Steve aoki (coachella)

I think he is the biggest crock of crap since George Bush.

Posted by dollaroff on Apr-21-2009 03:50:

You know, him and Perry Ferrell had huge crowds for their sets. Of course, popular doesn't mean good.

Perry BLEW too man

Quite often it means the inverse

last year while watching roger waters perform in surround sound a plane flew overhead with its entire wingspan in LED lights. It scrolled "STEVE AOKI PLAYING IN L.A. TOMORROW NIGHT!"

my perfect moment of pink floyd heaven was ruined.

hes not playing soulful, meaningful, deep music. what he is doing is simply rocking out. he is entertaining his crowd. I bet a majority of that crowd went home to tell their friends "Steve Aoki owneddd." And based on his performance he is building a following by using physical movements alongside the music to entertain his audience. you could practically say he is unique. he is adding a dynamic to a set that doesn't really exist in many DJ sets. Which makes him unique in a way and makes the old school EDM listener open their mouth like those politicians that say "my my my, such behavior will not be tolerated!" I think its funny and entertaining all around, both his behavior and the response he gets from people who don't get what he is doing, or why a crowd who goes out to be entertained might like his antics.

A DJ can do whatever the fuck they want on stage but if they play shit music I'm going to call a spade a spade...

Fair enough, he does play shit music to you and myself. To his crowds he probably plays as good as music as any DJ that we think plays good music. A DJ's purpose is also to entertain though, and if he can do that through his physical actions, it's just an extra dynamic towards his performance. I'd be bored if I went to a show and all I got was some good music to be honest. I want to see the DJ's personality as much as I want to hear the music, I think they go hand in hand.

I don't agree with him either, when you put in a cd you are not trying to see a dj jump @ you.

I asked his fans (Steve Aoki's) what they liked about him and they said only his entertainment. Music is supposed to be about what you hear not what you see.

How many times have you paid an azn guy to jump around in front of you ?

Wow, horrible mixing.

Never go to one of Digweed's gigs then. At the Mayan recently you hardly knew he was there. You saw him once every minute or two for a moment when a light passed by him at random. There was no personality to speak of, it was all about the music.

To each his own.

You can disagree, but as a DJ you run the risk of your crowd being bored during your sets, since you probably feel the music alone will entertain a crowd. Its a romantic view to have, and its an ideal view, but...you wont build much of a following having this view. Anyone can play music, anyone can have taste, anyone can put a set together, entertaining your crowd is simply an extra dynamic that some of the best DJs have, so why not seperate yourself from the average DJ by adding that extra dynamic?

One of the reasons why I enjoy Danny Howells and Carl Cox is because they have an entertaining personality while they play their sets, its not as flamboyant as Steve Aoki, but if that dynamic did not exist in their sets, I dont know if id enjoy them as much. Same goes for someone like Lee Burridge.

Well...everyone can play good music, if you download 20 sets from the 20 top DJ's, there is little dividing them that the average person will point out, especially with the days of digging not being the same it was, the likes of Beatport and people downloading and getting a hold of the same music. But if you go to their live show, what they do there might divide them from the others. Just an extra dynamic an entertaining DJ has. If Villalobos just stood there playing tunes, he probably would'nt have half the following he has, he'd look like a big dumb stick standing there playing records. He adds his paisely personality to his sets, which makes people come back for more. Think about it.

all good points and i see what your trying to say, but the DJ's you refer to are actually good DJ's. I'm all for an entertaining DJ (Eddie Halliwell), but at least make sure the DJ is a good DJ.

Steve Aoki, well... lets just say i wouldn't download his music for my listening pleasures.

Posted by bigperf on Apr-22-2009 01:04:

if steve aoki's next set was made up of armin van burens tracklist from his spundae party in SF , would he still get hated on? what if it was richie hawtins last playlist, or if he played ferry corstens track selection for his gig next month at vanguard? i think no matter what aoki does, all the haters will keep hating. i have seen a LOT of TA's at events for many "edm" dj's and these TA's arent dancing...i thought it was Electronic DANCE music for a reason. the people at coachella were dancing, and having a good time, whats wrong with that? As long as they were not being disrespectful or doing anything illegal, whats the problem?

Aoki is a mashup dj, so not sure why we even bother to talk about him on TA...Scotty boy is a mash up dj and i saw him last thursday while celebrating my birthday in Santa barbara, he had a LOT of people dancing, but he wasn't playing techno/trance/minimal, he was playing rock/house/hip hop mashups, which is what the crowd came to see.

EDIT

oops maybe at godskitchen scotty boy plays a different style than the boogie SF/SD clubs and vegas pool parties I have seen him at. Doubt that he would open up for luke with rock mashups...

if this is the case then it shows he is a versatile DJ which i think is a good thing! If he spins banda at quinceaeras then i'm voting him #1 DJ in America next year lol!
