As you can see most of these tracks are old / commercialish / hammered to death by now, but this was just something some friends of mine who don't listen to edm requested for their rides home for the holidays.

Anyways, mixings not perfect, flow really isn't either, but I tried my best. I haven't been mixing for long so I'm basically just looking for some feedback and suggestions to get me going in the right direction. And yeah, I shamelessly ended with the Engineers track from Invol2ver, just really like that tune as a closer. Enjoy if you choose to.

Giving this a shot

Posted by enydo on Dec-03-2008 00:22:

Thanks man, hope you find it somewhat enjoyable. I feel like some of my mixes are really painful, but I just really need some outside opinions from people who know what they're talking about.

Yeah, it helps a lot to hear feedback from people. And there's a lot of talent around this section on TA from whom you can learn a lot from.

Oh, you. You. Yeah, I'll partake.

Hehe, thanks Adam(s). Be forewarned, the section around Dinosaur Adventure gets pretty heavy.

Posted by elFreak on Dec-03-2008 21:22:

i will try and be brutal.

ableton?

Posted by enydo on Dec-03-2008 21:23:

Yeah, Ableton and a mouse + keyboard shortcuts for now. Once this semesters over my job starts up again so hopefully I get some funds for equipment, this is definitely not what I want to be playing on.

I'm betting this is not up your alley at all, so I'm expecting rape.

Posted by elFreak on Dec-03-2008 21:30:

i already know the music will not be my cup of tea, but if you want feedback on the mixing i'll bite the bullet

your first mixes are supposed to sound brutal no matter who you are, so i have it in my mind and understand this

Suffer well I suppose, thanks though that's pretty much what I wanted.

Jay gives very good and thorough reviews. even if you suck, he points out what you can work on. so its kind of like rape, but with a reach-around...and with lube. i always appreciate them vs just a regular "this shit sucks".

Posted by Ted Promo on Dec-04-2008 03:35:

Pretty good for a first set. The flow was a bit off for me even if you stated it was going to be. Can't argue too much since it has one of my favorite tracks ever (A Break in the Clouds).

Did you actually get a set of decks finally?

Posted by enydo on Dec-04-2008 03:40:

No, Ableton, laptop, mouse and keyboard... for now.

Thanks for taking a listen man, you gonna be down here for Kompressed on Friday?

Hahah.

My first ableton mixes were the biggest piles of turd ever recorded.

I do believe someday I'll be saying something similar.

You got the right attitude, so most likely, yes.

The transition from music listener to DJ is not quick.

Going to finally toss this on tonight (errrr, umm - today) when I decide to sit down with a book prior to crashing out.

Looks like a winrar to me.

Just loaded it into my iPod and will listen to it on the drive home

Posted by enydo on Dec-05-2008 01:50:

Man, thanks so much guys, I wasn't expecting a response at all. Very much appreciated.

Posted by elFreak on Dec-05-2008 14:15:

For a first mix this was good. I only have had the chance to listen to it on laptop speakers so i won't go too much into depth. Try mixing out earlier, the first track lasted until past 10 minutes . It is just my opinion, but a long drawn out beginning of mix makes people lose interest. Also get a midi controller, they can be cheap and you will have way more control over your mixes. Play every day and practice quick mixes, it will help with learning flow (like try playing 10 tracks in 20 minutes, no one will hear it but you don't worry too much what it sounds like at first). I know you are using ableton, but no beatmatching to learn means you should push yourself harder to learn how to eq and not just mix intros.

i hope this makes sense, wake n bake.

i look forward to seeing how you improve

Yeah, makes a lot of sense. Thanks a lot for taking the time man, really appreciate it. I'm actually planning on picking up a midi controller of some sort around christmas.

Again, thanks a lot, and wake n bake right back at ya.

OK, I listened to the first 15 minutes on my ride home last night listened to the whole thing again this morning. I think it was very good for a first effort. Although I agree with this right here:

I thought the beginning was specially good, while the first track might have dragged for too long, it didn't make me lose interest at all and the transition into the next track was very well done.

Regarding the flow of your set, I thought it was good for the most part. I thought the placement of 'Beautiful Strange' was a bit weird coming right after such a melodic prog track like 'A Break in the Clouds'. I see the direction you began to take with that track and then with 'Dinosaur Adventure 3D' after that, it's just that the change seemed a bit abrupt, if you know what I mean

I really enjoyed how you keep it bangin' it with some nice dark prog tracks and then you begin to slow things down with 'Little Bullet', (it reminds me of Xpander a bit) to set up your finale with the Engineers track. I love that track, among the few highlights on Invol2ver and works wonders as a closer.

This was a very solid first effort mate, keep 'em coming!
