Washington DC Clubs Nearly Empty

I've noticed over the past several months that DC clubs are pretty much empty these days. Anybody got any ideas why? Has the population of DC shrunk recently?

Has anyone else in DC noticed the same thing?

armin was packed. guetta was packed most recently and in november i think, calvin harris was packed, tiesto was, benny benassi and kaskade will be. when I say packed I mean cluster fuck shoulder to shoulder

ferry had a pretty good crowd, above and beyond had a pretty good crowd, eric prydz packed the shit out of lima, but its not that big of a club.

could have used better turnouts at svd, gareth emery, wally lopez, shlomi aber, dirty south, dahlback.

sometimes it doesnt seem packed when it really is at Fur because that dance floor is HUGE. I mean shit, i'd guess its at least 5 times larger than pacha's main floor. if not a little bigger. I wouldn't say it's as big or webster hall or crobar, but it's a nice size. so maybe thats why.

i've been quite happy living and going out in DC. every thursday there's a sick house/prog/'european style' DJ. every satuday there's a giant trance star. sometimes those roles are reversed. I've gotten to see so many DJs i've never seen. wally lopez last week, funkagenda this week, blake jarrell, guy gerber, joris voorn, bobina in a few weeks.

where the crowd is? I don't fuckin know, it seems to be there for the most part. I guess that means we need to do a better job of getting the word out.

all that's Glow-related and the parties are at Lima every thursday and Fur every saturday.

as for other clubs, I hit up 18th st lounge one night for sam burns (some him at Marvin's as well). I don't really know how 'packed' either of those places can get but ESL is on sudays and marvins is on wednesday. 18th had a good amt of people i guess, and the top floor was minimal tech wit this kid soloman sanchez and someone else. it was sick, i stayed up there the entire night.

And now will eastman opened up a new venue, U st. Dance Hall or something like that where he's throwing EDM parties each week. If there crowd wasn't there I don't think he'd open a club.

As far as DC88 goes, it's harder for them to get people to come because tha tmusic has such an acquired taste. It's one thing for blkmkt and resolute to get tons of people to come out in NY, not as easy in DC, less people = less smelly weird dancing techno loving europeans (no offense to anyone on here, all TA's smell like peaches).

I heard there were only 10 people at troy pierce when he was in DC. Who's fault is that? the promoter for not informing people, the people for not showing up. or troy for not making a bigger name for himself. who knows

The last time I went clubbing down here was for Ferry at one of the Glow Saturdays. The nights that Glow run are usually always a good turn out. When it's a big name (Armin, Tiesto, Guetta, whateva) then it's guaranteed to be a packed house.
I remember when I saw Tiesto back in the fall on a Sunday. Honestly, after the resident was done and Kaleidescope went on, the main room was so packed that they closed off entrance to the main room. It was chaos.
There was a crowd of 60+ people outside the main room entrance all shouting "1, 2, 3, PUSH!!!" trying to break through the wall of bouncers to get in the main room. Definitely was not an empty night. Nope.

But other than that. I can imagine how at this point every other club isn't getting the crazy nights they were back in the fall. It's the end of the spring semester and everyone is getting work done. Shit is always way more hectic in the fall.

I dont know what you talking about, all the EDM and non edm (main stream) clubs Ive been hitting up were pretty packed.

Where have you been going?

the main club(promotion) in dc is glow.they have gone in a different direction in the last few years, especially when nations closed down.i feel they tried to capitalize on that, thus some of the more uplifting producers who would normally get a look fall to the sidelines.for instance, myon and shane 54 will be at the shadowlounge in dc.back in the day that would have been a glow event for sure.

still, glow continues to book great dj's.just for me and some of the old schoolers not as often.so ill be there as long as they keep getting my kind of djs, even if its only occasionally

I don't see them being able to draw a crowd at all here in the city.

Thanks for your thoughts,

It just seems Fur's lines used to be longer. There would be double lines wrapping around the block some months ago. But I could be wrong.

When is this?! Who does the promoting for these nights? Do you get other guys like these two..like Ashley Wallbridge maybe or some other artists of that calibur?

I dunno. I love D.C's scene, especially being from Philly, because I have the option to go out every yesterday and see a world class DJ. But honestly, I really think Glow need to branch out in the trance DJs they get to come. If they can get Talla2XLC to play at Fur then how come I haven't seen guys like John O'Callaghan, Tyas & Simon, Colontonio, Jon O'Bir, Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell (now that'd be fabulous!). You get where I'm going.

I mean Glow has their Thursday's at Lima and they can keep those events housey and in that direction. But I'd really like them to branch out. I feel like they have a bank of DJs and every year they just rearrange the order of DJs. I wanna see some surprises on the schedule for once!!!

when glow left for ibiza fur started doing their global saturdays and were getting dj's that glow wouldnt touch. i saw john o callghan, the thrillseekers, mark norman, cor fijneman,Ronski Speed,talla2xlc,sean tyas, and a bunch of others.

that was the first time in a long time i was coming out almost weekly.the crowds weren't mind blowing, but i felt they were getting there and plus at that time ibiza was the newest thing so of course pulling in that "im only here to be seen" crowd was that much harder.

then ibiza went through their "problems" and glow moved back to fur.i kinda thought the guys who ran global saturdays would switch over to ibiza but it never happened.but i have a feeling though that your going to start seeing dj's like this and other trancier dj's around dc soon

You just named a handful of my favorite DJs. WTF!!!
And I remember Marcello telling me awhile back that he played a gig at Fur. But it was the dude behind Majai that ran those events.

Now, who got Myon & Shane 54 here, like what promo squad? Josephines is usually thats the Thursday night hot spot for the kiddies from GW, GTown, and AU (yehhh). Been there a few times, pretty nice club and the vibe is always great.

I'll take a night off from studying for this...hells yeah.

i go there every year for my buffalo bills!its the only area in new york i care about

Posted by DCgirly on Apr-21-2010 19:28:

Yeah what clubs have you been going to besides Fur?

The techno and electro scene is alive and well with mnmlife and District Ignition parties. U Street Music Hall, Muse, Napoleon, Bar7, etc are the places to go now. 95% of the Glow regulars that I know have abandoned trance so they don't go to Glow events anymore.

mnmlife events
04/23 - Misstress Barbara @ Muse
05/14 - Matthew Dear @ Muse

Last time Cor was in DC was with Mark Norman doing around the world in 80 days tour. That was like 3-4 years ago. And this was when Fur still had issues with their sound system. You didn't miss anything.

As for DC not being able to fill out clubs. I don't think it's just DC. Economy has to do with it a little, but mainly, there aren't any new artist that grabs your attention.

If you look at the history, there always were new genre that popped up and took the scene by storm. Such as acid house, big beat, prog house, trance, electro.

I still remember the chill i got when I frist heard one of those classic EDM songs. I just don't get that feeling anymore. I'm sure something will pop up and get the attention of the clubbers and we'll be clubbing like hell once again.
