten Velden Remix)

when will the carnage end?

is nothing sacred?

Posted by distant on Jul-14-2008 06:12:

seriously?

Posted by nefardec on Jul-14-2008 06:21:

OOOOOOHHHHHH YEAHHHHHH

The artwork in that video is downright disturbing.

I understand what Shapeshifters has done is shit, but am I the only person with no respect for Orbital?

I bought a few of their albums and their music just does nothing at all for me.

They've been hailed as visionaries, but I see nothing amazing or forward thinking in their records compared to their contemporaries.

Orbital are legendary, listen to Belfast and Funny Break....

Nothing is sacred anymore it seems :-(

Orbital have made some of the greatest electronic music ever, period.

Dreadful..

Posted by Fundamental on Jul-14-2008 11:46:

I guessing the lack of acnowledgement to Orbital in the title means this mas made with their blessing?

Posted by mphreak on Jul-14-2008 12:05:

It is sad.

They should go to jail. Fucking idiots.

Posted by Gauss on Jul-14-2008 14:54:

I'm not even going to bother with this one.

It's hardly great, but at least it sounds somewhat different. Well, not different to the original Chime, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, Chime had already been "raped" by Joey Beltram in a fucking awesome track.

Posted by bas on Jul-14-2008 15:11:

I remember when this got released. I saw the title and thought, "You have GOT to be kidding...this can't be CHIME chime". Sure enough

Yes, you are.

And this is the worst of the lot. If one act's idiosyncratic and genius work should be respected even by the lowest of trend-whoring piggy-backing talentless remix wankers, it should be Orbital's.

Posted by GrimReaper on Jul-14-2008 16:20:

Whatta..?!

This is one of the most uninspiring versions of Chime i've ever heard and i think i've heard every damn version out there.

This thread just reminded me how sad hard drive crashes are.

And yes, these are absolutely wretched.

Personally a lot of their music doesn't do it for me, but they do have some tracks I absolutely love, like Halcyon +on +on and belfast

me too, my fav is One Perfect Sunrise

Meh, I have Chime, Belfast, Halcyon and all their other big hits on CD, as well as some their less popular stuff like Oi, but I still don't see what all the fuss is about.

I find their melodies very bland and overly repetitive, and the production values amateurish, even for the early 90's. Their tinny percussion annoys me especially.

See, something like Choice - Acid Eiffel was made at a similar time, most likely using similar hardware and methods, and to my ears, it's infinitely better than anything from Orbital. Better melodies, higher production values.

Or perhaps Melt - Be Liquid (1993), same boat. Better production values, better melodies, better percussion.

Orbital had some fantastic stuff. Can't comment on their first two albums, but Snivilisation and In Sides are superb from start to finish. After In Sides they kinda dissolved and slowed down on The Middle Of Nowhere and The Altogether, which doesn't sound so inspired to me. Blue Album was again superb, not so focused as In Sides, but every track had something special and after listening to it you just had to feel sorry for their breakup.

BTW, judging Orbital by their early rave stuff is not that great idea. They are much more than that...
