Must be my age - finding myself falling for the 'clean' sound.
Just a taste thing but just wondered if anyone else there is becomming a sucker for the clean?
Nothing serious here guys, no right or wrong, just curious if others maybe find thier ears yearning for space and cleanliness lately?
Lately I find I'm drawn to very clean tracks which might include short envelope times, mainly non to fullsome verbs, lots of lovely space and air around each sound and dare I say it ......... less layering.
I've been through a phase of layering leads, pads and basses but lately like the challenge of trying to find the 'right sound' if there is such a thing, that tends not to need much or even any layering.
I personally think my kicks are more palatable now I'm only layering 2 at most (one main and one clicky one with a short ambient verb).
Having played and recorded the electric guitar for the first time ever yesterday, i'd have to say a big fat no
I don't know if I'd call it a "clean" sound but I'm definitely trying to achieve more with less nowadays. That's not saying I'd be going for a minimal sound or anything, I just find myself stripping unnecessary FX and backing sounds from my tracks.
yup sounds like your on your way to making pussy adult contemporary.
Sounds like you mean "spare" more than "clean."
I usually hear "clean" used in contrast to "dirty" (i.e. noisy, distorted, or otherwise not so pristine), not in contrast to "highly layered."

the mixdown must be clean but the separate elements should be dirty as fuck.

on topic/out of topic
i don't think it's about the age, maybe you're tired from the same routine, after weeks listening to Hernan Cattaneo i usualy enjoy the first trance tune i play, also when everyone switched to digital someone quoted "you'll miss the hiss",now we all want moare analogue :P

A good mix will always be a good mix. I've tried making things clean but soon realised it doesn't suit my sounds, which are typically heavy on delay, often with a drop of downsampling and I keep sounds in various amounts of various filters to add atmosphere and distribute sounds in the mix.
This means I'm always going to have some dirt in there but I think I mix it well. Its only going to get worse as I'm in the market for a Juno 106, which I'm sure will only lead to more analog stuff and more filth
I'm more for the "ying yang" theory of production.
What I mean is I couldn't see myself using all clean sounds for a track OR all dirty sounds. I like it better when you have a dirty/high pressure type of pad and these pristine little plucks emerge from it. Or even the opposite where you have a clean flowing pad and a nasty synth line is brought into the mix.
I'm definitely not a fan of clean basses though, all my basses need some sort of dirt. And if I have a clean sound like a sine pluck I always usually try to have a secondary more dirty sounding melody playing under it. I think its the contrast that winds up bringing more emotion to the track, not really sticking to one or the other.
Leon Bolier's Phantasm pretty muchs sums up what I call clean. I feel bored...
I feel bored too.
I feel like Gotan Project.
Fridays gmt+2 are always the best in production studio, no matter what. I'm always drunk tihs time.
Ehhh... drinking is such a messy and depressing "high".
Opiates are where its at. =] As long as you don't get out of control... which has definitely happened before. Always a fun drug to start never a fun drug to stop.
I prefer a nice mixture of pharmaceutical grade opiate cut with prescription methamphetamine aka desoxyn. Actually my only vice is very expensive champagne. Well not very expensive but expensive enough for me. My wine cooler has about 3000$ in champagne at the moment. The bubbles don't upset my stomach and I feel fancy and shit.
I pretty much have a pharmacy at my house as my sister is an anesthetist. Not that I really touch that stuff unless I'm really celebrating something. I have all the bases covered. Opiates, uppers, anxiolytics, GHB, a nice drug called lyrica which sort of mimics being drunk but is actually quite benign. I also grudgingly have a few of the street drugs people are into in case I have company. Lets just say my parties are off the hook. But it is more of something I carry as a good host. You never know what your company is into and I like to have my bases covered. I also hate dealing with drug dealers and heavy drug users for that matter. If people can tell you are on drugs, you've gone too far.
My girlfriend only lets me take that out if there is someone important over or it is either Halloween or NYE.
3000$ in champagne...thats a waste...for me, because bubbly water always upset my stomach...farting+studio=:/
I don't drink when making music.
