Atlanta Scene is sad now...
Used to have great acts coming though - at least on the way to WMF/WMC/
I remember seeing many great acts coming though via Liquified at WetBar such as Armin Van Buuren on a Thursday night in late March (March 22 to be exact) on his way to Miami. Also Sander Kleinenberg then also Robbie Rivera & George Acosta several times. Throw in some Above & Beyind & Ferry Corsten and all of that mashes to some freakin awesome shows - especailly the WetBar smaller venue events. I would venture to say that Sander Kleinenberg was the 2nd best show ever in Atlanta after the 1st best (AVB March 22nd).
Last 2 years, nothing but shit coming through there. WetBar gone - oh my go we can't go there - that is a "GAY" club - and now only limited venue crap shows once Blu/WetBar was taken over as an "acceptable" stright club. All of the straight clubs there died - 1150 became Opera wit shit sound & crowds, the other one Fever (I think) on Cheshire Bridge die out. What the hell is left. Nad now no real after hours worth a shit...
Arrrggghhh.....
Yep, it's pretty much dead as of right now.
it has to do with alot more than just the scene dieing we go through this conversation everytime someone pisses and moans about how things arent how they would like. simple you book the djs and you come up with the money as well and dont forget to build this awesome venue your thinking of too.

sorry to hear this. i'm in town for the holidays and will be with marti and rich at the diagnostik new years party they are throwing. doesn't seem like there is anything going on this december. usually every year i come home there is something going on but not this year. i'm very spoiled in LA, just wish you guys had the same here. hope it picks up soon
Here's to hoping it picks up again as well. I wish there was more I could do to show some support, but school, money, and my job are highly limiting right now in terms of free time.
armin comes to atlanta every year around wmc. last year was an incredible show. armin continues to take it upa notch each year i see him. i expect he will be around again in march/april
This thread comes up every year and I guess people just don't keep track of what is going on a regular basis here. December and January are always slow in Atlanta because a lot of the people that go out in Atlanta are college students and they are all out of school during this time. But just to show you its not dead in Atlanta this is what we, Liquified, have brought into Atlanta in 2009 and i'm sure I am missing.....

Atlanta had an awesome year up until about September. Seriously, we got everything you could ask for...from all the mainstream trance and house DJs to more "underground" artists you'd never expect to see here. Konrad Black, 2562, Martyn, Ryan Elliott, Appleblim, Bruno Pronsato, Tim Green, Lee Foss, Seth Troxler...just to name a few. If you haven't found something you like, you haven't been looking hard enough.
But yeah, things fizzled out pretty fast and Adam is pretty much right on the money about the nightlife environment in Atlanta. The main thing being that these smaller promoters just can't bring in artists like they used to without a steady venue...but hopefully things will change soon.
Liquified has continued to do their thing and brought in just about every bigger trance and house DJ you could ask for if that's what you're in to, (though I can see the unappeal if you're not a fan of Opera) and even some decent smaller artists like Joris Voorn and Nic Faniculli at Filter. I'm sure it will be just as steady for them in 2010.
I really hope things get back on track soon, I miss Bazzaar and all the crazy lineups we had here. I wish there was more I could do to help, but like Austin I'm pretty much limited to supporting good shows (when they happen) as much as I can.
2009 wasn't Atlanta's best year for sure, but come on. I saw Fanciulli, Burridge, and Joris Voorn each throw down at Filter, countless local/underground parties go off at Bazaar until it closed (see Trace's post above), and hung out with Phil K and others at Loca Luna while drinking beer and watching drunk girls get half naked in the kiddie pool. And that was just in the Summer, when I didn't have full time classes an hour outside of town and could actually go out and do stuff.
I would tell you to maybe go out a bit more, and to see some locals play instead of relying on Liquified to bring you expensive headliners each week, but clearly all you want to do is whine about how "the last 2 years have been shit." Why don't you go move to Nashville, or Portland, or Salt Lake City, or some other big city that doesn't have half the scene we do, and readjust your opinions a bit?
This past year was HUGE thanks to Liquified, Diagnostik, Cleaning Up The Dirty South, and Poplife.
Without any other venue besides Opera and Filter though, not much is going to happen in the next year.
This was a HUGE year.
Thanks to Liquified for bringing in so much talent. I got a bit annoyed a few times with Opera...and it did slow down there at the end, but if you look at the year in total, it was definitely an excellent year. Sugar Society up in Charlotte picked up the slack the last couple of months by the way. All in all, it was probably the best year in my opinion.
Sasha & Digweed - amazing show
Markus Schulz x3
Above & Beyond x2
George Acosta
Armin
Tiesto (cringe)
PvD (cringe)
The Crystal Method
Ferry Corsten x2
Cosmic Gate
ATB
Deadmau5
Gareth Emery
Blake Jarrell
Rank 1
Dubfire
And then there were a lot of other artists/DJs/shows that I didn't follow or care for...but obviously a lot of people did.

