What happened to Central Station Adelaide?

Just got back from uni holz to find out that there's no longer a central station in Rundle mall! Anyway, I went along to the new place on the corner of Hindley and King William and it's was sooo small and had such a poor choon range that I almost cried. Anyone know where I can go now?

Posted by matt_a on Jul-29-2002 11:36:

Why don't yu start a record shop in Adelaide?

Posted by stamper on Jul-30-2002 11:49:

Dowlz, i am the only other guy here from Adelaide, and i dont DJ, so i'm not much help. Dance Arena i thought was the best for providing 12", have seen a few good ones there this year. Centrals hardly ever had anything decent IMO. Whats this new on thats opened up???

Also, what uni do u go to??

Posted by DJ Dowlz on Jul-31-2002 01:33:

I'm not quite certain what the new place is called. Something like 738 Records. Anyway, as I said, it's on the corner of King William and Hindley, but it's really dodgey. They seriously have 12 trance vinyls! And the shop's the size of a shoebox. Dance arena has a pretty small vinyl section, quite a number of white labels actually. I gave them a list of vinyls yesterday to see if they could import them, so I'll see how they go.

Oh, I got to Uni Adelaide.

Posted by stamper on Jul-31-2002 12:22:

With dance arena can you pretty much give them a list of vinyls and theyll import them for you for about $20 each? Thats pretty good if you can do that. The best ever record store i've been to was Centrals in Melbourne. A great selection. Are there any better places in Melb??

Posted by DJ Dowlz on Aug-09-2002 10:14:

OK, maybe 618 records (that's the correct number I think) doesn't suck that much. I picked up Ralphie B - Massive from them today. Also, this evening I went over to the new record store on Rundle Street (Mid-Town records) and they have quite a small collection, but still larger than anything at 618 or dance arena. Picked up Energy 52 - Cafe del mar (original/Three 'n' one mix). Plus, they import, which is cool, so I've ordered Armin - Communication and the great thing is that no matter what the record is, it's still only $20 :-)

Also, I tried dance arena for imports, and they're pretty decent. Had about 3/4 of the stuff I wanted, including Three Drives - Greece 2000 (Lost Tribe vs Miro vocal mix) - I was pretty impressed that they could get this mix. Sanity charge $20 a pop.

Anyway, does anyone know any other record stores in Adelaide?

Posted by gumble on Aug-09-2002 18:56:

Noooooooooooo!!!

Dammit, thats where I got most of mah records from. True, they didnt have much trance and stuff, but my budget was hardly ever big enough to buy heaps.

Grr, this sucks, Dance Arena are poo!

I always thought it was busy there! Business shoulda been good etc. Isnt there another store down at marion??

Anyway just in case your wondering why im from tassie and know abt that place - well i frequently go to adelaide, its a second home for me

Hmm, next time im there, ill tell ya. Would be nice to meet some TAs from adelaide.

I had a look in the yellow pages - is that store "In 2 Music"?? And yeah, it would be good to meet up with some TA's. We should go along to Chemistry one night and perhaps meet up for the Corsten gig too.

So hang on, i'm getting confused, the decent record store in Adelaide are:

- Dance Arena
- The new one on hindly street (near rundle mall)
- and ?????

Where is that other one youre talking about?? 618 or something?? And hi gumble... if you count yourself as someone from Adelaide then thats 3 of us on here now. Perth and Melbourne rule this forum. *sigh*

Posted by gumble on Aug-12-2002 15:48:

Hmm, In 2 music, if im thinking right, is an evil commercial cd franchise, so dont go there :P

There is another record store that advertises in onion, but i cant remember whats its called.

Happy hunting though, i want to come and get some more tunes though, so any names of places would be greatly appreciated!!!

To the best of my knowledge, there are three record stores in Adelaide. The best range for trance, even though it is pretty small is at Dance Arena and you should know where that is (corner of Rundle Mall and Pultney). Next best is this new store (about a month old) above Rundle St - I think it's 180 Rundle St (is it called 'The Verandah'?). The other place is called 618 records and is near the corner of Hindley and King William (opposite where the old pizza hut was).

Hope that helps your out mr_stamper :-) and yes, I wish there were more people from Adelaide on this board :-(

Finally there's this really cool place called www.juno.co.uk :-) I was incredibly happy with them. I ordered 4 vinyls about 12 days ago and they arrived today - all were in absolutely perfect condition (never been played) and two of them (Binary Finary - 1998, Rank 1 - Airwave) were shrinkwrapped. Only trouble with them is shipping - 6pound for the first, 2pound thereafter.

Posted by stamper on Aug-13-2002 10:38:

Thanks for clearing that up dowlz. Sounds like youve got quite a collection now dowlz, especially with some of those recent purchases youve mentioned. Could you share your list of vinyls??

Also, how much did it end up costing in AUD for the 4 vinyls from Juno??

