The mobile phone thread

Just thought it would keep all our geek talk about mobiles that is spread across several threads across time in here. Iphone bashing is not required but it is encouraged.

So let me start with a rant. Ever since the introduction of the ipad there have been romours about the new iphone. Even with no information at all available at this time, the consensus among apple zombies is that its going to be the best fucking device in the entire history of the universe. Well if apple fans can get excited over unsubstantiuated romours then so can those of us who are lookijng for something more than a fashion addon in our mobile phone.

Saying that, we know that the HTC HD2 is a device that is worthy of selling your soul for. So its rumoured replacement is bound to be on a whole new level of awesome.

quote:
For the daydreamers, here's an HTC HD3 rumor that we've just overheard. Warning, impossible specs ahead: a 4.5" touchscreen (1280 x 800 pixels), 115 x 65 x 10 mm (yeah, right), 1.5GHz Snapdragon with 1080p video decoding, 720p video capture via an 8MP camera. Oh, did we mention the 4G connectivity and the 1800mAh battery? Good luck fitting all that inside such a slim body.

So the whole thing sounds areat, and it probably will be...just one exception.

Most will agree that what was holding HTC handsets back for a while now is the outdated OS they are running on, namely Win Mo 6 (.5). Still great devices but with several limitations that just dont belong in todays hi end mobile market. So i was among the many that expected winmo to fix the problems of old and build on the fundation to deliver the next best thing in mobile operating systems.
Then came the unveiling of Windows Phone 7 platform, and the mroe that i listened and read about it the less i liked it. Basically what microsoft has done here is look at the iphone and say to themselves "hey, why buil on our existing power user base, why not strip our os of anything that made it special like proper multitasking, or the open arhiteture just to name a few, put in some fancy new graphical UI that appeals to the easily amused and get rid of ALL BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY WHILE WE ARE AT IT. hey It worked for apple, no reasin why we cant get away with putting something useless on the market"
I guess that since Billy has bone away the men in charge have forgotten that we expect more of microsoft than we do of apple since they have enough bad reputation alredy, they have to work extra hard to appear to be even on a same level as something that is made for people that are distracted by anything shiny, polished and oh all so pretty.
Seriously who the fuck came up with these bright ideas...no backwards compatibility for hundreds of thousands of existing applications out there? No multitasking? No custom UIs (yes, if you are like me, and loved HTCs Sense UI youre out of luck...youre stuck with Win7n default UI which i alredy hate, but ill come to that later) and this one i love the most...the only way to install new apps is via the new marketplace because if you want to amke apps for the new winmo phones...yeah you have to be a licenced developer. Well isnt that nice, imagine if the only way you could install new software on your dekstop pc would be wia some online app store...how long would people tolerate that before blowing up the MS HQ. As somewhat of a developer myself i have written many apps for various symbian and winmo devices for myself, my friends or for work which was the beauty of these platform...you coulčd code and install anything you wanted. For myself i found that the best ebook readers on any platform were the ones i developed myself, for others or for work there was always something tht needed to be done but no existing software managed to do it so well or so simple. But it was all right because the desired app was only a few hours of coding away, but now. Everything has to go over the marketplace, and not only that i have to pay an annual fee to be a developer, even if i only write apps for myself or my friends. Fuck you Microsoft. Seriously. Fuck you.
The next thing that got me pissed off is no custom UIs. I loved thje way that Sense UI was layed out (TouchWiz wasnt bad as well). All the information i could possibly want on a short notice was right there, at the main screen. Something more specific, just a few flicks of a finger away, and a nice list of installed software only a push of a button away. Simple, effective, intuitive. So of course that had to go and be replaced by a few "hubs" that will contain everything you have on your phone...because all softweare one wants to use can be easilly devided into only 6 categories...well when i say 6..one is reserved for the marketplace, one for media, one for people (which is everything from phonebook to fucking twitter) and one for xbox live...because everybody uses fucking xbox live. Where does my 3rd party navigation software go. I use that instead of google maps which somehow comes on most phones as standard for a reason. Because google maps is fucking useless.

Congratulations microsoft..youre making another iphone...completely forgetting the fact that those people that want an iphone....have a fucking iphone and that the people that bought windows mobile device did so because even with all its faults (and there were many) if you were looking for getting the very most out of your device it wa still a much better option than an iphone.

I will give Winmo 7 a chance, as i do with many new things mobile related. But with its usability severely limited, the doubt that any of my favourite apps will be rewritten to work on wm7 and the inability for myself to make my own software or modify it in any way...yeah, doesnt really sound like something that i would want to actually spend money on. Android is still open for the time being though...perhaps the time is come when the power user will migrate to that and leave the new wm7 devices back in the kids section with the iphone.

Such a shame...was so looking forward to the wm powered HD3...fuck you microsoft

Why not just keep it in one of the other 8374013841057 threads that already exist? No. This, surely, will be THE thread.

I've a rooted & modded Moto Droid which keeps me relatively happy. It's got a rooted version of android 2.1 (rooted from the Nexus 1) so some features are buggy as there's no official 2.1 droid release yet (that I know of). So when I feel like being a loser I can adjust the processor min and max speeds, allowing me to overclock the 550mhz droid to potential maximum 1.2 ghz, although it's really not necessary. Super nintendo played almost perfectly smooth before I could adjust the cpu. Furthermore the relatively small battery gets just fucking owned over 800mhz.

I can make phone calls on my phone, and sometimes I can even write text messages. It's awesome!

i have yet to root my moment. i tried and it failed repeatedly. there is, however, an official sprint update for it. i'm pretty sure it ups the OS to 2.0 and it supposedly fixes a bunch of battery life issues.

