match.com

one of my buddies was telling me about some dude he knows that gets alot of dates off that site. i called BS and i think 99% of all online dating sites are just scams!!

what does the CORe have to say.

Posted by aquila on Sep-12-2010 05:04:

Scams for sure. Plus most of the girls on those sites are either skanky hoes or ugly as fuck moles.

fuck the pay ones, okcupid is good, plus they do a lot of cool shit with their data like neat graphs on peoples preferences based on age, sex, and race.

I don't see anything wrong with dating sites. I've heard good stories and horror stories, just like with everything else in life. You just have to be smart about it.
I think that in general, if you're not good at dating in the real world, you won't be any good at it in the online world.

In other words....... you?

Posted by SPACEMASTERS on Sep-12-2010 06:10:

I dont think they are a scam.
I never knew anyone that used it, went to the home office for the company I work for in Nj, and 3 of the girls I know from there use those online date sites.
One just recently moved in with a guy she met from there.

Like all dates good and bad stories.

The thought of looking at neat graphs and data etc. is really weird to me when considering who to date. I don't know quite what it is, but I suppose it feels to me like it should be more of an 'organic' process, and poring over data is way too efficient and formal.

*shrug* maybe I'm just not open-minded enough for online dating; obviously a lot of other people like the benefits of it.

They dont make the graphs for each person, every so often on the dev blog they post some neat research like the top likes for white, blacks, asians, latinos, etc for both male and female...

Ohh yeah I see what you mean. I suppose that is kind of interesting. To be fair in my spare time I look at academic journals around sexuality and relationship research (doing it now while I have access to them!) - that's kind of similar.

But another example is my Indian friend, quite an attractive woman, who wants an arranged marriage from India. She says you can literally go on a site and pick a husband based on a number of biodata-like specifications - I find that weird, although in a not-for-me-but-fine-for-you sort of way.

Yeah, I miss having Uni access to studies etc. from the database

One guy here from TOTA/COR had an arranged marriage. No more than a couple of years ago? Posted pics from his wedding and stuff. I think he was Pakistani?

What was his name??? I hate it when I can't remember stuff like that

Edit: Ummie was his TA name, I think. Cool guy.

As bad as this sounds, I sorta like the idea of arranged marriages ... but thats just cause I am too lazy to even attempt to start a relationship most of the time.

Though there is someone I sorta like at the moment...

It's the one thing I'm freaking out about for when I'm done with my degree. That access has always just been there for the last 6 years!

Oh that sounds cool, they really make a huge song and dance of it over there - I was lucky enough to go to such a wedding back in 1997 in a little village in Pakistan

Go back as a librarian student... One of my cousins is doing that at the University of Washington... The number of databases she has access to is mind boggling!

Posted by FuzzQi on Sep-12-2010 08:42:

But I don't want to be a student forever

I'm pretty sure FuzzQi is doing his Masters Degree in psychology. I don't think he's angling for a librarian job

Posted by FuzzQi on Sep-12-2010 08:47:

Close - Postgrad Diploma in Arts/Psychology. Masters is another year on top of this one

I already work as a business consultant too

Well, colour me hopeless.

I knew it was something postgrad and psych though

I did undergrad psych, so I guess that's why it stuck in my head.

Yea, but if you are afraid of losing access to data!

Besides it'd be a graduate degree. Though you said you are already doing a post-grad masters.

Its actually a bigger field than librarian its like data something retrieval or some crazy name, but most become heads of libraries with the degree, either in like public libraries or in corporate libs. Its a crazy field I didn't even think existed... What with google...

I've never used one, but I've heard both good and bad stories, just like any other method of finding dates.

It's funny, too... most of the people that I've known who have used a site like that actually have no trouble meeting people, and have a lot to offer (as opposed to what I'd expect to be the stereotype). One good (female) friend of mine tried eHarmony (my girlfriend's best friend). Mind you, this girl is is very sociable, very nice, very fun to be around and smoking hot gorgeous. She has absolutely no trouble meeting people, but for whatever reason, tried out this site. She met a guy there and became very involved in a relationship with him. Turned out he was a complete dick and she ended up in one of those controlling relationships where he basically ended up running her life for a while.

At the same time, my little brother has met some really good people using the free ones. Nothing is ever certain in the dating world, and this is no exception.
