Question Your go-to synth(s) by sound

Sorry for another synth poll, but it's a slow day at work and another forum/thread got me thinking about which synths excel at different sounds. So, WTH, which synth(s) or instruments (hardware, software, analog, digital, sample-based, etc.) do you typically go to for different types of sounds? I'll go first, but feel free to use these or your own categories.

Basses: Trilian, Strobe
Plucks: Virus, Sylenth1, Alchemy
Arps: Alchemy, Virus, Omnisphere
Pads: Alchemy, Virus, Omnisphere, Gladiator, Yamaha FS1R
Leads: Gladiator, Virus, Strobe
SFX/Weird: Cypher, Absynth, samples
Real Instruments: Kontakt, Kurzweil PC3X

These are the synths that come to mind for me right away when I want to start with a preset to get an idea down, or create the sound from scratch (except for the FS1R, which requires a LOT of patience and more brains than I have to program it).

Basses: Trilian, Operator, Sylenth (drum basses ie toms, etc)
Plucks: Virus, Sylenth1, Nexus, Massive
Arps: Moog Modular!
Pads: Atmosphere, Albino
Leads: what's a lead?
SFX/Weird: every synth
Real Instruments: Trillian for the slap bass

on the subject of real instruments, can anyone recommend me a good horn/brass sampler or rompler? willing to pay up to $300 for something decent

Do you have a good sampler (e.g., Kontakt, Halion)?

For sound effects and weirdness for me, still nothing beats Reason (well, maybe Max/MSP, but I'm not always in the mood to tackle that).

This is pretty much all Reason, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOJu4c_Ssw4

Same with my other noise tracks. The cable system is brilliant for hooking up weird configurations and making twisted sounds.

Re: Your go-to synth(s) by sound

Basses: Virus KC, Nord Lead 3

When I get a new production machine I might move away from the hardware a bit more...my computer's quite old, it helps to have all the sounds generated by hardware...

I like to mix and match myself.

But for dirty basses and grimy ambient fx - OranZe vsti is excellent. The randomize button on it is great fun as well. And, it's freeware which makes it even better :P

Only a few people that use Albino, and so many that use Z3ta. Haven't checked out the latter, guess I should go and try it, if it's so highly regarded.

Posted by Waza on Aug-12-2010 08:29:

Z3ta is a great plug in and cakewalk was doing a deal on it a while ago, don't know if there still doin it.

Yip still doing it just go to there site.

Seriously, $20 for the downloadable version? Insta-buy!

Bass: Predator, Blue (most underrated ever)
Plucks: Sylenth1, z3ta
Leads: Sylenth1
Arps: Vanguard
Pads: Albino, Atmosphere, z3ta
Strings: atmosphere/sampletank
SFX: Samples

Synth1 1.12: everything, well... 9000 patches...

This list can vary.

Bass: Trillian / V-Station / Novation Bass Station / KORG Polysix
Leads: Sylenth1 / V-Station / Predator
Pads: V-Station / Nexus 2 / Sylenth1 /
Plucks: V-Station / Sylenth1
Ambient & Random: Gladiator / NI Massive

Of course, there are a whole host of others which I use, but there are what I would call my 'go to' synth's.

I think my favourite ever audio proocessing vst would have to be the Waves Renaissance Compressor or the Sonnox Oxford Inflator. Both are so true it is unreal.
