The Wine Thread

last time i tried it was 2 years ago, and honestly didn't like it

now, from 2 weeks till now, as a gift from a friend, i've been drinking a glass everyday and it feels so good

i'm a total newbie at this so i want to know the rules, advices and recomendations about it

btw, i've been drinking casillero del diablo, from chile

if not with a meal...

red wine (Cabernet Franc) is delicious alongside red grapes and cheese (gruyere or grunlander)

I recommend and sell it for a living but I only really have experience with Australian wine.

Just go with what you like but remember that as your palate develops chances are that the wine you like will, most people start out only liking softer styles but after a few years drinking prefer the heavier more structured wines as the softer styles sometimes come across as lacking something or being too soft.

Just find some wine similar to the one your liking to try, ask at your local bottle shop or Google it, remember to only leave a bottle open for three days, if its not finished by then in most cases it won't be much good and just enjoy what your drinking.

I prefer the sweeter, dessert or ice wines.

Wine is really subject to taste.

Higher price doesn't necessarily mean better taste once you get above say $4 a bottle. Anything around that region or less and it is probably so full of shitty fillers that there isn't going to be much grape. Yes, that includes 'Two Buck Shite'. I had a bottle of the Merlot and it was foul, even my wife who does tend to drink Two Buck Swill said it was more foul than usual and poured it out. I'm not going to buy something with such inconsistent flavour that you don't know what you are getting.

But if it is only $2, how can you complain!? Ain't like you spent $40 and it tasted like the $2 wine.

Casillero is very nice..... for the price, you cant lose. try maybe a marquez de cazeres.... 2003 is the best imo.

I watched this after i started to get into wine and i loved it.







We get some really good home made wine at home but if im buying it in a store i will spend between 10 to 15 eur per bottle.

Riesling is my favorite. Drink about 1 glass a night.

i'm quite partial to zins for the most part, sauvignon blancs if i'm going for a white

edit: people new to wine, try barefoot's zin. its cheap as hell and really sweet and vanilla-flavored

i took a wine tasting class at LSU...it was awesome. i'm a big fan of the fruitier reds, like merlot or blancs.

but i'm still very partial to pinot gregio as well.

oh, and Landry Winefields here in Louisiana have blueberry wine as well - hot shit!

recent wines i have enjoyed.

Saltram Mamre Brooke Shiraz (Australia)

not only is this good to drink but is really nice to braise with. (esp lamb). Has a bit of a chocolate hint to it.About 25$ CDN a bottle.


Ovilos Ktima Biblia Chora vin de pays de pangee 2006 (white wine/Greece)
Citrus hints to it and is really paired well with salmon poached in sweetened grapefruit juice. (What i tried it with) About 25$ CDN a bottle.


Pinot noir Belle Vall�e Willamette Valley Or�gon 2006 (USA)
A good dry wine, that is great with tomato dishes. It has a nice "burnt" taste and cleans the mouth well. About 30$ a bottle.


'Inu Riserva Contini Cannonau di Sardegna 2003 (Italy/Red)
I have it lying around and am considering opening it tonight to watch the hockey game with some fresh smoked buffalo mozzarella. I have not had it yet so i am looking forward to seeing how it fits with one of my favorite cheeses. I think it is around 40 a bottle but i didn't pay for it. God bless people who do not drink being polite enough to not show up to dinner parties empty handed.

Not wine but:

Ace De Lavoie cidre de glace (Canada)

Ice Cider is pretty awesome stuff. This is a local one and is so pwn with anything that has blue cheese in it. The process of making ice cider (press from frozen) makes it sweeter than traditional ciders. It is a bit pricey at 20$ for 375ml, but i highly suggest it for those with a sweet tooth.

I love wine, i just hate always having purple teeth and lips lol.

What.the.hell. That doesn't make sense. You give your guests/clients the diverse selection of either 1) grapefruit or 2) prunes & tobacco.

But really, I agree w/ Shini. Just enjoy it, it's fucking grape juice (whether it's a $200 bottle in a dixie cup or your palate soaks for Piesporter) Don't let the enthusiasts get to you.

What's truly fun is food pairing, knowing what certain vinos can accentuate food. I swear to god I didn't know the taste of a tomato until it was paired with Chilean Malbec.

I got a bottle of Aguardente when I was in Portugal last week, it's to port what grappa is to wine (liquor made from the grape residue after port c.q. wine has been distilled from it). Can't wait to see what it tastes like. I must say I went for the somewhat cheaper bottle, because I have no clue as to its taste. I do like grappa though, so it shouldn't be too bad, hopefully.

Haven't really been drinking wine lately, but with winter / holidays coming up, you bet I'm going to get me a nice bottle (or five).

its nearly summer time here... nothing beats a good glass of white
i tend to drink more sweeter wines during summer
moscato and lexia FTW

but my usual choice is crouchen & riesling
$10 a bottle, you cant really go wrong


Also like the sparkling wines in summer aswell
they have just put out a rose version of zibibbo, still yet to try it, will do so this weekend i imagine