I wish I had a lot of vinyls!!! Currently, I only have ...
Aurora featuring Naimee Coleman - Ordinary world (Positiva)
Binary Finary - 1998 (Kinetic)
Delerium featuring Sarah McLachlan - Silence (Netwerk)
DJ Sakin & Friends - Protect your mind (Positiva)
Energy 52 - Cafe del mar (Grand casino)
iio - Rapture (Data)
Gouryella - Tenshi (Codeblue)
Rank 1 - Airwave (Free For All Holland)
Veracocah - Carte blanche (Positiva)

still in order/transit from the UK (HMV)...
Ralphie B - Massive
Push - Strange world
William Orbit - Barber's Adagio for Strings
DJ Tiesto - Urban train
Ian van Dahl - Castles in the sky (Wippenberg)

Next in line for purchase, a best of Matt Darey megafest - ie
Blockster - Grooveline (Matt Darey mix)
Delerium - Heaven's earth (Matt Darey mix) - that song just takes me away!!!
Three Drives - Greece 2000 (Lost Tribe vs Miro vocal mix)
and IF I EVER FIND SOMEWHERE THAT HAS THIS IN STOCK, System F - Out of the blue (the album, not the single)

As far as juno go. I ordered five songs from them on a Thursday night. Within 8 hours, I was sent an email saying one of the items (Angelic - Stay with me) wasn't actually in stock (some bastard in the shop had bought it before my order had been processed ... grrr) however I wouldn't be charged for it and they'd ship the rest immediately. No other correspondence. Arrived 12 days later (Tuesday). The records were in mint condition (never been played, two of them were shrinkwrapped). Overall, it cost me 18.16 pounds for the records and 10.80 pounds for the shipping. I think Juno charged approximately 4 pounds for the first record and 2 pounds thereafter. Double vinyls count as two records. You also get 15% off the vinyls cause of VAT. www.xe.com for the exchange rate (about 3:1)

I've also ordered some stuff for HMV (2 weeks ago), but with them it may take a while to get in some vinyls, depending on their availability. For instance, 3 of the vinyls I ordered were available within 24hours and ready to ship. HMV then waited two weeks for the other two vinyls (Push - Strange world, Tiesto - Urban train) to come from their suppliers and as yet they haven't arrived (even though the fricking website said "usually ships within 3 days!!!!") ... so they have now sent me an email saying sorry about the delay and that they've sent the first 3 vinyls separately. That should arrive here within 12 days. The other 2 - God knows!!! However, the good thing about HMV was that it was quite cheap (especially for more 'chart' orientated vinyl) and they have much cheaper shipping, as well as a very large range. For instance, I picked up Push - Stange world for 3.33 pounds +1.25 shipping ($10+5=$15). Oh, another good thing about HMV is if you have a friend who has an international student card number, you can get 10% extra off (25% off when you remove the VAT).

I'm also going to order some stuff from chemical records and see what they're like - thinking of getting Rank 1 - Such is life (Marco V mix). If you want to make a joint order form anywhere, that's no problem.

Anyway, hope that helps you out mr_stamper.

P.S. If you could suggest some more 'harder' style trance songs to add to my collection, that would be great.

Picked up a couple of vinyls from Dance Arena today:
Sinead O'Connor - Troy (the phoenix from the flame) (Push remix) - takes forever to get going, but when it does, it's an absolute blinder
Hemstock & Jennings - Crimson soil - fantastic progressive vocal track

Barraka - Song to the Siren (Jean Phillipe's Dirty South Mix)

OWNAGE!!!

Dowlz do you have your TT's hooked up to your PC??? I wouldnt mind hearing a set from you, you have fantastic tunes.

Posted by DJ Dowlz on Aug-20-2002 02:38:

Firstly, Webmeister, I couldn't agree with you any more :-) Awesome tune.

To mr_stamper:
Unfortunately, the only turntable I have at the moment is a standard record player (non-DJ). I do, however, have two CDJ100s and I've recorded a trance set onto my PC using them. I also recorded a live set I did at The Exchange onto MD and converted it to mp3 - sounds perfect (but the track selection is incredibly commercial). You can get them both by going onto the source of music that I think I'm not supposed to mention here ... you know the one ... and browsing my files.

Ahh, wtf, I've got this arvo off so I'll make a new mix for yah :-)

Also, I got a shipment in from HMV today:
William Orbit - Barber's adagio for string [cover was slightly worn]
Ralphie B - Massive [cover was fairly faded]
Ian van Dahl - Castles in the sky (gotta love the breakdown in the Wippenberg mix - it's a nice touch to what is an incredibly commercial track) [this one came shrinkwrapped]

Overall, HMV were pretty good. Amazing range, and they'll ship whatever comes in from your order every 10 days. Shipping was 5quid initial plus 50p per vinyl after which absolutely blitzes the prices elsewhere. Shipping took 8 days which is definitely the fastest.

Well, I'm off to make you a mix.

Slight problem people - I'm running in passive mode (behind a Uni College firewall) so you'll have problems problems getting stuff off me if you're also in passive mode. So to solve this problem, could someone suggest anywhere fast where I can place a 116mb file? Perhaps a public FTP? PM if you know of anywhere. Thanx.

Anybody here with a fast connection running in active mode?

I really wanna hear this set...

Problem solvered - I've uploaded it to an http server. PM for the details. I assume it supports file resuming BTW (ie gozilla, getright etc) so all you poor 56k users can still get it :-)

I started a new thread for comments etc here
