Dj's that use laptops

Is it taking away the dj experience of mixing ? Theirs allot of dj's that don't use laptops Like AVB and Morillo and they still rock with no laptop !

Now in the days a monkey can be dj with a laptop and just push buttons

No.

i suppose i'll be the first to defend the laptop dj. i grew up using vinyl, then cd's, now serato w/ cdj's. i love it and if anything i think it's added to my abilities. you can search so fast, and save multiple cue point, loops, playlists, organize crates, sort files by color, year...anything instantly. using a midi controller w/ serato and the sample player adds to the fun. although all i just mentioned CAN be done with cd's or vinyl only...i love the portability and quickness with my macbook pro.

some dj's that attempt auto mixing and can't even use a cdj or 1200mk2 and have never gone through the other formats are more prone to criticism. however in a digital age i don't know if it's always entirely fair.

everyone is a dj now, that's the problem...and it's brutal to get gigs when dj douche is willing to trainwreck through sets for $50. i love my labtop, and i still think the best dj's do great work with laptops...and the worst would suck even if they were using cds.

loptop AND labtop?

for the love of god, people...it's not that hard!

Smiley DJ

Times - they are a changin - It shouldn't matter if you use a laptop, turntable, 8 track, or ipod... as long as you can beat match and keep the crowd moving and on their feet you are a good dj. The worst thing is progressive, not going anywhere, clear the floor, beats that just last and last and last..... is anyone hearing me out there!!!!! STop the progression! Keep the CRESCENDO!

I don't even know where to begin. Amazing.

I'm with you and took a very similar path (vinyl -> serato w/ vinyl -> serato w/ cdjs). I love the simplicity of just walking in with a set of CDs, however the cue points & loops, organization/sorting of tracks, and ability to visually see tracks enable me to make my mixes better than they ever were, even when i'm playing brand new tracks that i'm not that familiar with. I know the CDJ1000mk3 has a bit of a visual display but it still pales in comparison to what you can see in a Serato track overview, and I'm able to bring new tracks in just where I want them every single time.

Realistically, beatmatching is not that hard, especially on CDJs, and so a DJ should be judged on how he/she transitions between tracks and works the crowd, not on whether or not he has software auto-beatmatching for him etc. If anything I think software enables additional creativity.

And of course there's always the wonders of modern technology -- earlier this year someone requested a track from me at a house party; I was able to buy it on beatport, download it, and play it within 10 minutes of the request! Try that with vinyl!

I'll mix with CD's from time to time if I am in situation where doing so is less cumbersome than bringing my laptop, but I am a full convert to Traktor. I love it and I feel it has made me a smarter, more efficient DJ. I actually don't feel like I am doing less, but actually that I am more active and doing more. The consolidation of time from buying a track to playing it is simplified as well and I love that.

I have a whole storage room of vinyl that I go rummage through every now and again and I appreciate the sexiness of it, but I could never go back to that and I also don't miss the hours of burning and labeling CD's.

Newsflash:

Any monkey can beatmatch CDs just like Armin and Morillo.

The magic happens on the mixer. EQ'ing is where it's at.

I once went on stage when a well known (unnamed dj) was playing and he was outputting a continuous mix from iTunes - no live mixing involved. He was jumping around and banging on the keyboard like a maniac, putting on a real stage show, but it was a big hoax.

I went cold on laptop djs after that.

The same concept can be done with CDJs too

i should re-phrase, will vinyl ever return as the main focus of djing? or do you think its a done deal?

Don't you hate when that happens? It must happen to you every time you post.

It's never going to go back to being the main medium of DJs. But it's certainly not a "done deal".
