OPINION: Bathroom attendants in the clubs?

Ok, so my friend and I were talking about this over the weekend and I thought I would ask everyone's opinion on this. We were discussing the bathroom attendants that seem to be in most of the clubs these days and we had very different views on it.

He said he hates them, and hates to feel obligated to tip them for just handing over a piece of paper towel. He also said that becasue he never does tip them, that they tend to give him attitude if he's a regular.

I on the other hand don't really mind it at all. I also don't mind giving them a tip, although I don't do that everytime I enter the bathroom. I probably end up giving them $4-$5 a night which isn't bad, especially if I pick up a piece of gum or something from the stuff they lay out.

Now, I have heard from some female friends that they've had problems with the female attendants. Attitude and stuff like that mostly, but apparently it's gotten pretty ugly.

Anyway, your thoughts TA?

bathroom attendants in toronto are uber useless. They stand there all night and pass you a piece of paper. They dont even attend the bathrooms as they are filthy and nasty. Isnt that the point of them in the first place?

In Europe if and when they have the attendants they have a bucket and mop and the bathroom is clean. Sometimes paying is mandatory but at least you are getting what you pay for.

As for concessions, a vending machine would solve that.

Shocked to say I fully agree.

If all they do is give me a piece of paper (which sometimes I just reach for on my own), I don't tip them. They haven't really done anything for me.

If I'm going to use any of the stuff they've put out though, I tip them. It's only fair because it is the stuff that THEY have purchased, it's not just for people to take freely. That's how they make money. Just think, if they're working as a bathroom attendant, they likely need the money. So IMO, don't use their stuff if you don't plan on tipping them.

Personally, I've never had a problem with the bathroom attendants. All of them have either been quite pleasant or have said nothing at all.

If it's a classy club for the 25+ crowd and the bathrooms are elegant, then I don't mind. It's nice to have classy service if I come to a classy place.

Having them at the guv main room, and small clubs where the walls' plaster if falling apart or any club where the bathroom looks less modern or less clean than mine, it's a very annoying cash-grab.

There should be paper towels available to patrons as an option, and not hoarded by the attendants.

+1

Its just another way to make some money

I hate it. I always tip if I have a dollar on me but sometimes you don't and then you feel like an ass. I can get my own soap and towels.

Posted by Intangible on Aug-10-2009 20:18:

IMO Bathroom attendents should be keeping an eye on the room and making sure people dont get too rowdy/do illegal things. They should also be keeping the place *clean* (dealing with clogged toilets and such).

IMO that should be their main job.

At Guv, they fail at this.

At FW shes pretty good at keeping the place clean.

I will not tip based on the fact that she gave me a paper towel - I can do that on my own. But at the end of the night I sometimes hand over a few coins and thank her for 'holding down the fort'

For a n00b, I sincerely commend you on using the search bar.

Otherwise, you must be a long time lurker!

Oops, I should have searched thanks!

P.S. Nice find for someone who just registered 2-3 months ago...

If they actually did their job at keeping the bathroom a few levels above disgusting it's one thing.

But, when the urinals are clogged with vomit, the toilet is over flowing and the stalls are out of TP - and they are just passing me a piece of paper towel? no thanks.

I don't tip the attendants unless I'm really drunk or just feeling in a good mood.

All they do is hand me a piece of paper towel that isn't even enough to dry my hands, I always have to ask for extra. When you can't even hand over a piece of paper towel properly, wtf makes you think you deserve a tip?

Posted by chinamon on Aug-10-2009 20:41:

if they were only giving me a towel to dry my hands then i will not tip.
if they maintained the washroom and kept it clean throughout the night then i have no problem tipping them $1-2 each time i used the washroom (making sure i make a bit of a mess so their tip is worth it).

in the end i do not mind them. if they want to give me a towel and not get tipped then i have no problem with that. but they really are useless.

I always have to ask for a second piece too, that does get annoying...

I agree with most of that.

Guv is just unmanageable...but at other places, I like the idea of a permanent set of eyes in there. They aren't security and I don't expect them to be. They aren't "maintenance" and I don't expect them to be (but then call someone if 'shit' needs attention). Just that *someone* is in there seems to keep things in check moreso than they otherwise would be if no staff were in there.

as for tipping...I tip once during the night too.

that's why you asked for a looney..

on a more serious note, i went to this club on Friday..( i went to 3 so pick whichever you want), i usually give this guy a tip once a night. when i asked for paper towels since there wasnt any left, he basically didn't give a flying fuck..so guess what, No mo tip fo u!

Posted by nadezhda on Aug-10-2009 21:54:

i can't stand them. very rarely do they actually keep a bathroom clean and i am more than capable of grabbing my own paper towel, thanks. the one at footwork actually said to me "so how much $ are you going to give me?" are you fucking for real?!? for handing me a square of paper towel? give me a break! not to mention asking for a tip is beyond tacky.

Posted by DigiNut on Aug-10-2009 23:01:

Old thread, but what the hell.

Bathroom attendants are an annoyance, especially, as people have pointed out, when they don't really actively "attend", but I keep in mind that they have shitty enough jobs already, so being rude or stiffing them accomplishes nothing. And as far as club annoyances go, they are pretty minor.

I'll tip $2 the first time I see them, make some small talk, and that's it for the night. I think that's plenty; if 500 people use the bathroom and all tip $2, it's more than I make in a day. And if the other 499 people stiff, well, that's not exactly my problem.

There are much worse things we have to deal with at clubs. In my opinion, being expected to leave a $1 tip on a $5 drink that should have cost $2.50 or less is a far bigger insult. Those folks are livin' large; the bathroom attendant probably gets barely enough to pay the rent, and a few bucks isn't going to break the bank. Call it an act of charity.

I usually don't mind them .. the lady at footwork is a complete fool though. she demands i bring her redbull or give her money or she'll 'get me and my friends in trouble'. bahahah .. seriously lady? fuck off and get a real job.
