14. Peter Dildo - Take My Hand (Original Mix) [Trackdown, 2005]

So this is the first time I've ever tried my hand at putting a "tribute" mix together, so I'm a bit uncertain as to how well this will be received and if I was capable of finding the balance between old and new and create a coherent set of material from a single artists back catalog.

Obviously by now you know my choice has been Andr Schmid, better known as Rozzo, Mountain People, One in a Billion, and Peter Dildo. Andr has consistently produced some of the best records I've been fortunate enough to play the past few years, and has been doing so since the early nineties. Heavy influences from the worlds of French house and techno, as well as the ability to produce a very wide range of sounds, have kept at least a Rozzo tune or two in my bag as long as I've been playing house. My only hope is that the love I had going into doing this mix is apparent, and that it's a worthy tribute to a man who is the epitome of producing quality over quantity.

The first half is very, very deep, and the second is relatively melodic and banging - I have a feeling there may be a fair number of people who like either half but aren't sure of the whole thing, but my aim was to try and capture the diversity of the mans productions over the last 15 or so years, so I hope when all is said and done at least a few folks will think I've managed to succeed in my aim.

Enjoi.

Now that you posted it I can tell you that my guess was Funk D'Void

Really interested to see what you did here. This right here might be up on my list of favorite tracks of all time:

09. Rozzo - Blue (Original Mix) [Trackdown, 2003]

looks like fun. Rozzo has been hit and miss for me, but maybe you selected all the right ones.

Posted by RJT on Jan-09-2009 16:18:

To be honest, I almost don't expect this mix to have much of a broad appeal, especially if you're not into Rozzo - but perhaps even if you are, because there's a pretty broad range of the kind of stuff he's produced in here, and I'd imagine it's not all that likely that anyone else has the exact same taste in tunes from a single producer as I.

i thought for sure it would have been Lars... but i'm glad it wasn't.

will check it out.

I think it's awesome that basically everyone thought I'd go straight to Francois D'Void Sandberg for a project like this.

And I definitely understand why you all did... but I'm glad it appears not necessarily too predictable.

Now I just need 11 to get here so I can finally get some sleep and try to figure out what to do with the weekend... I realized it was Friday for the first time about an hour ago.

yeah i remember when we'd tag a few years ago if one of us dropped one, the other would invariably play the other one out of it

Yeah, I've pulled that maneuver a time or two as well.

That remix of Sasse is such a fucking bomb!

Posted by RJT on Jan-10-2009 04:40:

Just to throw this out there - I certainly don't expect each of you who takes the time to listen to this to give some sort of long winded review, but if you've taken the time to listen to it and can even think of a single area where I either failed or did well, I'd appreciate the feedback.

Tribute mixes are somewhat daunting (at least in my eyes) because while it's plenty easy to just throw a bunch of tracks together and call it a "tribute", actually taking tunes from a single artists library and creating a cohesive and well formed set is a whole other story.

Posted by Clovis on Jan-10-2009 05:04:

I know pretty much all the tunes so I'm basically just gonna listen to checkout the mixing and stuff.

Posted by denys envy on Jan-10-2009 05:23:

expect one from me sometime tomorrow.

i think it's pretty much the same with any dj set

lots of mixes to work my way through!

Ok so I'm not really familiar with Rozzo but I'm guessing that Peter Dildo is one of his aliases, as well as Mountain People with somebody else. I'm downloading it now because I've recently come across a few of his tracks and I liked them, and I've heard so of the Peter Dildo remixes and thought they were good, especially the remix of Plasma. And I thought the last Mountain People release was quite solid and I actually grabbed one of the tracks on it and put it in a mix. I'll get back to this thread once I've had a listen.

Well I hope those of you who manage to get into this at some point enjoy it.

I should say, however, that there are two transitions on here that I'm a little self-conscious about, namely the first (into Meta001.2) and the mix into "Mountain 006.3."

The first was just difficult for me to get that synth to drop right where I wanted it to - I still think it works and is close to on phrase, and honestly didn't put a ton of effort into doing it too differently.

"Mountain006.3" is another story entirely - I must have done that mix about 30 different ways, trying to figure out any decent way to get that eerie pad noise to come in without being abrasive or sounding like shit, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get it to be perfect. I think the mix works overall after the first couple of beats, but still, ramming the fader up and having those frequencies clash for even a second throws me off.

Regardless, I hope they're tolerable slip-ups and don't ruin anyone's overall enjoyment of the set.

The transition to Track # 2 was fine. I mean I get what you said, maybe you should have lowered the bass on the intro track as the bass on the second track was about to kick in but it was no biggie.

EDIT: So I thought it was pretty good overall, and I definitely enjoyed it. I think the tracks could have been arranged in a better order but there was nothing that necessarily threw the mix off for me. A few times I thought you should have cut the low end on the outgoing track as the bass kicked in from the incoming track, but nothing sounded unpleasant by any means.

Thanks Adam - much appreciated.

RE: Programming, I think that's probably the most difficult part of putting something like this together - figuring out how to arrange tracks from a single producers catalog (and one who isn't necessarily as massive as many others, though still large) is figuring a way to play them in a meaningful way. I tried to stick to the deep/techy stuff he's done the last couple of years early on, and get into the French house/techno stuff later on as it just seemed a natural progression to me.

RE: Low end in mixes. I've had my Xone for three years now, and I'm still ultra cautious with the low end curve. It's like there's this point you hit where you instantly remove a TON of audio from the track just by cutting the low, so lately I've been just using the low and mid-low somewhat in concert with one another, but still haven't really nailed it.

I think I went through and played this set beginning to end about 6 times in a 24 hours period before I was happy with it.

Rob you fail for not putting his remix of Plasma in there, one of his best tracks imo

Posted by RJT on Jan-11-2009 03:43:

These are my favorite Rozzo tunes.

Albeit I can readily admit there were a few I wish had made it in here but I just wasn't feeling in the context of this set.

Posted by RJT on Jan-11-2009 03:44:

Also, the section from 11-13 is dedicated to Bas.

I really enjoyed this. At first I thought I might not, sometimes tribute mixes bore the pants off me, but this one worked really well and kept me entertained throughout. Mixing was tight and the flow was pretty spot on. Nice work overall, I don't know anything about this guy really, but this was a good introduction to a lot of his work.

Cheers for sharing your thoughts with me. I was pretty concerned about this, actually, because I think that even though the aim of any set should be to put a coherent string of tunes together and mix them interestingly, I think when you add the restrictions of a single artists catalog and still want to represent a wide variety of sounds, that becomes a lot more difficult.

It was relatively easy to figure out there was going to be a deep house section to this mix, and a diva house section from the outset. Figuring out how to get from one to the other was a bit of a challenge.

Finally, and I'm not saying this to toot my own horn here, but my favorite segment of this mix is 11-13. I rarely get to play such banging, old school house these days - that was a real treat.