I want that N900. Maemo FTW!

PS: I currently have a BlackBerry 9700, Nokia N95-3, Sony Ericsson Z750a (debranded though), & one functional watch phone. Active SIMs: 4 US, 6 UK, 1 Belgium (Belgian?).

does bashing the iphone make you alpha geek? that's what every geek seems to think...

All about the block cell phone.

It does look cool.

I haven't done any research on it though - What are the major differences between it and the N97? (which I bough a couple of months ago, and love dearly)

The OS is different - Good or bad?

That may be true but bashing on apple products in general just seems like the right thing to do

I got the N97, and they released the N900 right after.
Get an iPhone 3GS and they release a new one after.
Get an HD2 and they will release an HD3.

You're always going to be fucked because there's always something better.
At least we can be happy that all of the smartphones are actually pretty damn good. None of them are shit because they all do quite a shitload of things, but nobody is ever happy because there's something better out there.

Posted by kr00t0n on Mar-17-2010 10:42:

My HD2 will last me the next 12 months, then I will most probably move over to Android with whatever is similar to the HTC Supersonic at that time.

As much as I have enjoyed WM over the years, niggles included, WP7S looks like total and utter fail.

I love my N97

I guess I'm not a 'hardcore' smartphone user, but it fucking rocks, IMO.

Oh it's a great phone but it's still buggy as all hell, the processor is abysmal and the response time is terrible when you compare it to something like the iPhone. Nokia fucked up bad. I wish I'd known the N900 was coming out, I would have waited.

I guess you're in more of a hurry than I am

N900 looks cool as fuck though.

I can get 3G with it because I'm with T-Mobile (USA) and live in an HSPA+ market. It also supports 3G on 900/2100 though for you European/non-North American folk though. I believe they may release an 850/1900 version of it for your Rogers, Bell, Telus, Telcel, Movistar, & AT&T users if this one performs well. Remember the N900 is the 1st Nokia tablet with a phone in it as well & the 1st Maemo device being marketed more to the mainstream as opposed to the earlier iterations.

Main difference from N97 is faster CPU and the open source Maemo OS which might be competing with Android. I believe Maemo is a modified Debian, allow you to hypothetically do many many things with it.

The N97 runs the old Symbian S60 (5th Edition) which is now being called Symbian ^1 because Nokia is remaking that OS (new versions are called ^2, ^3, & ^4) for new devices coming out.

wrong thread boobee

just an FYI

The only correct way to pluralize "BlackBerry" is "BlackBerry smartphones"
BlackBerries, Blackberry's, and BlackBerrys are all incorrect.

Straight from RIM's branding guidelines.

I dont know why i keep on reading about the WP7S as every new feature they proudly announce is a slap in the face (or a kick in the balls more likely) of old users. Ive already commented on no multitasking, but here is something equaly outrageous.

quote:
Microsoft just mentioned in a Q&A session here at MIX10 in no uncertain terms that clipboard operations won't be supported on Windows Phone 7 Series... so that's that. Kind of ironic considering that the WinMo of old has been enjoying the functionality since time immemorial, isn't it? Of course, anything is possible going forward -- they've said on several occasions in different talks and sessions this week that they're already looking at a number of enhancements that were scoped out of the initial release of the platform -- but for the phones you buy this holiday season, don't expect to be copying anything between apps.

Update: We just super-double-ultra-plus-confirmed this with Microsoft -- Windows Phone 7 Series will not have copy and paste functionality. There is a data-detection service built into the text-handling API that will recognize phone numbers and addresses, but Microsoft says most users, including Office users, don't really need clipboard functionality. We... respectfully disagree? Sure, let's leave it at that.

Source: Engadget

Seriously...office users dont need clipboard functionality? Seriously? The guys at engadget might be ok with respectfully disagreeing, i want the people responsible for these atrocities hung, quatered and drowned...in acid! I simply have no words to describe the disaster WP7S is going to be when it is released...

next iPhone?

quote:
Well what do you know about this? With all those rumors flying around that the iPhone 4G we'd spotted was no more than a Japanese knock-off of an Apple product, it was starting to look like this thing was too good to be true. That is until one of the Engadget editors spotted what seems to be solid proof that this is -- in fact -- the next iPhone. If you'll recall, the night before the iPad was revealed, we had leaked shots of the device from what appeared to be an Apple test lab. Upon further inspection of these pictures today, the aforementioned editor discovered that the new iPhone 4G we've just gotten photos of is actually sitting on the table beside the iPad prototype! Imagine how blown our minds were when we realized we have had a photo of the next iPhone for months! As you can see in the pic above, the left side of the new device is clearly visible on this table in the upper right hand corner, and since we believe that these photos come directly from an Apple testbed, it's hard to deny that the phone you've just seen is in fact the real deal. Not only that, but we suspect that the device on the tablet itself is also a version of the new phone (you can see what looks like aluminum along the bottom) which seems to be housed in some type of iPhone 3G-like case.

Additionally, a source -- who confirms this is the next Apple iPhone -- also tells us that the device apparently does have a higher res screen on-board, a front-facing camera, a higher resolution camera with flash, and takes MicroSIM cards (that's the little "button" around the side you see in the TwitPic which is floating around the internet). We're working on uncovering more info, but right now you can take a look at the proof above for yourself, and in the gallery below.

Engadget believes so http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/18/iphone-4g-proof/

but macrumors says it's just another bootleg http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/18...se-counterfeit/ & http://www.applesfera.com/curiosida...-nuevo-iphone-2
