A student just phoned me - he threatened to beat a colleague up
2:00 AM - I receive a message: "Are you awake? If you are, please reply". It was from an unknown number. Jokingly, I replied.
2:05 AM - I receive a phone call:
"Pizza delivery, may I help you?" [I still thought it was a joke up to this point]
"Lira? I just did something really stupid." [His voice was really distressed]
"Who is this?"
"This is Akira* [He's my assistant]. I did something really really stupid"
"You broke up with Claire* last semester, and that was a pretty stupid thing to do. Please tell me you didn't break up with your new girlfriend, she's head over hee--"
"I threatened to kick professor Takahashi's* arse."
"You did what!?"
"Remember that, during his class, you came by the door and handed me some exams for me to correct?"
"Yes, of course, but that's not exactly unusual, and you did nothing wrong"
"Well, some students were making a very boring presentation, and I decided to correct them to spend the time."
"I'm listening"
"Professor Takahashi approached me and asked what I was doing. I said I was 'doing some stuff'. He said I wasn't showing my classmates any respect, and he said I should leave the classroom if I wanted to do something else. So I did."
"You bloody left the room?"
"Yes. But, that's not the stupid bit"
"Did you fart before you left?"
"After the class was over, I decided to have a word with him. But, I was so angry that, when I saw him, I pointed my finger at his forehead and said he was the one being disrespectful, because I was doing my thing, I didn't bother anyone else, and it was really rude to approach me like that. Then I said that, should he ever do it again, I'd kick his fucking arse"
"WAT"
"Yeah, that's what he said. I then spelled it out for him. 'Assu kikku, do you understand that, professor Takahashi?', I said about to smash my fist into his face"
"Bloody hell, what the hell did you do that for? He's barely a threat to anyone!"
"Yeah, I know, I just committed academic suicide"
"All right, calm down. Where are you now?"
"I'm at a friend's place. Professor Takahashi is going back to Japan, right?"
"Yeah, he is... but not before telling everyone you threatened him"
"What do I do?"
"Well, what can I say? Had you phoned me after he expelled you from his class, I could've calmed you down or something. But..."
"I know, I know... I decided to call you because I see you as a friend. Still, I don't know what to do. I'm stressed and I was nervous and...."
"Listen, I can't talk to you right now because I'm at my rents' and everybody is sleeping. Are you free tomorrow night?"
"Yes, I am."
"Good. Talk to you tomorrow then."
"Thanks, I'm sorry"
"Well, you should be. But, I'll talk to you about that tomorrow night"
I did something similar at work at the beginning of the week. My manager, who is a guy I've worked with for over five years and am really close to, just sat back and had me explain myself to him and his boss. I admitted that I was out of the line and got a slap on the hand.
Not sure how it'll work out in his case...
Is he both impressionable and fertile?
He is SOOOOOOOOOOOO incredibly fucked! He needs to start apologizing to the professor right now via email, and sucking some dick all over the department and campus. He needs to let the department chair know for sure that he feels terrible, and it will help if he can go see a doctor that will corroborate a story that he was suffering from anxiety or depression.
Academic suicide is right.
Of course he should apologise ASAP, and give some kind of reason for the explosion... whatever that was?
Are you going to talk to the professor, Lira?
Hmm, maybe bribe a doctor to say that was suffering from some kind of neurological condition? It's probably too late to take measures to keep the professor quiet, so that would be my first instinct.

Well, as a TA member you have a responsibility to tells us how this evolves.
As a friend, I don't think you can do much for him. What types of pizzas do you sell?
he should start telling everyone the teacher touched him, duh.

he should just go apologize immediately and hope no charges are brought up.
if it was a student of mine they would already be kicked out of school. After all these school shootings, student aggression is nothing to play with.
Yeah apologise profusely and hope the guy takes it on the chin.
In your situation I'd probably just suggest that to him, it sounds like he's learned his lesson via being freaked out.

And buy some flowers. And clean his teeth and clear his throat =/
That's a pretty bad move.
I'm sorry professor. I just had a rough day. My older sister, she just attempted suicide last night. My father, who abandoned my family before I was even born, visited me last week to say hello. His girlfriend looked so much like my mother. She apologized to me in secret on his behalf. I've just had all this pent up rage.
And I just pieced it all together before class. My mother is my sister. My sister is my aunt. His girlfriend is his sister and my mother. fml

I don't think an email apology will do it for a Japanese guy. I think he needs to go see him and apologise unconditionally in the most intense honorific Japanese he can muster and some very deep bows.
I think you;re doing the right thing Lira. If he's normally a good guy and a good student you should try to help him, but at the same time make sure he's really learned his lesson.. this guy really needs to grow up and get a grip on his emotions.

It is both a crime and a tort and, therefore, may result in either criminal or civil liability. Generally, the common law definition is the same in criminal and Tort Law. There is, however, an additional Criminal Law category of assault consisting of an attempted but unsuccessful Battery. |