As I've stated before, I think the scene has kind of been dying recently, Yeah, it may happen at the end of the year, but this year just seemed a little slower. We did get all the big names, and that's great, but we haven't had any of the new up and coming guys. I mean, even Charlotte got Gareth to be excited about. As said before, the guys up in Charlotte have picked up the slack, but not all of us can make the trip out there. If Charlotte can get it, we should be able to. Maybe Liquified, or any other promoters, can give is one show they know about to look forward too!
I haven't felt like the scene has died. I have, however, skipped a lot of huge events this year. Why?
1. Economy. I'm not making any more money, but the prices for gas/parking/shows/drinks/etc is on a steady uprise.
2. Scheduling. Now that I have a "real" job, you won't see me out partying on Tuesday night. Or even Thursday night. I even missed Deadmau5 due to this.
3. Venues. Maybe I'm getting too old, but staff and patrons at the clubs left in Atlanta have a way of killing it for me.
I'm not really counting on any of these things changing soon, and by the time it happens I may really be too old. So... well, it was fun while it lasted =P
Thanks everyone who enjoyed our parties. Always appreciate the love
I think everything was already said, but I have to repeat. The run we had at Bazzaar was pretty special. Atlanta was getting on the map. We constantly had agents calling us to book their talent in Atlanta after the experience they had here. The shows were filled with great music, good people, and an awesome vibe. CUDS also was throwing killer parties at Bazzaar as well. Then throw in the parties liquified threw in June/July and I really thought Atlanta was back. We had the same talent here that NYC and LA had. When Bazzaar closed our techno parties died with it.

As someone we should all be supporting the local talent. That helps build the scene and proves to venues that EDM can consistently make them money. I think everyone knows that the huge trance (tiesto) and house/pop (Guetta) can sell, but can the mid to small more talented artist sell as well. I've had the privilege to book and play with some incredibly talented people right here in Atlanta. You should check them out and help grow the scene.
With that being said (shameless plug), we have a room full of talented locals playing NYE at Engine 11. See post on here or go to engine11atl.com to buy tickets.

Admittedly, it is a fantastic deal for some. I'm just a lighter drinker these days so I couldn't justify such. Although this seems to be the event discussed among my boyfriends buddies, so I might end up conning him for the ticket if I want to go out NYE.

urgh, not this type of thread again, every year................
First off Atlanta has just as much of a scene as Charlotte. I dont say one is better than the other and I come to Atlanta for shows more than most (but not all) people in Atlanta go out to shows in Atlanta. Yes we got Gareth and Blake but you got talent that we didnt get.
everyone needs to realize that this is a business, if it is profitable to bring a DJ then most likely you will get to see them. If it is not as profitable then count on the smaller promoters to try and book the DJ so they can try to build their name and hopefully turn a profit.
And that will only happen:
-If the agency lets them book said DJ, some artist you cant just say I have X amount of dollars now let me bring the DJ.
-If there is an open venue for a smaller promoter to book.
-If someone wants to risk their hard earned cash for you to have a good time
One thing that gripes me is every time there is a party that you have "room to move" because there is only 100 to 200 people there (sometimes less), people praise the party for not being rammed to the gills. Well guess what, most likely someone just lost money bringing that big named DJ and you will either not ever see that DJ again or the promoter will give it one more shot because they are trying to build the following of that DJ in the city.
