Usain Bolt

Already discussed in the other thread, but this guy is seriously a freak of nature; he has to be the best athlete in generations.

I come from a strong athletic background and was a good middle distance runner myself; I've watched hundreds of sprint races at any number of levels from young amateurs to the Olympics, both in person and on television, and I have never, ever, ever, seen anyone win so easily in a 100 or 200 race, which are usually so short that any distance gained is minute and any significant slowing down will see you swamped by the field.

His 200m heat performance was supernatural, far more so than his 100m; he literally jogged from 80m out; almost half the race.

If you look at the other competitors, their arms were pumping hard and in straight lines perpendicular to the body, with knees high and relatively small amount of heel flick, which is characteristic of sprinting. In the last 80m Bolt was completely relaxed, with arms running more so at a 45 degree angle to the body, slowly swinging, a low knee lift and a huge amount of heel flick; he looked more like an 800 or 1500m runner would look in the first lap of their race.

Unbelievable.

This guy is going to smash records in the next five years, and not by .05 of a second. I think it's entirely possible he could be the first man to break 19 seconds for the 200.

I'd be interested to see him against America's Jeremy Wariner, a Texan who is currently unbeatable over 400m, holds the third fastest time ever and who claimed in a press interview I saw him at here in Australia that he thinks he can run a sub 42 second lap, which is pure crazy talk.

Drugs.

I hope not but these days you never know...Sadly

I'd love to see him not slow down though, to see how good he could be flat out over the distances.

Posted by elFreak on Aug-18-2008 13:43:

He is the smoothest, most fluid runner that i have ever seen.
White power.

It's better for them (like Powell & him did during the Jamaican selections) to slow down, because the risks of getting severely injured are among the highest in athleticism.

Posted by elFreak on Aug-18-2008 13:46:

Or they just fake it so they have an excuse like when Donovan Bailey gave the boot to Michael Johnson.

oh yeah, i don't doubt that due to the sheer pressures what are being put on everything from muscles to bones, but it would be cool to calculate just how fast they could really go, for example if he could break 9.50 in the 100m it'd be something that got remembered forever, but there is always the chance someone will shave a couple more hundredths off what he set in the final this time.

If he finished his 100m with +2m/sec (0/sec for the final), he could have easily run under 9.50...

If you see pictures of Bolt from three years ago he is a tall skinny kid...now he is a tall muscle man....hmmmm....he must have a good gym in his hut.

Sadly enough, it's quite likely.

One of the most obvious signs of drug usage is an athete "coming from no-where" with a dramatic improvement in times, which Bolt seems to have done.

I hope not though, Marion Jones' had a bad enough impact on the sport, I don't want to see such a noble pursuit gain a bad reputation the way cycling has.

drugs.

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Aug-18-2008 18:41:

I would guess that all 8 of the 100m finalists were on some sort of drug to improve performance.

I say drug them all up....the olympics would be so much better if they just had everyone drugged out of their minds.....and to top it off....every athlete would have to do a hollywood line of blow before each event/round.

Fuck, I haven't seen the 200m run yet. He's out of this world.

Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt!

guilty until proven innocent? i refuse to believe anyone is doping until we get proof. i am sure many are taking supplements of some kind, whether they are illegal is another matter. if bolt is cheating we will find out about it sooner or later and until then we should just celebrate the super human feats featured nightly during these olympic games.

the Jamaicans are on point with sprinting.

The US needs figure something out.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Aug-19-2008 01:20:

He's been tested seven times already since he's been there. I really hope he isn't on them, just for how special his performances have been.

I'm thinking that there's been some big break in masking or a new substance just in time for the games. Seems that a LOT more world records are being broken than normal. For example, even if you only count half of Phelps' races, there were still more swimming world records broken than in the previous two games combined.
