agree..Everything since has sucked. I just got Chrono Cross for PS1 and am looking forward to it. It's supposed to be one of the best RPGs ever.

Well you have to take everything in contex...sure PWSX games may look poor compared to todays console or OPC titles...but if you play them on your mobile, they still look fucking awesome!!!

i hated chrono cross, i had it for the psx when i was a teen. everyone else ejaculates over that game, but i personally thought chrono trigger was far superior.

Truth. Chrono Trigger is the best RPG ever made. Thought strangely, not my favourite.

chrono trigger is one of my favorites, but i still like final fantasy 3/6. chrono trigger was kinda dumbed down compared to ffvi. right now i'm about to start persona 3 on my ps2 emulator.. seems pretty awesome. mind you, i haven't played any new-ish rpg since ffix. and that was still during the psx days.. lol.

Yup, Earthbound is, by far, my favourite RPG ever made Kinetic must have a good memory unless he was just stating his own. Followed by FF4.

When it comes to overall quality, however, Im able to separate my favourites from the the "best".

Chrono Trigger and FF6 are very close on my list when it comes to 1st and 2nd place, but I place Chrono Trigger on top because I was able to enjoy it from start to finish, whereas I was frustrated and turned off by the end-game of FF6 (World of Ruin).

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Mar-13-2010 07:07:

Yeahhhh, World of Ruin music just depresses me whenever I hear it. If you stopped right at the transition though, you missed a ton of great stuff. But I think I agree - Chrono Trigger was a more enjoyable game throughout.

Picked up FF XIII today for PS3...it looks fantastic! Full 1080p gameplay. I do like the battle mechanics as well. Looking forward to getting past the 25 hr mark, as that's when it gets really good, so the reviews say.

@ Spam...yea I did remember u mentioning Earthbound a while back, and I remember that only since I had totally missed that game back in the day, and u had brought it to my attention. I picked it up on the Wii VC and loved it. Cheers dude!

The music when you're merely walking around the World of Ruin is hopelessly depressing, indeed (though we both know the mood of that music served its purpose quite well considering the world essentially just ended).

However, I think the World of Ruin airship music is among the best in the game. Since I haven't played through the game in a little while, I can't recall any parts of the game that I didn't really enjoy.

Spam, ill agree 100% that Chrono Trigger is the best RPG of all time. And Earthbound is a riot. Ill have to say, though, that Super Mario RPG holds a special place in my heart...its brilliant simplicity blended with its platforming elements combined for a game I won't soon forget.

FFXIII is actually a lot more enjoyable than I was assuming it would be. Characters are all (minus Vanille and Hope occasionally) not extremely annoying, and I'm actually interested in their struggle and story.

Combat is fun and frantic, although I'm sure the constant encounters will get old after a few more hours in. I've heard the end of the game is extremely challenging and pushes the combat system quite a bit, so I'm excited about that.

I also agree the series has gotten very stale lately, and I was assuming 13 would be more of the same / worse, but I'm fairly surprised.

No towns
No minigames
No side quests
No shops
No exploration
No airship

Have I missed anything else that's "awesome" about FF13?

lol...I would bang Lightning I dunno Spam, because it's different than previous doesn't automatically make it bad or no fun to play. I have only had a chance to play for an hr so I'll have a real opinion soon enough

The real killer for me is the lack of exploration. It's a giant hallway with cutscenes and battle sequences. If you didn't need to hold the joystick in one direction every once in a while, they could achieve the exact same effect by simply throwing you in 10 battles, followed by a cutscene.

That's not merely "different", it's a complete butchering of a game that supposed to be an "RPG".

Posted by Rodrico on Mar-15-2010 22:42:

Apparently to get to the fun stuff, its like 20 hours in or so. But meh, the game is pretty lame so far in regards to RPG's. Ill just try to bang this out in a weekend and return it for something better. Dragon Age expansion comes out tomorrow so ill be returning to that.

There are side quests, just later on.

Just because a Final Fantasy doesn't include these things doesn't make it bad. It's definitely not the best in the series, and there definitely are things wrong with it, but it's been a very addictive, enjoyable experience so far. I commend Square for stepping outside the box and trying something new, I prefer that to them just rehashing the same shit for the 13th time.

OK, so I have put in a couple hours so far, and I'm slightly annoyed at all the cut scenes. You get 2 mins of gameplay and then a 3 min cut scene. It's been the same enemies over and over as well. Storywise, it's getting better and it's cool u keep jumping around and playing the other characters simultaneously, but damn these cut scenes and lack of gameplay so far isn't that fun. Gotta get to that 25hr mark.

On a happier note, I got Awakenings and will be playing the shit out of this tonight

LOL what? Those things are just the foundation for what an RPG is, the game is missing so much more.

Without a world to explore, you're doing nothing more than watching an interactive movie. I'm told that you can't even go backwards in the game up to a point. So it's even worse than FFX in regards to it's limitations.

Keyword, "limitations". In a world where our consoles are only getting more powerful, these idiots took what should be an epic RPG experience, and locked you into a one-way alley with a few battles and lots of cutscenes.

The main draw towards RPGs, right from the start, was putting you into a world that you can explore and interact with. Where's the exploration in a giant one-way hallway? Where's the interaction when all you need to do to find the next treasure chest is wait til there's a bump to the left or right from that hallway on the minimap? You can't even talk to the citizens of the world you're saving!

FF13 is a pile of rubbish. But I'm glad that you're enjoying your experience. I can admit that I too love some HORRIBLE games.
