The New Yorker cover of Obama

![]() Obama camp: Satirical magazine cover 'tasteless' (07-14) 14:56 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Barack Obama's campaign says a satirical New Yorker magazine cover showing the Democratic presidential candidate dressed as a Muslim and his wife as a terrorist is "tasteless and offensive." The illustration on the issue that hits newsstands Monday, titled "The Politics of Fear" and drawn by Barry Blitt, depicts Barack Obama wearing sandals, robe and a turban and his wife, Michelle, dressed in camouflage, combat boots and an assault rifle strapped over her shoulder standing in the Oval Office. The couple is doing a fist tap in front of a fireplace in which an American flag is burning. Over the mantel hangs a portrait of Osama bin Laden. "The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton. "But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree." In a statement Monday, the magazine said the cover "combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are." "The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall? All of them echo one attack or another. Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and the absurd. And that's the spirit of this cover," the New Yorker statement said. The statement also pointed to the two articles on Obama contained inside the magazine, calling them "very serious." In Arizona, Republican John McCain said the cover was "totally inappropriate and frankly I understand if Senator Obama and his supporters would find it offensive." Already the cover was generating controversy on the Internet. The Huffington Post, a left-leaning blog, said: "Anyone who's tried to paint Obama as a Muslim, anyone who's tried to portray Michelle as angry or a secret revolutionary out to get Whitey, anyone who has questioned their patriotism well, here's your image." http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/artic.../p053455D90.DTL |

This cover was ill-advised. Not because of the image itself, of course, but for the assumption by the New Yorker that most Americans would be able to appreciate this sort of relatively extreme satire. Most Americans, it seems, are only able to take things at face value. |
I think this is getting blown way out of proportion.
First of all 99% of America doesn't read the New Yorker, and since it is a weekly the total time it will be seen in news stands will be minimal.
It's also a fantastic piece of satire.
The two articles on Obama in the issue are great pieces as well.
No joke... grow a set of balls, Barry. Welcome to public life. No politician is spared from the political cartoonists and caricaturists.
Not sure if you understand the image, but it is not making fun of Obama.
Yeah I totally get the satire... that it's aimed to make fun of the extreme right wing's evolving image of the Obamas. I'm just tired of all the condemning of anything and everything by politicians that is "offensive"
I'm pretty sure Obama has the balls to take a lot of criticism, he just has to condemn the piece for the purpose of being in a presidential campaign, much like the McCain camp did.
Why did he have to condemn it... it was his friends on the left that put it out there to blast the GOP. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. If I had a dime for every time he demanded an apology or was outraged/offended over something, I'd be rich. He doesn't even have the nutsack to take McCain up on his offers to debate in front of military groups (after he said he'd debate McCain anywhere, anytime on Iraq policy), and agreed to only 1 town hall format debate out of the 10 that were offered, and wanted it televised on July 4th when nobody would be watching.
This is sure to increase readership at the New Yorker.

the military group was just one... but the point was that Obama specifically challenged McCain anytime, anywhere for a debate on Iraq policy in May. So, at Fort Hood they invited both to come debate that policy in front of everyone and now Obama won't go. He is afraid to have extemporaneous exchanges with someone on an issue he's inexperienced in, obviously... which is why he never should have issued that challenge to begin with. I actually think the crowd would probably be more sympathetic to Obama than some might think because military families have gone through a lot over the last five years and want to see the Iraq war come to some sort of conclusion.
The other 10 town hall deals were aimed at being in just regular towns across the country... no specific demographic targeted.
And Obama asked to do four debates and McCain said no... what's the big deal? The fact is that both candidates suggested making more joint appearances than in any other race in modern history.
I got the Satire.... pretty funny.....
like this one......
